Multifunctional antibacterial and ultraviolet protective cotton cellulose developed by in situ biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles into a polysiloxane matrix mediated by sumac leaf extract
A novel facile and eco-friendly procedure for fabrication of multifunctional antibacterial and ultraviolet (UV) protective cotton surface was presented, including premodification of cellulose fibres with a polysiloxane matrix, followed by green in situ biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) in the presence of sumac leaf extract as a reducing and stabilising agent. During the biosynthesis, face-centred cubic Ag NPs with an average size of 52–105 nm were generated on the cotton fibres. Increasing the concentration of the AgNO precursor resulted in increased concentration of Ag NPs of 50–11,000 mg/kg. The chemically modified cotton surface exhibited excellent antimicrobial and UV protection properties. The additive antibacterial activity of Ag NPs and sumac leaf extract showed biocidal activity against S. aureus even at the lowest Ag NP concentration of 50 mg/kg, and in the case of E. coli, biocidal activity was achieved at a concentration of 340 mg/kg. The presence of both Ag NPs and sumac leaf extract provided UV protection factor greater than 40, irrespective of Ag NP concentration. The increase in Ag NP concentration significantly improved the durability of the coating
High mutation rates limit evolutionary adaptation in Escherichia coli
Mutation is fundamental to evolution, because it generates the genetic variation on which selection can act. In nature, genetic changes often increase the mutation rate in systems that range from viruses and bacteria to human tumors. Such an increase promotes the accumulation of frequent deleterious or neutral alleles, but it can also increase the chances that a population acquires rare beneficial alleles. Here, we study how up to 100-fold increases in Escherichia coli’s genomic mutation rate affect adaptive evolution. To do so, we evolved multiple replicate populations of asexual E. coli strains engineered to have four different mutation rates for 3000 generations in the laboratory. We measured the ability of evolved populations to grow in their original environment and in more than 90 novel chemical environments. In addition, we subjected the populations to whole genome population sequencing. Although populations with higher mutation rates accumulated greater genetic diversity, this diversity conveyed benefits only for modestly increased mutation rates, where populations adapted faster and also thrived better than their ancestors in some novel environments. In contrast, some populations at the highest mutation rates showed reduced adaptation during evolution, and failed to thrive in all of the 90 alternative environments. In addition, they experienced a dramatic decrease in mutation rate. Our work demonstrates that the mutation rate changes the global balance between deleterious and beneficial mutational effects on fitness. In contrast to most theoretical models, our experiments suggest that this tipping point already occurs at the modest mutation rates that are found in the wild
Ivan Hribar: Political prisoner and detainee of the Great War
Tematski okvir pričujoče diplomske naloge so prisilne migracije s poudarkom na izkušnjah političnih zapornikov, konkretno v avstrijski polovici avstro-ogrske monarhije v času prve svetovne vojne. The topic of the present undergraduate thesis is forced migration with an emphasis on the experience of political prisoners, concretely in the Austrian half of Austria-Hungary during the First World War. The purpose of the undergraduate thesis is to describe the concept of forced migration in a more general way, to give the historical context of Slovenian political prisoners, especially Pan-Slavic intellectuals, during the First World War in Austria-Hungary, and to analyze the reasons for their internment and treatment. The second part also describes the personal experience of the former mayor of Ljubljana Ivan Hribar, who spent several years of the war forcibly emigrated to the Austrian village of Abtenau. His story gives us a personal insight into the experience of a political prisoner

Flame retardant effectiveness of nanodispersed organophosphorus-derivative in polyamide 6 textile filament yarns
The halogen-free flame retardant (FR) polyamide 6 (PA6) composite textile filament yarns fabricated via melt-compounding have never achieved effective flame retardancy. The main reason for that is related to the agglomeration of FR additives due to their poor compatibility with PA6 polymer chains. The formed FR agglomerates substantially reduce the flame retardant effectiveness, disable continuous melt-spinning process due to clogging of the filters and spinnerets, and significantly impair fibre tensile properties. Therefore, the goal of this study was to investigate how lowering of the FR additive size to the nanoscopic level affects melt-spinning process and flame retardancy of the nanocomposite PA6 filament yarns.
To this aim, we established a new scalable approach for the production of new-generation PA6/FR nanocomposite filament yarns with uniformly distributed nano-dispersed halogen-free FR. So, instead of mixing FR additive with PA6 melt, we rather chose a step back, i.e. mixing of FR additive with ε-caprolactam melt and performing the in situ polymerization
The novel anti-phage system Shield co-opts an RmuC domain to mediate phage defense across Pseudomonas species.
Competitive bacteria-bacteriophage interactions have resulted in the evolution of a plethora of bacterial defense systems preventing phage propagation. In recent years, computational and bioinformatic approaches have underpinned the discovery of numerous novel bacterial defense systems. Anti-phage systems are frequently encoded together in genomic loci termed defense islands. Here we report the identification and characterisation of a novel anti-phage system, that we have termed Shield, which forms part of the Pseudomonas defensive arsenal. The Shield system comprises the core component ShdA, a membrane-bound protein harboring an RmuC domain. Heterologous production of ShdA alone is sufficient to mediate bacterial immunity against several phages. We demonstrate that Shield and ShdA confer population-level immunity and that they can also decrease transformation efficiency. We further show that ShdA homologues can degrade DNA in vitro and, when expressed in a heterologous host, can alter the organisation of the host chromosomal DNA. Use of comparative genomic approaches identified how Shield can be divided into four subtypes, three of which contain additional components that in some cases can negatively affect the activity of ShdA and/or provide additional lines of phage defense. Collectively, our results identify a new player within the Pseudomonas bacterial immunity arsenal that displays a novel mechanism of protection, and reveals a role for RmuC domains in phage defense
