O riso unido ao distanciamento: correlações com o conto “Jacinto”, de Alphonsus de Guimaraens, Cândido, ou o otimismo, de Voltaire e nuanças de um Alphonsus humorista em arquivos históricos / The Laughter Coupled with Distancing: Interconnections with the Short Story “Jacinto” by Alphonsus de Guimaraens, the Candide: or Optimism by Voltaire and Nuances of an Alphonsus Humorist in Archives
Resumo: Este artigo trata do riso unido ao distanciamento, correlações com o conto “Jacinto (recordações de Vila Rica)”, de Alphonsus de Guimaraens e o livro Cândido, ou o otimismo, de Voltaire, e também busca traçar um perfil humorista do poeta com base nos arquivos do Museu Casa Alphonsus Guimaraens. Ambos os autores, embora vivessem em países e épocas diferentes, de certo modo, acabaram se aproximando em suas escritas. Um, filósofo, dramaturgo e historiador, outro, poeta simbolista, se renderam aos artifícios da comicidade e produziram trabalhos que pertencem ao campo humorístico. No caso de Alphonsus, autor destacado neste trabalho, há uma personalidade que necessita ser delineada nesse sentido, uma vez que há uma grande quantidade de criações relacionadas ao riso nos manuscritos e outros documentos do Museu Casa Alphonsus Guimaraens, e todos, normalmente o conheciam como um poeta taciturno, o “solitário de Mariana”. No geral este estudo busca investigar como Voltaire, em Cândido, ou o otimismo, e Alphonsus no conto “Jacinto (recordações de Vila Rica)”, usam a ironia para provocar o riso, algo que, numa avaliação mais profunda, traduz uma decepção com o social e com a realidade existencial, gerando uma espécie de distanciamento. Pretende, por fim, com base em pesquisas em documentos históricos, encontrar uma lembrança dessa outra faceta de Alphonsus. O livro O riso e o risível: na história do pensamento, de Verena Alberti e o capítulo “Rabelais e a história do riso” em Cultura popular na idade média e no renascimento, de Mikhail Bakhtin, completam a investigação.Palavras-chave: Alphonsus Guimaraens; museu; Voltaire; riso; Jacinto (recordações de Vila Rica; Cândido, ou o otimismo.Abstract: This article deals with the laughter coupled with distancing, interconnections with the short story “Jacinto (recordações de Vila Rica)” by Alphonsus de Guimaraens and the book Candide: or optimism by Voltaire, also seeks to draw a humorous profile of the poet Alphonsus based on the archives of the Casa Alphonsus Guimaraens Museum. The two authors lived at different time but ended up approaching their writings. One was a philosopher, playwright and historian and the other was a symbolist poet and both surrendered to the comic and created works that are situated in the humorous field. There is an existence that needs to be delineated in this sense in the case of Alphonsus, the author highlighted in this work, since there is a great amount of creations related to laughter in the manuscripts and other documents of the Casa Alphonsus de Guimaraens Museum, and most of people knew him as a taciturn poet, the “solitary of Mariana”. In general, this study seeks to investigate how Voltaire in Candide: or optimism and Alphonsus in “Jacinto (recordações de Vila Rica)” use an irony to provoke laughter, something that with a deeper evaluation translates a disappointment with social and existential reality generating a kind of detachment. Finally based on research in historical documents it seeks to find a memory of this other facet of Alphonsus. Alphonsus de Guimaraens: o vocabulário neológico em sua obra
The aim of this work is to map the neologic vocabulary in Alphonsus de Guimaraens s
literary production to offer a contribution towards the creation of a linguistic glossary adding
to the Dictionary of the Literary Neologisms of the Brazilian Portuguese by professor
Evandro Silva Martins. This is a bibliographical research in which it is done the study of
some processes of the neologic creation, sustained by Alphonsus de Guimaraens s poetry and
prose. It is started from the hypothesis that Alphonsus de Guimaraens, through his neologic
creation, promotes a certain rescue of the Portuguese Language, either by revisiting meanings,
or by creating new meanings for old words, or even creating new words. The semantic
neologism usually comes from a lexical basis previously existent in the language; however it
assumes a new sense, due to its new context. Therefore, there is a great importance of the
context for the good neologic interpretation. Seeking to reach the specific objectives of this
research, we look for checking Alphonsus de Guimaraens s contribution for the lexicon of the
language and which of his semantic neologisms are capable to subsidize the elaboration of the
proposed dictionary. Methodologically, it is made, firstly, a neologic extraction in the author's
work, then we check their appearance in the dictionaries that are selected as the corpus of
exclusion. Next, we choose which words may form the glossary checking the gender and how
many times these words occur. Then it is made a listing of the existent bases in the corpus of
exclusion and, soon after, it is made an analysis of the linguistic or cultural notes around these
words followed by an analysis of the sense of the same ones inside of that context. The results
prove the hypothesis of Alphonsus de Guimaraens s neologic creativity, particularly founded
through the literary esthetics of the Symbolism, as well as the aims of our research. It is also
inferred that Alphonsus de Guimaraens s great neologic creation happens, in consequence of
the historical, political and literary moment (of profound search of the lost values in the
deepest soul states) in which this author lived. Hence it can be seen the sovereignty of the
context as explanatory of the new terms and re-significance of the old ones. Alphonsus de
Guimaraens s contribution for the perenniality of the literary neologisms found in the
Brazilian Portuguese will have, no doubt, according to the neologic observatory delimited by
the major project by professor Evandro, a distinguished place in that dictionary.Mestre em LinguísticaEste trabalho tem como objetivo fazer o levantamento do vocabulário neológico na obra de
Alphonsus de Guimaraens para oferecer uma parcela de contribuição na criação de um
glossário lingüístico, trazendo subsídios para a confecção do Dicionário dos Neologismos
Literários do Português do Brasil, um projeto-maior do professor doutor Evandro Silva
Martins. Esta é uma pesquisa bibliográfica, que consiste no estudo de alguns processos de
criação neológica, apoiada na poesia e na prosa de Alphonsus de Guimaraens. Parte-se da
hipótese de que, Alphonsus de Guimaraens, através de sua criação neológica, promove um
certo resgate da Língua Portuguesa, seja revisitando significados, seja criando novos
significados para significantes já existentes, seja criando novos significantes. O neologismo
semântico parte, normalmente, de uma base lexical já existente na língua; porém assume um
novo sentido devido a sua nova contextualização. Por isso, a grande importância do contexto
para a boa interpretação neológica. Visando alcançar os objetivos específicos da pesquisa,
faz-se a checagem da contribuição de Alphonsus de Guimaraens para o léxico da língua e
quais os neologismos semânticos, em sua produção literária, capazes de subsidiar a
elaboração do dicionário proposto. Metodologicamente, em primeiro lugar, faz-se um
levantamento dos possíveis neologismos na obra do autor; depois confere-se a sua existência
nos dicionários eleitos como corpus de exclusão; daí, elege-se os vocábulos que constituem o
glossário, verificando-se o gênero e o número de ocorrências dos vocábulos encontrados. Em
seguida, faz-se uma listagem das bases existentes no corpus de exclusão, e, por fim, faz-se
uma análise das notas lingüísticas e/ou culturais em torno destes vocábulos, seguida de uma
análise dos sentidos dos mesmos dentro daquele contexto. Os resultados confirmam a
hipótese da criatividade neológica de Alphonsus de Guimaraens, especialmente fundamentada
pela estética literária do simbolismo, assim como os objetivos da nossa pesquisa. Conclui-se
que a grande criação neológica de Alphonsus de Guimaraens se dá, também, pelo momento
histórico, político e literário (de busca profunda dos valores perdidos nos mais profundos
estados de alma) em que viveu este autor. Portanto se vê a soberania do contexto como
explicativo do novo e re-significância do velho. A contribuição de Alphonsus de Guimaraens
para a perenização dos neologismos literários encontrados no Português do Brasil terá, sem
dúvida, de acordo com o observatório neológico delimitado pelo projeto-maior, um lugar de
destaque naquele dicionário

Between tradition and modernity: the chronicles of Alphonsus de Guimaraens in the newspaper Conceição do Serro
O escritor mineiro Alphonsus de Guimaraens (1870-1921) é comumente lembrado pela história e crítica literária devido à qualidade de seus poemas simbolistas, responsáveis por ter elevado o autor ao patamar de cânone das letras brasileiras. Além de poeta, Alphonsus de Guimaraens desempenhou por aproximadamente 30 anos, de 1890 a 1921, a função de cronista, contribuindo com a publicação de jornais. De 1904 a 1905, especificamente, Guimaraens dirigiu e produziu o jornal Conceição do Serro, além de ter publicado crônicas de sua autoria em praticamente todas as 45 edições do periódico. As crônicas de Alphonsus de Guimaraens, sobretudo as publicadas em jornais, correspondem a parte considerável da produção literária desse autor que se encontra em esquecimento. Dessa forma, ao voltar-se para o cânone sobre a perspectiva do esquecimento, com vistas a resgatar parte da história e da memória literária que não foi institucionalizada, este trabalho pretende investigar as crônicas de Alphonsus de Guimaraens publicadas no jornal mineiro Conceição do Serro. Para tanto, após levantamento e transcrição das crônicas, serão discutidas, primeiramente, a profícua relação da literatura com o jornal, assim como a relação do escritor mineiro com os jornais. Posteriormente, este trabalho discute aproximações e distanciamentos entre a poesia de Guimaraens e as crônicas do Conceição do Serro, com ênfase nas temáticas lua / luar e religião / religiosidade. Apesar do diálogo das crônicas com temas fortemente desenvolvidos na poesia do autor, os textos em prosa não se restringem aos parâmetros da estética simbolista. Por fim, este trabalho discute como as crônicas de Alphonsus de Guimaraens, partindo do pressuposto de que Minas Gerais é o lugar da tradição, parecem evidenciar um projeto de manutenção dessa, condenando, desse modo, as transformações sociais provocadas pela modernidade. Esse projeto será evidenciado, principalmente, nas crônicas que abordam o papel social da mulher e o seu direito ao voto. Os cronistas de Alphonsus reafirmam o papel da mulher enquanto mãe, esposa e dona do lar, restrita ao espaço privado, rechaçando, consequentemente, a luta pelo direito ao voto feminino e ao espaço público. Por conseguinte, as crônicas evidenciam Alphonsus de Guimaraens cronista um observador atento às transformações de seu tempo. Palavras-chave: Literatura brasileira. História Literária. Tradição.The Minas Gerais writer Alphonsus de Guimaraens (1870-1921) is commonly remembered by history and literary criticism because of the quality of his symbolist poems, responsible for raising the author to the level of canon of Brazilian letters. Beyond that, Alphonsus de Guimaraens performed the role of chronicler for approximately 30 years, from 1890 to 1921, contributing to newspapers from the cities where he lived. Specifically, from 1904 to 1905, Guimaraens directed and produced the newspaper Conceição do Serro, and published chronicles of his own in virtually all 45 editions of the periodical. Alphonsus de Guimaraens's chronicles, especially those published in newspapers, correspond to a considerable part of his literary production which is in oblivion. Thus, by turning to the canon on the perspective of forgetfulness, aiming at retrieving part of history and literary memory that was not institutionalized, this paper intends to investigate the chronicles of Alphonsus de Guimaraens published in the Minas Gerais newspaper Conceição do Serro. For this, after survey and transcription of the chronicles, will be discussed, firstly, the fruitful relationship of literature with the newspaper, as well as the relationship of the Minas Gerais writer with the newspapers. Subsequently, this paper discusses approximations and distances between Guimaraens' poetry and Conceição do Serro's chronicles, with emphasis on the themes moon / moonlight and religion / religiosity. Despite the dialogue of the chronicles with strongly developed themes in the author's poetry, prose texts are not restricted to the parameters of symbolist aesthetics. Finally, this paper discusses how the chronicles of Alphonsus de Guimaraens, based on the assumption that Minas Gerais is the place of tradition, seem to evidence a project of maintaining this, thus condemning the social transformations brought about by modernity. This project will be evidenced mainly in the chronicles that address the social role of women and their right to vote. Alphonsus's chroniclers reaffirm the role of women as mothers, wives and homemakers, restricted to the private space, thus rejecting the struggle for the right to female voting and public space. Consequently, the chronicles show Alphonsus de Guimaraens chronicler an observer attentive to the transformations of his time. Keywords: Brazilian literature. Cranial computed tomography utilization in head trauma in a Southern Nigerian tertiary hospital
Background: Computed tomography (CT) is the imaging modality of choice in evaluating patients with acute head trauma. Objective: The objective of this study is to assess CT utilization in head trauma in University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) with reference to sociodemographic characteristics and cause of injury. Materials and Methods: A retrospective study of patients who had CT scanning done for head trauma in the UBTH, from 2011 to 2013 was undertaken. Medical Records of patients with special emphasis on the patient′s demographic characteristics and detailed information about the cause of injury of the patients were obtained from the accident and emergency department of the hospital. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 17. Results: A total of 1387 patients with male: female ratio of 3.7:1 were studied. The mean age of the patients was 33.2 ± 18.8 years. Road traffic accidents (RTA) were the predominant cause of injury among the patients accounting for 62.6% of the cases. Gunshot injury (GSI) and patients struck by objects accounted for only 2.7% and 1.3% of the cases, respectively. The Glasgow coma score (GCS) of the patients revealed that 42.0%, 26.1%, and 31.9% of patients had severe head injury, moderate injury, and mild injury, respectively. Conclusion: Road traffic accidents involving young adult males constituted the predominant cause of injury in patients that had brain CT in UBTH. There is an urgent need for improvement in the condition of roads and enforcement of the use of protective devices by road users to curb the epidemic of head injury resulting from RTAs

Prevalence of sexually transmitted infections among pregnant women attending antenatal clinics in West Coast Region of The Gambia
Background:
Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) are the second most common cause of healthy life years lost by women in the 15 – 44 years age group in Africa.
Aim/Objective:
To determine the prevalence of STIs among pregnant women attending antenatal care (ANC) clinics in the West Coast Region of The Gambia.
Materials and Methods:
Blood, urine, and high vaginal swabs samples from 280 pregnant women attending ANC in Brikama District Hospital, Brikama, and Bandung Maternity and Child Health Hospital, Bandung were examined. Serum samples were tested for HIV using western blot technique and for syphilis using the Venereal Disease Research Laboratory (VDRL) test, and rapid plasma regimen. Candida albicans, Group B Streptococcus and Neisseria gonorrhoea were identified using Analytical Profile Index (API). Direct urine microscopy was used to identify C. albicans and Trichomonas vaginalis while Chlamydia trachomatis was identified using Direct Fluorescent Antibody (DFA) test.
Results:
The overall prevalence of STIs was 53.6%. The pathogenic agents isolated were Candida albicans (31.8%), Streptococcus agalactiae (15.0%), Treponema pallidum (6.8%), HIV (5.7%), Trichomonas vaginalis (3.9%), Neisseria gonorrhoea (1.8%) and Chlamydia trachomatis (0.7%). STIs were more prevalent among women in the younger age group of 15 – 24 years (54.7%), unemployed (54.0%), Primipara (62.3%), and in the third trimester of pregnancy (72.7%).
Conclusion:
A high prevalence of STIs was found among pregnant women attending ANC in the West Coast region of The Gambia. Public health intervention programmes should be strengthened to promote the sexual and reproductive health of pregnant women in The Gambia
Household Cooking Fuel Use among Residents of a Sub-Urban Community in Nigeria: Implications for Indoor Air Pollution
Knowledge of sexually transmitted infections amongst pregnant women attending antenatal clinics in West Coast region of The Gambia
Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) during pregnancy remain a public health concern especially in developing countries including The Gambia. This study assessed the knowledge of STIs and its associated factors amongst pregnant women attending antenatal clinics in West Coast region of The Gambia. A descriptive cross-sectional study design was used. Two hundred and eighty pregnant women attending antenatal care in Brikama District Hospital, Brikama, and Bandung Maternity and Child Health Hospital, Bandung, who gave their consent, participated in this study. The instrument for data collection was an interviewer administered questionnaire. Data was analyzed using IBM SPSS for Windows, version 21.0. Level of significance was set at p < 0.05. All the respondents were aware of HIV/AIDS and their main source of information was from health care providers. However, most of them 263 (93.9%) had poor knowledge of STIs. Level of education (p < 0.001) and employment status (p = 0.001) had significant association with level of knowledge of STIs. This study also identified low level of education [AOR: 0.04 (95% CI: 0.01 – 0.35)], and unemployment [AOR: 21.97 (95% CI: 1.57 – 306.65)] as statistically significant predictors of low level of knowledge of STIs amongst the respondents. There is need for mass media campaigns and other public health measures aimed at increasing knowledge of STIs as this will herald effective intervention strategies towards the prevention of STIs.Les infections sexuellement transmissibles (IST) pendant la grossesse demeurent un problème de santé publique, en particulier dans les pays en développement, y compris la Gambie. Cette étude a évalué la connaissance des IST et de ses facteurs associés auprès des femmes enceintes qui fréquentent des cliniques prénatales dans la région de la Côte Ouest de la Gambie. Un plan d'étude descriptif transversal a été utilisé. Deux cent quatre-vingts femmes enceintes qui fréquentent des cliniques des soins prénatals dans des hôpitaux du district de Brikama et la Maternité et l‘Hôpital des enfants à Bandung, qui ont donné leur consentement, ont participé à cette étude. L'instrument de collecte de données était un questionnaire administré par un intervieweur. Les données ont été analysées à l'aide d'IBM SPSS pour Windows, la version 21.0. Le niveau de signification a été fixé à p <0,05. Toutes les interviewées étaient au courant du VIH / sida et leur principale source d‘information était les fournisseurs de soins de santé. Cependant, la plupart d'entre elles 263 (93,9%) avaient une faible connaissance des IST. Le niveau d'éducation (p<0,001) et le statut professionnel (p = 0,001), avaient une association significative avec le niveau de connaissance des IST. Cette étude a également identifié le faible niveau d'éducation [AOR: 0,04 (IC 95%: 0,01 - 0,35)] et le chômage [AOR: 21,97 (IC 95%: 1,57 - 306,65)] comme facteurs prédictifs statistiquement significatifs d'un faible niveau de connaissance des IST chez les interviewées. ALTAR SEBAGAI TEMPAT TERJADINYA PERISTIWA KESELAMATAN: TINJAUAN TEOLOGIS MENURUT ALFONSUS MARIA DE LIGUORI
ABSTRACT:This article is a study to find the theological meaning of altar according to Saint Alphonsus Maria de Liguori. The author is interested in examining one of the peculiarities of Alphonsus' theology, namely the altar. The main focus of this writing is to find the theological meaning of the altar according to Alphonsus. The method used is a literature study. The main source of this research is the theological reflections generated from the writings of Alphonsus. The purpose of this article has two purposes. First, helping the Catholic people to experience the Eucharist more deeply when it is set with Alphonsus' understanding of the altar. Second, through this research, the readers can understand and take inspiration from the meaning of the altar in their daily lives.The theological meaning of the altar according to Alphonsus is the altar as an act of God's love, the altar as God's gift to humans, the altar as a symbol of the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ and the altar as a symbol of the unity of God and man.ABSTRAKArtikel ini merupakan kajian untuk menemukan makna teologis altar menurut Santo Alfonsus Maria de Liguori. Penulis tertarik untuk mengkaji salah satu kekhasan teologi Alfonsus, yaitu altar. Fokus utama tulisan ini adalah menemukan makna teologis altar menurut Alfonsus. Metode yang digunakan adalah studi kepustakaan. Sumber utama penelitian ini adalah refleksi teologis yang dihasilkan dari tulisan-tulisan Alfonsus. Artikel ini memiliki dua tujuan. Pertama, membantu umat Katolik untuk mengalami Ekaristi lebih mendalam ketika ditatapkan dengan pemahaman Alfonsus tentang altar. Kedua, melalui penelitian ini, pembaca dapat memahami dan mengambil inspirasi dari makna altar dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Makna teologis altar menurut Alfonsus adalah altar sebagai tindakan cinta Allah, altar sebagai pemberian diri Allah kepada manusia, altar sebagai lambang kurban penebusan Yesus Kristus dan altar sebagai lambang kesatuan Allah dan manusia
