Emotional engagement in feature film storytelling : reframing the classical three-act structure / Norlela Ismail
This article examines the contributions of the classical three-act structure in storytelling that could evoke emotions. The importance of its relationship with character's goal, motivation and audience's emotion is also discussed. A case study is ^employed as a research method in which Field and McKee's conception of the three-act
paradigm is used to analyse the case. The purpose of this article is to provide a platform (not offering a formula) for a filmmaker or screenwriter to emulate an approach that could help obtain an emotionally engaging story
Narrative form of European art cinema : the case of The Double Life of Veronique (1991) and Antonia's Line (1995) / Norlela Ismail
If a comparison is to be made between the anti-classical and the classical narrative, which one is the fairest' of all? Each form has its own distinct features and their sheer existence is due to the upheaval point of views about film as cultural identity among film scholars in the early twentieth century. Most European films are believed to have employed the anti-classical narrative whilst mainstream films or referred to as Hollywood films favour the classical narrative. The purpose of this article is to identify the types of film narrative form of European art films. Two films are used as case studies: The Double Life of Veronique (1991) and antonia's Line (1995). The key concepts examined are story/plot and character's motivations. Film style is briefly discussed to reinforce further understanding of the key concepts. This study
shows that The Double life of Veronique (TDLOV) offers a unique narrative form that differs from that of Antonia's Line in terms of plot construction and character's motivations. There are more narrative gaps found in TDLOV as compared to Antonia's Line. TDLOV has demonstrated a loose chain of events, while characters are not motivated, not to mention its ambiguous ending. On the other hand, Antonia's Line shows that the main character has a goal to achieve with events found to have linked to one another, while its denouement is clear

Biocide susceptibilities and biofilm-forming capacities of Acinetobacter baumannii clinical isolates from Malaysia
Introduction. Acinetobacter baumannii is a Gram-negative nosocomial pathogen that has the capacity to develop resistance to all classes of antimicrobial compounds. However, very little is known regarding its susceptibility to biocides (antiseptics and disinfectants) and capacity to form biofilms, particularly for Malaysian isolates.Aim. To determine the susceptibility of A. baumannii isolates to commonly-used biocides, investigate their biofilm-forming capacities and the prevalence of biocide resistance and biofilm-associated genes.Methodology. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of 100 A. baumannii hospital isolates from Terengganu, Malaysia, towards the biocides benzalkonium chloride (BZK), benzethonium chloride (BZT) and chlorhexidine digluconate (CLX), were determined by broth microdilution. The isolates were also examined for their ability to form biofilms in 96-well microplates. The prevalence of biocide resistance genes qacA, qacE and qacDE1 and the biofilm-associated genes bap and abaI were determined by polymerase chain reaction (PCR).Results. Majority of the A. baumannii isolates (43%) showed higher MIC values (> 50 µg/mL) for CLX than for BZK (5% for MIC > 50 µg/mL) and BZT (9% for MIC > 50 µg/mL). The qacDE1 gene was predominant (63%) followed by qacE (28%) whereas no isolate was found harbouring qacA. All isolates were positive for the bap and abaI genes although the biofilm-forming capacity varied among the isolates.Conclusion. The Terengganu A. baumannii isolates showed higher prevalence of qacDE1 compared to qacE although no correlation was found with the biocides’ MIC values. No correlation was also observed between the isolates’ biofilm-forming capacity and the MIC values for the biocides
Prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibilities of Acinetobacter baumannii and non-baumannii Acinetobacters from Terengganu, Malaysia and their carriage of carbapenemase genes
A total of 153 non-repeat Acinetobacter spp. clinical isolates obtained in 2015 from Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah (HSNZ) in Terengganu, Malaysia, were characterized. Identification of the isolates at species level was performed by ribosomal DNA restriction analysis (ARDRA) followed by sequencing of the rpoB gene. The majority of the isolates (n=128; 83.7 %) were A. baumannii while the rest were identified as A. nosocomialis (n=16), A. calcoaceticus (n=5), A. soli (n=2), A. berezeniae (n=1) and A. variabilis (n=1). Multidrug resistance (MDR) was most prevalent in A. baumannnii (66.4 %) whereas only one non-baumannii isolate (A. nosocomialis) was MDR. The blaOXA-23 gene was the predominant acquired carbapenemase gene (56.2 %) and was significantly associated (P<0.001) with carbapenem resistance. However, no significant association was found for carbapenem resistance and isolates that contained the ISAba1-blaOXA-51 configuration.</p
Economic burden of managing Type 2 diabetes mellitus: Analysis from a Teaching Hospital in Malaysia
Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic disease that consumes a large amount of health-care resources. It is essential to estimate the cost of managing T2DM to the society, especially in developing countries. Economic studies of T2DM as a primary diagnosis would assist efficient health-care resource allocation for disease management. Objective: This study aims to measure the economic burden of T2DM as the primary diagnosis for hospitalization from provider's perspective. Methods: A retrospective prevalence-based costing study was conducted in a teaching hospital. Financial administrative data and inpatient medical records of patients with primary diagnosis (International Classification Disease-10 coding) E11 in the year 2013 were included in costing analysis. Average cost per episode of care and average cost per outpatient visit were calculated using gross direct costing allocation approach. Results: Total admissions for T2DM as primary diagnosis in 2013 were 217 with total outpatient visits of 3214. Average cost per episode of care was RM 901.51 (US 203.50) from provider's perspective. The annual economic burden of T2DM for hospitalized patients was RM 195,627.67 (US 654,450) for those being treated in the outpatient setting. Conclusions: Economic burden to provide T2DM care was higher in the outpatient setting due to the higher utilization of the health-care service in this setting. Thus, more focus toward improving T2DM outpatient service could mitigate further increase in health-care cost from this chronic disease
Aesthetic Objectivism : Instapoetry ‘Dark Love’ through Lang Leav’s Poetry (2013-2016)
The themes of Lang Leav's poems are mostly about love, loss and loneliness. Her poetry is very well received by many and is also said to promote a toxic view of love. This paper aims to examine the themes of love which we argue contain the elements of dark love. Dark love is divided into 'love as a sad notion' and 'love as a hopeless infatuation'. A textual analysis is done on selected poems using Frank Sibley's aesthetic theory of objectivism (1959). The analysis reveals that the poems promote 'dark love' that is grim, disappointing and pessimistic
Social Impact Assessment of Transportation Projects by Benefit or Damage Cost Analysis
Benefit/damage cost analysis is one of the alternative tools considered
in the Trans-Simpact 2000 for Klang Valley. It is derived from the
project evaluation technique that measures the benefit or damage cost
of a project. The study involves with the formulation of the benefit or
damage cost analysis model for SIA from two selected utility functions
namely linear and CES. The CES utility function is found to be the
best form to measure noise impact from an airport project in Osaka,
Japan. The application of the utility function however, will require
the calibration by the linear utility function
Reimagining the intersection of Minangkabau custom and Islam in film Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck (2013) / Mastura Muhammad … [et al.]
This paper examines the representation of the Malay muslim world in the Indonesian film Tenggelamnya Kapal van Der Wijck (2013) by using cinematic analysis and a narratological approach. The film intricately explores the interrelationships between Malay culture, focuses on Minangkabau customs and religion while highlighting the significant impacts of strict adherence to these customs within the Malay traditional settings on the love stories of the central characters, Zainuddin and Hayati. In this scholarly exposition, contention revolves around the assertion that the convergence of Malay traditional customs and Islam plays a crucial role and serves as a central premise for overcoming the conflicts and challenges encountered by the central characters in the narrative. Set in the Dutch East Indies during the early 20th century, the film follows the journeys of Zainuddin and Hayati as they navigate the complexities of cultural norms, religious beliefs, and societal expectations. Through textual analysis that emphasises cinematic techniques and a narratological approach, this exploration fosters valuable insights into the dynamics within the specific Malay Muslim community, enriching our comprehension of specific cultural identity and societal complexities. Besides serving as an entertainment outlet, the film unveils dramatic conflicts and social, and religious themes that propagate an insightful representation of the Malay muslim world. It also allows us to explore how cinema shapes and reflects specific cultural representations of the Malay world
