Authorship Characteristics in Sekitar Perpustakaan 1994-2003: A Bibliometric Study
This bibliometric study attempts to explore the authorship characteristics in Sekitar Perpustakaan, one of the earliest library and information science (LIS) periodicals published by the National Library of Malaysia (PNM – Perpustakaan Negara Malaysia) since 1977. A total of 148 articles published in 20 issues of Sekitar Perpustakaan covering the period 1994-2003 were analyzed. Author characteristics such as name, gender, status, institutional affiliation, language preference of articles and authorship of articles were obtained, studied and analyzed. The findings reveals single-authored articles far outnumbered multi-authored articles at 79%; female contributors (65.74% or 71 authors) predominates male contributors (34.26% or 37 authors); middle-level professionals were the largest contributors of articles (59.3%); 83 (56%) of the articles published were in Bahasa Melayu, the national language, while 65 (44%) articles were in English; the top ranked contributor is Ding Choo Ming, Senior Research Fellow of Institute of the Malay World & Civilization, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia with nine contributions; and the most prolific institution is PNM with 41 contributing authors
The effect of peroxyacetic acid treatment at elevated temperature onto the Indonesian coal microstructure / Mohd Azlan Mohd Ishak, Khudzir Ismail and Ahmad Faris Ismail
A sub-bituminous high sulphur Indonesian coal, namely Banjarmasin Hj. Ali-Aliansar (BMHA) has been treated with peroxyacetic acid, a mild oxidizing agent at temperature of 70°C and at atmospheric pressure. Initial findings have shown that this reagent is capable of removing up to 60 % of the total sulphur in the coal. Almost all pyrite together with ~18 % of simple organic sulphur are being removed from the coal without severely affecting the coal microstructures. Scanning electron microscope with energy dispersive x-ray (SEM-EDX) analysis was used to observe the molecular structure changes within the coal
Speciation and desulphurisation of sulphur forms in coals and derivatives and petroleum residues / Khudzir Ismail, Mohd Lias Kamal and Mohd Azlan Mohd Ishak
Combustion of coals to produce electricity has created environmental problems, one of which is sulphur which is converted to SO2 and SO3 gases. In order to produce a "clean coal", the pretreatment processes of sulphur removal from coal have to be effective to remove the inorganic (pyrite) and organic sulphur forms (thiolic, sulphidic and thiophenic). High pressure Temperature-Programmed Reduction (TPR) has been used for specifying the distribution of organic sulphur forms in both pyrite-free Malaysian (Mukah Balingian) and Indonesian coals (Banjarmasin Hj. Ali-Aliansar and Banjarmasin Coal A). The results obtained thus far, indicate that ca. 95% and 75% of sulphidic functionalities are present in Mukah Balingian (MB) and Banjarmasin Coal A (BMA), respectively, with 70%) thiophenic forms are present in Banjarmasin Hj. Ali- Aliansar (BMHAA)
Entrepreneurs in rural areas: Challenges and opportunities
Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Malaysia play an important role in supporting new economic model that focuses on innovation and creative industry. A review of the relevant small business literature, however, revealed that there are limited studies attempting to investigate the
issue of entrepreneurs in rural areas. This article attempts to study the role, contribution problems, and constraints related to the rural entrepreneurs, which may affect their operations, survival, growth, stability, and profitability. Using questionnaire and structured interview, the data for this study was collected from 700 rural entrepreneurs who had attended training and
development programs conducted by Cooperative and Entrepreneur Development Institute(CEDI) UUM from 2006 until 2008. Findings of the study indicate that rural entrepreneurs are motivated by necessity-driven factors and not opportunity-driven factor when starting up their
business. Nevertheless, the common problems and constraints that are faced by rural entrepreneurs ranging from lack of access to capital support scheme up to the outdated business
vision and value. The results of the study would help authority to improve rural entrepreneurs program conducted by government agencies and policy related to entrepreneurs
The usage of internet technology for marketing: Perspectives from local entrepreneurs of the small and medium hotel organizations in Langkawi
Small and medium hotel organizations (SMHOs) are recognized as one of the major businesses in the tourism industry. They usually provide employment benefits to the host community, expand local economy and therefore very important to accommodate tourism demand. Taking example
of SMHOs run by local entrepreneurs in Langkawi, this paper proposed that the internet is one of the most important tools for these organizations to market their products and services to a global market. It explored the perceptions of local entrepreneurs in Langkawi about utilizing the internet and analyzed the impact of this technology to their marketing strategy. This paper also highlights that internet technology provide a wide range of benefits to the entrepreneurs in terms of distributing information, establishing customers' relationship program and competing against big hotel companies. In the case of Langkawi, it was evident that the local entrepreneurs did not utilize the internet to its fullest potential and they were still adapting to this new technology as part of their marketing tool. By employing a qualitative method and using face-to-face semistructured interviews as a form of data collection, SMHOs operators were interviewed to examine the function of the internet for their organizations. The findings indicated that factors such as lack of IT's skill and limited financial resources were some of the issues that might slow down the progress of internet usage among SMHOs on the Island
Production and characterisation of biodiesel derived from Jatropha curcas oil using one-step supercritical-methanol extraction technique / Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hj. Mohd Azlan Mohd Ishak, Prof. Dr. Hj. Khudzir Hj. Ismail and Mohd Fauzi Abdullah
In-situ supercritical methanol transesterification for production of biodiesel from Jatropha curcas L. (JCL) seeds was successfully carried out via 1000 ml hightemperature high-pressure batch-wise reactor system in an absence of catalyst. In order to maximize the percent of crude biodiesel and FAMEs yield, four process variables were studied in this experiment, i.e. temperatures (180 to 300 °C), pressure (6 to 18 MPa), reaction time (5 to 35 min) and seeds-to-methanol ratio(l:15 to 1:45) using methanol as a solvent as well as reactant. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was used to reduce the number of experimental runs required to generate sufficient information for a statistically acceptable results. In order to determine the best conditions of the variables in this in-situ process, Central Composite Rotatable Design (CCRD) was used for regression analysis and analysis of variance (ANOVA). Using RSM, the best conditions were chosen at temperature of 280.0 °C, pressure of 12.7 MPa, 30.0 min of reaction time and 1:40 (w/v) of seeds-to-methanol ratio. Interestingly, the qualitative Gas Chromatography (GC) analysis on the crude biodiesel showed the presence of FAMEs, indicating that the transesterification reaction had occurred during the in-situ process. The average saturated FAMEs content of the seed samples is low: 18.1% for methyl palmitate (CI7:0) and 7.1% for methyl stearate (CI9:0). The average content of the unsaturated FAMEs, methyl oleate (C19:l) and methyl linoleate (C19:2) is considerably higher which is 39.5 and 33.2%, respectively which are comparable to the fatty acid composition in crude JCL oil feedstock. The properties of biodiesel produced from this in-situ supercritical methanol transesterification were comparable with fuel properties of commercial No. 2 Diesel. It was found that specific gravity of JCL biodiesel was 0.87 g/cmᶟ and it falls between the ASTM D6751 ranges. The kinematic viscosity is 5.27 cSt. The flash point was determined to be 100 °C while the pour point of JCL biodiesel was measured to be 0 °C which is slightly higher than that of No. 2 Diesel fuel. The cloud point was reported to be -2.06 °C. The calorific value of JCL biodiesel is 39.3 MJ/kg, which is almost 88% of the calorific value of diesel (44.8 MJ/kg). Thus, the hightemperature high-pressure batch-wise reactor system could be a promising approach in production of JCL biodiesel from in-situ supercritical methanol transesterification

An insight into the practical budgeting for productions of production houses / Shahrul Azlan Mohd. Zulkifli
This project paper is done with the intention of gaining an insight into the practical aspect of budgeting applied by the management of a Production House for its productions. The study was deemed essential as there were many grouses about the film industry being not so financially lucrative. There were a number of failed financial ventures into this glamourous industry. The creative and artistic elements of this business field have been discussed many a time in various media and sometimes with a touch of nostalgia. However, only a few have touched on the financial and management aspects. Thus the author would like to gain an insight into a component of that important but least studied aspect of the business, that is budgeting and how it is practised in this highly creative and artistic business in Malaysia
Why do some entrepreneurs succeed and others failed? The Timmons framework
Successful entrepreneurs share common attitudes and behaviors. They possess not only a creative and innovative flair, but also solid general management skills, business know-how, and sufficient contact. Some other failed attributing to mainly incompetence. These entrepreneurs do not know how to run the enterprise. They make major mistakes that an experienced, well-trained entrepreneur would quickly see and usually sidestep. In tying to explain this phenomenon, Timmons develops a framework relating the driving forces that dominate the entrepreneurial process. The Timmons model incorporates the following aspects: (a) It is opportunity driven; (b)It is driven by a lead entrepreneur and an entrepreneurial team; (c) It is resource parsimonious and creative; (d) It depends on the fit and balance among these; and (e) It is integrated and holistic
