Quality of E-Courses in the Master of Education Program in the Palestinian Universities from the Students’ Point of View
This study aimed to evaluate the quality of e-courses in the Master of Education program in Palestinian universities from the students’ point of view.
The study used the mixed methodology (quantitative and qualitative). (80) students responded to the questionnaire of (41) items and were distributed in three domains, and (11) students responded to the interview of (5) open questions about the strength and weakness points of e-courses and suggestions for development. The study findings are: The total degree of the three domains of the e-courses quality was high (76.33); the degree of the quality standards of e-courses of each domain is high, since it was between (70.3-82.2). The study showed that the main advantages of the e-courses are that they save time and effort and provide the opportunity to watch the recorded lectures at anytime and anywhere, alongside a diversity in learning sources as well as in learning and evaluating activities. Whereas the main disadvantages of e-courses were found out by the study to be that they reduce the visual communication with the lecturers, in addition to the lack of skills of some lecturers in using e-learning strategies. Most prominent suggestions are to diversify the use of e-learning strategies, and considering the necessity of providing slides on the Moodle before the lecture.
The study recommended adoption of the list of quality standards for e-courses developed in this study by the Academic Quality Department in universities, developing a training program on the e-Learning approach (concerning teaching designs, teaching strategies, and assessment methods), and training all academics on it
Exploring the Factors Influencing the College Students’ Engagement in Mobile Learning in Palestine
This study aims to explore the factors influencing students’ engagement in mobile learning at Palestine Technical University Kadoorie. It utilizes a mixed research approach that combines both quantitative and qualitative designs. The study sample consists of 37 college students from two different faculties: Arts and Educational Sciences, and Applied Sciences. Data were collected using a pre-existing scale for engagement and its factors. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 students who completed the scales. The findings showed a statistically significant difference in the total engagement scores, specifically in the emotional engagement dimension. However, there was no statistical significance found in the social, cognitive, or behavioral domains. Factors related to instructors are influential factors in student engagement and have been found to be statistically significant. Qualitative findings supported the quantitative results for this question, which showed subthemes of instructor-related factors such as instructor presence, motivation, teaching strategies, and technical environment. Researchers recommend that policymakers and educators prioritize the engagement factors of students in mobile learning. One of the limitations is the generalizability of this study. The participants who were surveyed were exclusively sourced from two departments within one university. To broaden the scope, we suggest that future research include individuals from various disciplines, universities, academic institutions, and students
Proposed Visualization for Integrating STEAM-Related Learning Outcomes into Teacher Qualification Programs at Palestinian Universities: A Qualitative Study
Objectives: This study aimed to explore the extent to which the outcomes of the STEAM approach are presented in the Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs) of teacher qualification programs in Palestinian universities, and to develop ILOs for teacher qualification programs based on the STEAM approach.
Methods: The study used a qualitative methodology in thematic analysis to examine the presence of STEAM approach outcomes in ILOs of teacher qualification programs through inductive and deductive Code Book-aided analysis. Additionally, a system-analysis technique was used to develop STEAM-informed ILOs for teacher qualification programs in Palestinian universities. The validity of this visualization was established by educational experts through a specialized scale including comprehensive relevant criteria.
Results: The study found that the frequency with which STEAM approaches are used in teacher qualification programs at Palestinian universities is limited, as are their effects. The STEAM-related outcomes more frequently encountered are critical thinking, reflective thinking, collaborative learning, and problem solving. The proposal includes a matrix of inputs, processes and outputs that encompasses STEAM-informed ILOs in four different levels: knowledge (8 ILOs), mental skills (12), performative skills (12), and transferable skills (10).
Conclusions: The proposal includes mechanisms to the application of its visualization at various levels, including by the Accreditation and Quality Assurance Commission (AQAC) and the Ministry of Higher Education in their evaluation of academic programs. It can also be useful at the university level as a tool in the writing of STEAM-informed ILOs to form teachers who can implement the STEAM approach for achieving the idea of productive school
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist
We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
