Contemporary cities nowadays are a mix of technological development, art, and architecture at the crossroads. In this edited book, a group of contributions address different topics related to cities identities, cities shapes and information, heritage, arts, sustainability, vocabulary, and public regulations. While a city is an orchestration of architecture, art, and urban planning; its identity is, however, linked to human elements, geography, cultural, social, and economic integrations. Arts and architecture are among the factors that shape the history of civilizations and allow ancient and modern cities to flourish. These factors do not stop only at buildings and constructions but also include traditions, cultural beliefs, and communal arts. By cherishing traditions and civilizations that left behind various architectural miracles, the way for future generations to develop and preserve their identity could be paved. This edited book is the result of the work of authors and editors collaborating on developing a general understanding of the themes related to the city and its identity through art and architecture. Several sections are focusing on the shaping of the city based on its morphological formation and the cultural identities restructured in European, Middle Eastern, and international contexts. This volume brings together thirty contributions from the latest edition that was held at the University of Pisa on December 5 and 6, 2022. The conference treated the themes of cities shapes and development of vocabularies as well as topics related to visual arts and visualization and its impact on human design of cities. The book is divided into four main parts: Part One—Identifying Cities and Formation; Part Two—Shaping Cities and Formation; Part Three—Heritage Arts: Sustainability, Identities and Public Regulations; and Part Four— Development of Cities’ Vocabularies. This book explores critical viewpoints on current urban developments and challenges while examining the historical assemblages of cities, their postcolonial identities, and architectural forms. Based on studies from all over the world, Italy, Turkey, Korea, and other countries are mentioned in this book as case studies, whereas evidence from the interplay of art, architecture, and urban planning is illustrated. The book also brings together experiences from urban design with uncertainty and formulation of environmental and social sustainability in different contexts. Meanwhile, it sheds light on the gentrification and preservation of neighborhoods in old cities and towns. Nonetheless, some contributions pose the question of arts as a way to revitalize historical contexts in some areas

According to “safer cities” guideline, “safety and security are considered as an emerging phenomenon in city development strategies” (UNDOC, 2016). Risks and challenges threaten cities, jeopardize city-dwellers as well as structural foundations of communities while enhancing vulnerability and fragility of them. Many cities across the globe are being undermined by a multitude of risks that impress their safety and security aspects from national to local level. The role of natural green areas on restraining parts of environmental or human-made challenges has been highlighted. However, the question that is brought up at this research is that “does the natural and built up environment have the effectual role on safety perception?” or “which characteristics of natural environment could stimulate the reasons of creation of violence and criminology on urban spaces?” The objective of the research is to determine the role of urban green areas including parks and open spaces and characteristics of vegetation design on the level of safety perception by park users. Conducted methodology of this research is mixed methods approaches (multi-methods) including qualitative and quantitative methods. Analytic data is assembled through questionnaire, field observation as well as spatial data analysis utilizing Geographic Information System (GIS). This study commences with researching into the existing link between characteristics of the natural environment, vegetation greenery and direct results of their implementation on level of safety perception, which follows with general description of both phenomena, reviewing several theories as well as analyzing of different case studies as a reaching point of guidelines for safety of urban parks with deeper concentration on indicators of safety perception on Bibiloteca degli di Alberi di Milano (BAM), ended with results on analysis of safety indicators in response of positive and negative impacts of implementing Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) on safety of the environment

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

The case study presented in this paper is a manifestation for an urban regeneration project that transformed a highway to a greenway; the first part draws on the understanding of the contextual background of the highway regeneration project, it analyses the key factors of the debated land use and how the public authorities mandated the development open public places as a policy. The second part entails the rebirth of the public place as part of the Greenway where the role goes beyond the semantics from a park towards being considered the front porch of the city oldest Neighbourhood, the Northend. The last part analyses in depth the cultural programming of the Park and its character as a liveable destination in the heart of the Downtown district; using a public Life Matrix of evaluation to identify users’ behavioural patterns through intercept surveys, frequency social activities through intensive three months long physical observation analysis, and lastly in-depth interviews with local Stakeholders, related Governmental bodies and Boston development and planning authorities. The outcomes highlighted a tendency that community involvement in the planning and place making process helped inform the public policy about the needs of surrounding neighbourhood, as well as emphasize the Public Private Partnership in successful urban regeneration projects

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
