A more careful look at the syntax–discourse interface

    No full text
In this article, we compare results from two recent comprehensive studies on syntax–discourse interface properties. Both Valenzuela (2005, 2006) and Ivanov (2009) investigate the L2 acquisition of clitic left dislocation (CLLD) as a marker of topicality in L2 Spanish and L2 Bulgarian. However, Valenzuela argues that near-native speakers of Spanish demonstrate residual optionality at the syntax–discourse interface while Ivanov claims that advanced learners of Bulgarian are ultimately successful at the interface. Assuming a syntactic analysis of the clitic-doubling phenomenon based on López (2009), Bulgarian and Spanish CLLD look very much alike. Displaced objects that have antecedents in the previous discourse, that is, topics, have to be doubled by a clitic to avoid (potential) confusion and infelicity. Valenzuela's near-native Spanish speakers are 100% accurate in accepting specific dislocated objects doubled by a clitic. We argue that their inferior accuracy on generic dislocates may be due to some participants’ heeding discourse cues over semantic cues in processing these sentences. Ivanov's advanced participants as a group display native-like choices. We suggest that when subjected to a more careful scrutiny, the external (syntax–discourse) interface does not look very different from the internal interfaces, after all

Second-order optimality conditions for problems with C1C^1 data

    No full text
AbstractIn this paper we obtain second-order optimality conditions of Karush–Kuhn–Tucker type and Fritz John one for a problem with inequality constraints and a set constraint in nonsmooth settings using second-order directional derivatives. In the necessary conditions we suppose that the objective function and the active constraints are continuously differentiable, but their gradients are not necessarily locally Lipschitz. In the sufficient conditions for a global minimum x¯ we assume that the objective function is differentiable at x¯ and second-order pseudoconvex at x¯, a notion introduced by the authors [I. Ginchev, V.I. Ivanov, Higher-order pseudoconvex functions, in: I.V. Konnov, D.T. Luc, A.M. Rubinov (Eds.), Generalized Convexity and Related Topics, in: Lecture Notes in Econom. and Math. Systems, vol. 583, Springer, 2007, pp. 247–264], the constraints are both differentiable and quasiconvex at x¯. In the sufficient conditions for an isolated local minimum of order two we suppose that the problem belongs to the class C1,1. We show that they do not hold for C1 problems, which are not C1,1 ones. At last a new notion parabolic local minimum is defined and it is applied to extend the sufficient conditions for an isolated local minimum from problems with C1,1 data to problems with C1 one

80th anniversary of the birth of Ivan Ivanov (1944-2001), an archeologist and public activist

    No full text
Тhis year marked 80 years since the birth of Ivan Ivanov – the archaeologist who studied the Varna Chalcolithic necropolis and showed it to the world. On the occasion of this anniversary, a collection titled "To Leave Behind" was published. It contains journalistic texts written by Ivan Ivanov in the period 1992–2001 and published in various Varna newspapers. The texts reflect the personal experiences and observations of their author of everything that happened during the specified period in the public life of the city of Varna. This gives the collection the character of a chronicle of the transition in Bulgaria and Varna from one political and economic system to another, from the 20th to the 21st century, and from the second to the third millenniu

This article breaks down the less-known four-part drama by author Mara Švel-Gamiršek titled Đuka Ivanov, written at the very end of the thirties of the 20th century, and presents arguments that firmly define it as a socially engaged drama with strong naturalistic leanings. Despite hints that the play was meant to be staged at the HNK in Zagreb during the time of Julije Benešić and Aleksandar Freudenreich, Đuka Ivanov was only staged for the first time in 2015 in Osijek. With her play, Mara Švel-Gamiršek calls for a renewal of traditional values, a return to roots, preserving heritage, and points out the benefits that the earth affords us for our genuine, backbreaking work. With this comes the idea of a dramatic text with the basic tenets of Heimankunst, a literary phenomenon that could be found at the peak of German literature at the end of the first and beginning of the second decade of the 20th century, as one of the products of anti-modernist movements
