    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    One of the traditional ceremonies and rituals in Minangkabau is batagak pangulu. The objective of this study is to figure out and to analyze the performance of batagak pangulu in Minangkabau, to analyze text, co-text, and context, to find out the meaning and function of the local wisdom, and to create a model of revitalization. Emic method was used in this research. Participant observations and interviews were applied as the technique of data collection as well as qualitative data analysis. The research findings were; the performance of batagak pangulu was classified into traditional events, ceremonial, and entertainment.The results from textual analysis proved that there were differences in the treatment of customary rules and in the traditional leader who has not been inaugurated as a penghulu. The meaning of batagak pangulu for Minangkabau people were to strengthen or to legitimize the presence of penghulu in Minangkabau, and to declarethe soko (title) bequeathed to the nephew, mean while its function was (1) as a validation institution and traditional institutions of Minangkabau, (2) as coercive and supervisory norms that must be adhered to the members (3) as a projection system, a reflection of wishful thinking of Minangkabausociety, (4) as a means of child education, and (5) as a pride in the community.The values and norms of batagak pangulu were a logical value, the ethics value, and the aesthetic value; and the norms were the norms of religion, norms of decency, the norms of obscenity, the norms of habits, and the norms of customary legal.The local wisdom of batagak pangulu were: mutual cooperation, deliberation and consensus, peace and conflict resolution, politeness, truth and justice, commitments, harmony, gender management, and social solidarity. The revitalization of batagak pangulu was the management of either in Nagari Piobang or in other nagari. A good management for the sustainability of batagak pangulu in Nagari Piobang in Minangkabau was conducted by the deliberation and mutual cooperation. For other nagari,it was conducted through tourism-culture, the show of batagak pangulu on television, seminar, counselling, and news letters.Salah satu bentuk tradisi upacara adat dan ritual Minangkabau adalah upacara batagak pangulu. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah memaparkan dan menganalis performansi batagak pangulu di Minangkabau, menganalisis teks, ko-teks, dan konteks, menemukan makna dan fungsi serta kearifan lokal, dan membuat model revitalisasi. Metode penelitian ini adalah metode emik dengan teknik pengumpulan data observasi-partisipasi dan wawancara serta analisis data secara kualitatif. Temuan penelitian adalah performansi batagak pangulu dikelompokkan atas acara adat, seremonial, dan hiburan. Hasil analisis teks terdapat perbedaan perlakuan aturan adat dan pemimpin adat terhadap penghulu yang belum dikukuhkan. Makna batagak pangulu bagi masyarakat Minangkabau adalah mengukuhkan atau melegitimasi keberadaan penghulu di Minangkabau serta mengukuhkan sako (gelar) diwariskan kepada kemenakan, sedangkan fungsinya adalah (1) sebagai alat pengesahan pranata dan lembaga adat Minangkabau, (2) sebagai pemaksa dan pengawas agar norma-norma masyarakat selalu dipatuhi anggota kaum, (3) sebagai sistem proyeksi dan pencerminan angan-angan suatu kelompok masyarakat Minangkabau,(4) sebagai alat pendidikan anak, dan (5) sebagai suatu kebanggaan di masyarakat. Nilai dan norma yang terdapat dalam tradisi batagak pangulu adalah nilai logika, etika, dan estetika sedangkan norma yang terdapat adalah norma agama, kesopanan, kesusilaan, kebiasaan, dan hukum adat. Kearifan lokal yang ditemukan dalam tradisi batagak pangulu gotong royong, musyawarah dan mufakat, kerukunan dan penyelesaian konflik, kebenaran dan keadilan, kesopansantunan, komitmen, keharmonisan, pengelolaan gender, dan kesetiakawanan sosial. Revitalisasi tradisi batagak pangulu berupa pengelolaan baik di Nagari Piobang maupun di nagari-nagari lain di Minangkabau.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

    Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh penggunaan model project based learning terhadap kemampuan menulis teks biografi oleh siswa kelas X SMAN 1 Hamparan Perak. Penelitian ini merupakan jenis penelitian kuantitatif dengan metode eksperimen. Instrumen penelitian yang digunakan adalah berupa tes. Sedangkan teknik analisis data menggunakan uji-t Independent Sample T-Test. Berdasarkan hasil analisis uji statistik penelitian ini telah menjawab hipotesis yakni: memperoleh nilai rata-rata perbedaan antara posttest kelas kontrol dengan rata-rata 77,71 (sebelum diberikan treatment) dengan nilai postest kelas eksperimen dengan rata-rata 86,11 (sesudah diberikan treatment) yaitu Asym.Sig. (2-tailed) bernilai 0,000, karena nilai 0,000 lebih kecil dari < 0,05, maka dapat disimpulkan bahwa “Hipotesis diterima” artinya ada perbedaan dari sebelum dan sesudah penggunaan model pembelajaran project based learning dalam kegiatan menulis teks biografi oleh siswa SMAN 1 Hamparan Perak
