The effects of board interlocks with an allegedly fraudulent company on audit fees
Drawing on prior literature on audit fees, client reputation, and corporate governance, we posit that a material adverse event at a firm, such as a financial fraud allegation, leads to an increase in the audit fees of firms connected to the former by a board interlock. We propose two possible mechanisms to explain the upward pressure on audit fees: a client-side effect, where the client demands additional audit services, and an auditor-side effect, where the auditor raises its audit fees due to a perceived increase in audit engagement risk. The results indicate an average marginal increase of 12.86% in audit fees in the year following the public revelation of financial fraud. Additional analyses suggest that an auditor-side effect is in place, while we cannot find clear evidence supporting the client-side effect. Furthermore, we document that the positive effect on audit fees persists for up to at least 2 years after public disclosure of the event when the interlocked director serves as a member of the audit committee

Corporate risk management and COVID-19: When the unexpected happened, some companies were better prepared than others
In this article, Mariya Ivanova reviews the accounting literature on risk management and pandemics. She finds that companies that have an explicit corporate risk management policy and experience of previous pandemics (e.g. SARS or swine flue) are more positive and perform better compared to peers. As such, companies should not only deal with COVID-19 short-term but should also carefully implement more long-term risk management practices (e.g. routines, Chief Risk Manager, specific risk committee on the board etc) to improve shareholder value.
Corporate Bankruptcy and Directors’ Reputation: An Empirical Analysis of the Effects on Public Debt Contracts
This paper investigates the link between board members’ past professional experiences and the terms and conditions of the debt contracts of their current firms. In particular, we examine whether directors' past bankruptcy experience affects the pricing and non-pricing terms of public debt contracts. Using a sample of 8,142 bond issues in the U.S. in the period 1995-2015, we document higher credit spreads and smaller bond sizes for firms with such directors, suggesting that bondholders are concerned about past bankruptcy experience. Our results remain robust to different model specifications. This effect is moderated for bankruptcies that are likely driven by macroeconomic shocks such as the dotcom bubble and the global financial crisis. We also show that our findings are not explained by bond issuers with an elevated risk of default and seem instead to be driven by directors serving on key monitoring committees, indicating that prior bankruptcy experience raises concerns about the company’s corporate governance. Finally, mediation analysis offers some evidence of a limited negative indirect effect of prior bankruptcy experience on the terms of debt contracts through the firm’s financial and investment policies. Overall, our findings suggest that lenders incorporate information about past professional experiences of directors into public debt contracting

Understanding the rich world of outfits: a study of fashion compatibility, latent style, and outfit behavior
Many computer vision applications in the fashion domain require solving tasks where complex relationships between images, such as the notion of item compatibility, are being learned. We take a metric learning approach to representing compatibility between pairs of items. First, we introduce a model that learns compatibility relationships in dedicated embedding subspaces dependent on item type, which results in significant gains on established fashion compatibility prediction tasks. Second, we present a method for learning a richer notion of compatibility across multiple compatibility conditions whose contributions are learned as a latent variable, which provides better performance on established tasks while requiring fewer embedding subspaces to be learned. Third, we make the first published attempt at diagnosing the salient features of a pair of items that make them compatible, and linking them to human-interpretable concepts. Finally, we demonstrate that our representation of outfits enables diverse, novel, and practically-useful visual search queries for the fashion domain, and results in semantically-meaningful style summaries with several directions for future work.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'Closed Access', the embargo will last until 2022-08-01The student, Mariya Vasileva, accepted the attached license on 2020-07-17 at 16:21.The student, Mariya Vasileva, submitted this Dissertation for approval on 2020-07-17 at 16:57.This Dissertation was approved for publication on 2020-07-22 at 16:02.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #15686 on 2020-10-02 at 15:51:30Made available in DSpace on 2020-10-07T22:50:04Z (GMT). Mariya Halych and the members of “Lanka” (“The Link”)
The article is dedicated Mariya Halych who was the only female member of “Lanka” literary association (after 1926 renamed “Mars”). The author gives an account on the artist’s biography and reviews her literary texts written between the 20s and the 60s. Mariya Halych’s autobiographies, her reminiscences of B. Antonenko-Davydovych, H. Kosynka, Ye. Pluzhnyk as well as letters to a well-known literary critic V. Pivtoradnia complete the vivid picture of literary and artistic environment in the 1920s and in the fi rst half of the 1930s. Such a picture contains a whole bunch of previously unknown details concerning the everyday life of “Lanka” and its members
ПСИХОЛОГИЯ ВЛАСТИ В ПОЛИТОЛОГИЧЕСКОМ АНАЛИЗЕ
The article analyzes the existing approaches to the study of the concept of "power" in political psychology. In particular, the author focuses on theoretical foundations of psychoanalysis, behaviorism, existential-humanistic school and many others. The article analyses historical and psychological foundations of power in a society. Also, the article shows connection of political values and motives with the phenomenon of subordination. The author investigates various approaches in analysis of political perception. The author emphasizes heuristic potential and usefulness of the theory of archetypes and the study of the deep concepts of culture. It is noted that political psychologists and political scientists are increasingly paying attention to the relationship of emotions, unconscious attitudes and preferences in the choice of a particular model of political power. The author comes to the conclusion that contemporary psychological approach to power lacks the analysis of the original archetypes of culture and concepts underlying the mentality. According to the author, Value and motivational approaches do not perform challenges, facing research in political psychology. Due to the fact that values are not sustainable in the process of historical development of society they can serve as an indicator of only temporary socio-psychological phenomena. It is noted that there are archaic forms of power, that can be seen in the analysis of the concept of "order". Despite the fact that in modern society power takes more cultural and civilizational forms, the origins of power are rooted in deep human attitudes, that influence on the formation of the main institutions of power.

It was shown thateven for this high-temperature range the utilization of a CO-shift catalyst leads to aconsiderable increase of the CO-conversion, at least up to 900 °C compared to anoperation mode without catalyst[1]. However, the harsh conditions of an IGCC-powerplant lead to very challenging operation conditions for the dense H2-selectivemembranes as well as for the CO-shift-catalysts.The present work aimed at the development of thermo-chemically and microstructurallystable, active and compatible membrane-catalyst systems for futurecatalytic CO-shift membrane-reactors. Therefore, the ceramic mixed protonic electronicconductors BaCe0.2Zr0.7Yb0.08Ni0.02O3−d and La5.5WO12−d were combined with ironbased catalysts like Fe/Cr/Cu-spinels. These materials were already studied intensivelyregarding the planned applications and show very good properties [2]. Additionally, formembrane-catalyst systems it is strongly required that the combined components donot influence each other negatively i.e. by diffusion or reaction.Figure: SEM picture of a cross section through a membrane-catalyst system of a 86Fe14Cr-catalyst on atape cast supported La5.5WO12−d-membrane after operation in a membrane reactor at 850 °C.The investigation identified material combinations that seem to be highly applicablefor future catalytic CO-shift membrane reactors in the high-temperature range up to900 °C. As shown in the figure above, the 86Fe14Cr-spinel catalyst and the La5.5WO12−d-membrane show very good compatibility. Additional investigations on membranereactorperformance, long term stability and scale up are necessary.[1] D. van Holt, Keramische Membranen für die H2-Abtrennung in CO-Shift-Reaktoren, DissertationRuhr-Universität Bochum 2014.[2] D. van Holt, E. Eigenfrequencies of the randomly pinned drum and conductivity of graphene
Graphene is a convenient material for nanomechanical applications since high-frequency oscillations are easily accessible. In this article, we consider graphene on a rough substrate attached to imperfections at random locations. We explore the statistics of low-lying phonon modes, which exert most influence on the conductivity of graphene. Our numerics suggest the hypothesis that the nearest-neighbor spacings of low-lying eigenfrequencies have the Wigner-Dyson probability distribution after averaging over the random configurations of disorder. Due to interaction of electrons with the oscillations of the membrane, an electron can be transferred to higher or lower energies, which is a manifestation of the phonon-assisted Tien-Gordon effect. The Tien-Gordon effect suppresses the conductivity of graphene. In the regime of low Fermi energies and small sizes of the sample an increase of conductivity is observed which we refer to as Klein tunneling and electron-hole pair creation. Eventually, when the increase of the transmission becomes too prominent, the pair creation changes the ground state of the system, signalizing the limit of applicability of the single-particle Dirac equation used in this article.QN/Quantum NanoscienceApplied Science
