No full textThe text is a discussion of the UMCS publicationPolskość i europejskość w Josepha Conrada wizjach historii, polityki i etyki[Polishness and Europeanism in Joseph Conrad's vision of history, politics and ethics] edited by Wieslaw Krajka. This is the second volume in the series Joseph Conrad a Polska, Europa Środkowo-Wschodnia i świat [Joseph Conrad and Poland, Central and Eastern Europe and the world], is part of the research activities carried out by the Conrad Research Department at the UMCS. The monograph, like its predecessor, is a selection of texts previously published in English in the 22 volumes of the series Conrad: Eastern and Western Perspectives. The review highlights the qualities of the publication, which presents works by leading Polish and foreign Conrad experts. In addition to popularizing the author, it also is an attempt to recover Conrad, who is almost absent in the Polish education.Tekst jest omówieniem publikacji Wydawnictwa UMCS Polskość i europejskość w Josepha Conrada wizjach historii, polityki i etyki pod redakcją Wiesława Krajki. An exploration of the outsider's role in selected works by Joseph Conrad, Malcolm Lowry, V.S. Naipaul.
No full textPhDThis thesis explores ways in which the outsider questions rather than confirms
dominant cultural values whilst avoiding the crudity of overt politicisation. I argue
that the outsider's preference for an observer's stance is not so much an act which
denies responsibility to the world of his day, but rather a means of reassessing its
priorities.
In Section One, I discuss Conrad's role as an outsider in the age of Empires. I
demonstrate the ways in which Conrad employs narrators, frequently using strategies
of irony which can be and have been read in very different ways. I argue that Conrad
uses irony as a tool for condemnation rather than condonement of imperialist practice,
if not its ideology.
In Section Two, I discuss Lowry as an emigre from England (so contrasting
him with Conrad, the immigrant from Europe), and examine his dissenting voice
which opposes bourgeois prejudice against the working class, a totalising ideology
like Fascism, and a Western rationalism which sees too rigid a distinction between
sanity and madness. I demonstrate how Lowry as an outsider reacts to the age of
twentieth century World Wars.
In Section Three, I discuss Naipaul's role as an outsider in the age of
decolonisation, when bogus liberals and false redeemers fail to rebuild the newly
independent post-colonial states. As in Conrad's case, I show how a failure to read
Naipaul's ironic tone of voice has given rise to radically divergent views as to what he
is about. I also link Conrad and Naipaul through their cultural negotiation between the
'centre' and its peripheries.
By looking at these three writers in chronological order and offering a
comparative perspective on their work, I highlight the outsider's disturbing, yet
illuminating role within a historical context. I also draw attention to creative tensions
between artistic concerns and a serious political purpose. I assess the outsider as
observer and man of conscience rather than as a` mere onlooker. I conclude that the
outsider also fulfils a social obligation by promoting critical awareness on the reader's
side by means of his defamiliarising perspective
Joseph Conrad and Polish Romantic Silence: In Search of Commonalities
No full textThe article attempts to extend the existing Polish-language research on the semantics of silence in Joseph Conrad’s works, and to interpret this semantics, in the view of the Polish literary tradition, to which Conrad indicated his debt subtly but quite unambiguously (e.g. in an interview with Marian Dąbrowski from 1914). The author highlights the perspective of the so-called Ukrainian school in the Polish Romantic Literature, suggesting that it was from this imagination (more than from Mickiewicz’s) that the author of Almayer’s Folly could adopt specific figures: “the cosmic night” and “the ontological silence”. No full textThe article is a critical review of the book Conrad a Polska comprising analyses devoted to Conrad's Polish heritage by academics of various nationalities. The author emphasises the fact that a variety of theoretical and methodological perspectives and research points of view from which the writer's biography and work are shown allows the refreshing of Conrad's portrayal as a man torn between various identities and worlds. In her opinion, the Polish reader can also be interested in using the Conradian prism for showing the particular characteristics of the external reception of our culture, emphasising those of its features and elements which form the image of Polishness abroad.Uniwersytet im. Opracowanie podzielone jest na trzy części, które dotyczą odrębnych dziedzin sztuki - powieści graficznych i komiksów, przetworzeń literackich oraz przedstawień teatralnych i filmowych. Autorka, przeprowadzając drobiazgową analizę wybranych dzieł, stawia nowatorską tezę, że adaptacjom podlegają nie tylko utwory Conrada, ale także jego biografia. Publikacja stanowi cenny wkład w dziedzinę studiów conradologicznych, znacząco uzupełniając stan badań.Questa recensione è dedicata alla valutazione della monografia di Agnieszka Adamowicz-Pośpiech Adattamenti della biografia e delle opere di Joseph Conrad nella cultura contemporanea. Lo studio è diviso in tre parti che riguardano aree distinte dell’attività artistica del Conrad: graphic novel e fumetti, trasformazioni letterarie e produzioni teatrali e cinematografiche. Agnieszka Adamowicz-Pośpiech, attraverso un’analisi approfondita delle opere selezionate, avanza una tesi innovativa secondo cui non solo le opere di Conrad sono soggette ad „adattamenti”, ma anche elementi della sua biografia. La pubblicazione costituisce un prezioso contributo nel campo della ricerca sul Conrad (conradologia), integrando in modo significativo la conoscenza sull’opera dello scrittore.The review surveys Agnieszka Adamowicz-Pośpiech’s monograph Adaptacje biografii i twórczości Josepha Conrada w kulturze współczesnej. The study is divided into three parts, which concern separate fields of art – graphic novels and comic books, literary transformations, and theatrical and film productions. The author, conducting a meticulous analysis of selected works, puts forward an innovative thesis that not only Conrad’s works but also his biography are subject to adaptations. Intertextual Masks of Joseph Conrad
No full textThe article analyses Joseph Conrad’s reminiscences from the perspective of intertextuality.
The author argues that Conrad, in order to write about his biography, employed
a number of intertextual masks – an intertextual filter. Enlarging on the events
from his past life, he employed various literary conventions, eg. parody, travesty, quotation
or paraphrase. W artykule są analizowane wspomnienia Josepha Conrada A Personal Record
z perspektywy intertekstualności. Autorka stawia tezę, że Conrad potrzebował swoistego
„filtra intertekstualnego”, „intertekstualnej maski”, aby pisać o swojej biografii.
Przedstawiając wydarzenia z własnego życia, zastosował różne konwencje literackie,
m.in. parodię, trawestację, cytat i parafrazę
