Key words: Character, Student Attitude, Freedom Writers Teachers have a role in changing student attitudes. Teachers with strong characteristics will help students change their attitudes slowly. The characters referred to in this study are characters in fiction. The author is interested in reviewing characters in fiction because some characters in fiction are relevant when applied in addressing a problem. The Freedom Writers film by Richard LaGravenese shows the strong character and important role of a young teacher named Erin Gruwell in changing the attitudes of her students. The statements of research problem are: 1) how are the character of Erin Gruwell and her students? 2) how does Erin Gruwell change the attitude of her students? 3) What is the effect of Erin Gruwell's efforts to change the attitude of her students? This research is intended to explain: 1) the character of Erin Gruwell and her students, 2) the way Erin Gruwell changes the attitudes of her students, 3) the effect of changing Erin Gruwell's students' attitudes. The method in this research is descriptive qualitative. The data presented in this study is in the form of word, not number. The data in this study is in the form of dialogue between characters. This study has one main data source that is the film script Freedom Writers by Richard LaGravenese. The results of this study indicate that: (1) Erin Gruwell has protagonist, major, and static characters. Meanwhile, the students have dynamic and minor characters. (2) There are two approaches used by Erin Gruwell to change the students‟ attitude, the first is the judgmental approach that judging the attitude of her students who act like gangster and what will be the consequences if they do not change. The second is a self-persuasion approach by continuing to foster hope and confidence in the hearts of students. (3) there are two effects resulting from Erin Gruwell's efforts, those are changing habits and innovation. The bad attitudes attached to Erin Gruwell's students slowly disappeared and then resulted in new innovations in the Woodrow Wilson high school environment

Citronella (Cymbopogon winterianus) oil contains various phytochemical compounds which have antibacterial activity such as citronellal, citronellol, geraniol, and citral. These compounds can inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, two bacterias  often found on the palm of hands. This study aimed to formulate citronella oil into a spray gel hand sanitizer. It used an experimental laboratory method. Spray gel hand sanitizers were developed from citronella oil using different concentration  of gelling agent Carbopol 940  (0.2%; 0.3%) and humectant propylene glycol (10%; 15%). All formulas were evaluated in term of organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, spraying patterns and stickiness. All of the obtained spray gel hand sanitizer presented a white viscous liquid having a distintive odor of citronella. Four formulas  had pH in the range of 6.71 – 6.93 and viscosity in the range of 109.50.8 – 113.50.5 cps. The results showed that formulas 2 and 4 did not meet the requirements for spraying patterns and stickiness because the preparations clumped when sprayed from the spray applicator.  Based on this study, it can be concluded that formula 1 had the best characteristics in term of organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, spraying pattern and stickiness. The concentration of carbopol 940 affected the physical properties of spray gel hand sanitizer

The use of medicinal plants for medicine has been prevalent since ancient times and various plants are used for public health. One of the plants that is often used in herbal medicine is celery, either directly in the form of vegetables or as an extract from the Apium graveolens L plant. Celery extract has previously been given to white mice, and can significantly protect the gastric mucosa and suppress gastric acid secretion. Traditional medicine derived from plant extracts is generally more desirable in tablet or capsule dosage forms. The objective of this study is to determine the best filler in the celery herb extract capsule formulation. This study used a pure experimental method using celery herb extracts which were formulated in capsule dosage forms. The powder fillers used in this formulation are Avicel 101, Avicel 102, and Amylum maydis. The extract capsules were then evaluated for uniformity of weight and disintegration time. Based on the evaluation results, the capsules formulated with Avicel 102 filler gave the best results with an average weight uniformity of 380.98 ± 4.41 mg and disintegration time of 2.64 ± 0.31 minutes. It is advisable to continue the evaluation of the dissolution test for the capsule preparation which gives the best result. The use of medicinal plants for medicine has been prevalent since ancient times and various plants are used for public health. The author of this article studies the attempts to conquer the Baltic fuel market by Donetsk coal at the beginning of the 20th century. Author analyzed the main delivery directions of coal from the Donbas to the Baltic consumers (railway, transportations by the sea around the Europe, Dnieper–Dvina Canal). The study on general scientific and special methods of history (statistic, comparative-historical, retrospective etc.) is based; it was used also the interdisciplinary and corporatist approaches. On the basis of the documentation of representative organizations of entrepreneurs, materials of periodical publications and government orders shows the author of this article that extractive capacity of the Donetsk coal industry at the beginning of the 20-th century significantly prevailed the existing demand. Author described the peculiarities of the Baltic fuel market (dependence on English fuel, interconnection of coal imports and grain exports from the North-West region). It was traced the evolution of the views of statesmen about the replacement of Donetsk coal on English coal in the ports of the Baltic Sea from economic expediency to issues of national security. Author explained the necessary components for the delivery the Donetsk fuel by railway (reduction of tariffs, building of additional railway lines and provision of the railway system by goods carriages), the delivery method by sea is accept as the most probable way. Author is focused the attention on the large-scale project of the river connection of the Black and Baltic Seas – the Kherson–Riga waterway.Despite the unfulfilled plan of conquest, the Baltic fuel market by Donetsk fuel at the beginning of the 20-th century, the directions of economic improvements that by entrepreneurs were developed became a demonstrative indication of their unity, a strategic vision of possible ways of developing the region. Therefore, it will be of scientific and practical interest to apply to the historical experience of economic interaction (or developed projects) in the Black Sea-Baltic region, the further study of mutually beneficial economic projects between Ukraine and the Baltic States.

The article deals with the characteristics of interictal neuronal activity changes in frontal cortex different layers of rats during the pentylenetetrazol kindling development. Two types of EEG activity were shown to be presented in these conditions. The 1st type of neuronal activity characterized by motor cortex II/III layers neuronal activity hyperactivation. The 2nd type neuronal activity characterized by the motor cortex deep (IV-VI) layers neurons hyperactivation. The authors conclude that the registered neuronal activity differences in the conditions of the chronic seizures experimental model mark the functional relationship between the epileptic and antiepileptic brain systems. They are also the basis for cortical networks formation and activation peculiarities further investigation in conditions of neurons excessive activation development during the prolonged convulsive influences. Key words: kindling, pentylenetetrazol, frontal cortex, interictal intracellular activity, proconvulsive and anticonvulsive mechanisms.

ADMINISTRATION OF UKRAINIAN COAL EXPORTS TO THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE (LATE 19th AND EARLY 20th CENTURIES)

    No full text
Period in the late 19th – early 20th centuries was a rapid economic recovery in Ukraine. The excess of production over the volume of the domestic consumer market encouraged entrepreneurs to export coal, primarily to the nearest foreign markets. The market of the Ottoman Empire was determined as a important in that respect. The study of the export direction of commercial activity of Ukrainian entrepreneurs became possible as a result of attracting a wide range of sources including Government and business statistical directories, office documents of representative organizations, articles from periodicals of that time, archival materials, etc. The author analyses export techniques of Ukrainian businessmen as one of the components of business culture wich consists of introducing organizational and logistical techniques for export tasks, studying global experience and using the most successful and effective mechanisms to influence the process of invading foreign markets. The paper shows that Ukrainian entrepreneurs had resorted to a variety of tools to promote their products including business meetings and participating in the “Floating Exhibition”. The author concludes that, despite all efforts, Ukrainian entrepreneurs lost in competition with more developed countries and they had to pay attention to the increased domestic demand. The idea of Ukrainian business community to organize a permanent trade mission in Constantinople in the form of a chamber of commerce, which originated in the early XX century, is implemented at the present stage of mutually beneficial partnership between Ukraine and Turkey

    Do Non-Governmental Organizations Impact Health?

    No full text
According to world polity theory, international health and womens non-governmental organizations should improve health in poor nations by providing health, reproductive, and educational services. However, there are suggestions that their effectiveness may be limited by a variety of factors. These factors include their projects being small-scale, ad hoc, or reformist. Further, non-governmental organizations may implement projects that satisfy donor interests rather than a local populations needs. In order to evaluate these claims, we construct cross-national models of infant morality from 1990 to 2005 for a sample of 74 poor nations. Initially, we find no support for world polity theory claims that health and womens non-governmental organizations decrease infant mortality. However, we re-specify the models to test a political opportunity structure hypothesis that democracy enhances the ability of non-governmental organizations to improve health. We do so by including interaction terms between these two variables and find substantial support for this hypothesis. Specifically, the results suggest that health and womens non-governmental organizations decrease infant mortality in democratic but not repressive nations. © The Author(s), 2010

Information Literacy Strategy Development: Study Prescribes Strategic Management Framework for Academic Institutions. A Review of: Corrall, Sheila.

    No full text
Objective – To examine the development of information literacy (IL) strategies in higher education by assessing content and presentation of IL strategy documentation, and to explore the application of corporate strategy concepts and techniques to IL strategy.Design – Comparative, multi-case study. Qualitative analysis.Setting – U.K. universities.Subjects – Twelve information literacy strategy documents from ten institutions. Methods – Google was searched for IL strategy documents (restricted to the ac.uk domain), the LISINFOLITERACY discussion list was queried, and the Web sites of all U.K. universities were searched for a total sample of 12 documents at 10 institutions. Results of the data capture were discussed in the context of the literature on strategic management.Main Results – Corporate strategy tools and techniques are extensive in the literature, trending toward an emphasis on holistic thinking and marketing concepts. Many themes identified in the documents were consistent with the literature. While the format and style varied, all documents emphasized the integration of IL into subject curricula. All stressed the need to build collaborative partnerships between library/information staff and academic staff.Significantly, many strategies aimed to reach the broader institution, although poor articulation undermined this ambitious goal. In three, IL intervention was intended for the whole university community. However, the target audience often was not well-defined. Seven of the IL strategies identified additional partnerships to effect change at the policy level. Another key theme was the adoption of recognized IL standards; seven proposed the SCONUL (1999) model. All strategies recognized the importance of learning outcomes; six stated them explicitly. Prominent was the integration of e-learning resources, namely online tutorials. Many strategies recognized the need for marketing and advocacy activities. Half considered professional or staff development issues, as supported in the literature. All strategies explained in detail the context of their IL proposals, citing external challenges (growth of digital information, employer demand), external evidence (official reports, benchmarking statements, studies), and internal evidence (stakeholder concerns, institutional strategies) to support the need for IL. The documents specified a range of teaching modes from informal reference desk encounters to strategic positioning in relation to the broader community. Half defined or described IL. Seven documents were labelled strategies, but many did not comply with content elements defined in the literature. Other features of the literature poorly represented in the documents included: the need for well articulated objectives, mission and vision statements, attendance to broader strategic issues, stakeholder analysis, and the prioritizing of IL activities with portfolio development. Only two had action plans. Seven documents were in the public domain. Conclusion – Information literacy is recognized as an essential competence for participation in higher education, the workplace and society, and information professionals have long promoted IL. In response to the changing information environment they have sought to formalize policies and strategies to embed IL institutionally, working collaboratively with key stakeholders in the process. In this study of strategic documentation from 10 U.K. universities, IL objectives were consistent although the format and style of documentation varied. The author concludes that one or more strategic management models or tools available could improve IL strategy development, consistency, and coherency. Most importantly, an overarching strategic management framework should be used to resolve ambiguity and inconsistency, improve articulation, and maximize the effectiveness of strategy documents, thus avoiding weaknesses identified in the study. As noted by the author, the library literature has progressed to include strategic management concepts evidenced, in part, by the number of libraries using Kaplan and Norton’s scorecard system. But improvements can be made: conforming to strategic planning norms could strengthen IL strategy. Elements of models from the public or private sectors might be tailored to meet the specific needs of IL strategies. Further research could identify suitable strategy models for IL development. The process of implementing IL strategy should also be considered in future research. The author notes it would be interesting to explore the relationship between IL strategies and other organizational strategies and to compare IL strategies inother sectors
