Integration of I4.0 technologies with maintenance processes: what are the effects on sustainable manufacturing?
Manufacturing organisations have a huge impact on the three pillars of sustainability (i.e. economic, environmental and social), becoming crucial stakeholders for sustainable value creation. In the meantime, the 4th industrial revolution, characterized by several technologies that allow digitalisation, optimisation, automation, customisation and more communication, is in progress. Thus, the 'Industry 4.0' can be an enabler for industrial sustainable development. Maintenance processes, which are fundamental for ensuring sustainable operation of manufacturing systems, can benefit from these technologies, with a consequent improvement of maintenance and manufacturing performance. Therefore, a strong synergy between 14.0 technologies and industrial maintenance processes for promoting sustainable manufacturing occurs. Nevertheless, to date, no study investigates thoroughly the effects of such potential synergy on sustainable manufacturing. The aim of this study is two-fold. First, identifying the relation between maintenance processes and 14.0 technologies; then, analysing the positive effects of their integration on the economic, environmental and social dimensions of sustainable manufacturing. Maintenance for Sustainability in the Industry 4.0 context: a Scoping Literature Review
Industrial and manufacturing systems have a huge impact on energy and resources consumption, on the emissions to the environment and, hence, on the society. For these reasons, Sustainable Manufacturing is one of the most important issue to address for reaching a Sustainable Development of our society. In this frame, maintenance process that must ensure availability, reliability and safety of equipment, has a key role for sustainable operations. However, how maintenance can integrate the sustainability goal and contribute to this objective is not clearly defined: few studies addressing this topic are available in the current literature. These reasons have led the authors to conduct a Scoping Literature Review to investigate the role of maintenance for sustainable manufacturing, with particular focus on the 4th industrial revolution and the enabling technologies 4.0, with the aim of identifying future research directions in this field. The review was conducted following a protocol that minimizes subjectivity and allowing the critical evaluation of relevant studies. Two databases (Scopus and Web of Science) and a set of specific keywords were used to identify and select peer-reviewed papers that presented evidence on the relationship between maintenance and sustainability in the industrial field. The selected papers were assembled respect to specific thematic sections that allowed us to create research clusters in the field of interest. The analysis sheds light on the increasing interest in the last years on “maintenance & sustainability” and the big potentiality of enabling technologies 4.0 in this frame. This paper motivates future researches aimed at the development of sustainable maintenance methodologies/policies, with particular focus on industry 4.0 context, and points out research challenges and opportunities for researchers/practitioners working on maintenance field
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. A Conceptual Framework for Measuring Maintenance Impacts on Sustainability
2017 - 2018The paradigm of sustainable manufacturing has attracted a great deal of attention over the last decade as an
emerging manufacturing approach intending to empower the enterprises to cope with several challenges (such
as depletion of physical resources, stricter laws and regulations, economic stagnation, and customer request
for higher product quality) and guide them to stand out in today’s competitive environment. Sustainable
manufacturing is defined as creation of manufactured goods through the use of a series of processes that
minimise the negative environmental impacts, conserve energy and natural resources, are safe for employees,
communities and consumers, and are economically sound.
In such today’s competitive industrial context, maintenance process is major lever of organisation
efficiency. Indeed, maintenance provides company the ability to keep its production system in efficient state
and able to provide product at the required quality. In that way, maintenance process has a large potential in
pursuit of sustainable manufacturing thanks to its impact on other company’s processes. In fact, maintenance
affects production volume and costs, asset performance, equipment availability, quality of the final product,
but also health and safety of people, the surrounding natural environment and the social welfare. Maintenance
has many direct and indirect impacts on sustainability-related aspects and a proper and sustainable
management of maintenance processes lead to reduce and control such impacts. A sustainable maintenance
management strives for more efficient resource and energy management, for reduction of wastes associated to
maintenance, elimination of negative environmental impact, and guarantee of employees and stakeholders’
safety.
Despite of the increasing attention on the aforementioned area of investigation in very recent years, an
exhaustive and detailed literature review related to ‘maintenance and sustainability in industrial context’ was
not found. For this reason, the current state of the art was investigated in order to provide an overview of the
literature in ‘maintenance and sustainability’. The review was conducted through a scoping literature review
methodology that, differently from conventional reviews based on the author knowledge perspective, follows
a protocol minimizing the subjectivity. The main information was extracted and gaps were identified.
First, the literature review underlined the research challenge of better investigating and defining
maintenance impacts on economic, environmental, and social sustainability. Therefore, the relationships
between maintenance processes and sustainability indicators should be defined and formalised. A sustainable
maintenance management should reduce maintenance impacts and their consequences, and new
frameworks/methodologies/models should be defined in order to guide the stakeholders to reduce economic,
environmental and social impacts associated with industrial maintenance activities.
A conceptual framework for measuring maintenance impacts on sustainability was then developed and
provided in the thesis as scientific contribution to the research challenge identified and reported above.
Therefore, maintenance impacts on sustainability and the relationships between sustainability indicators and
maintenance processes were identified. The developed framework can guide and help several stakeholders to
define maintenance direct and indirect impacts on sustainability aspects, to select the indicators of interest for
measuring such impacts, and to be more aware about maintenance and sustainability relationship.

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
