    Variations on the Author

    No full text
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Infrastructure for Poor People : Public Policy for Private Provision

    No full text
The chapters in this book examine the data on infrastructure and the poor in developing countries and consider how policies centered on private provision can address their needs. Many of the chapters focus on the extent to which the poor have access to infrastructure services of reasonable quality, for example, to water that is safe to drink, to a reliable source of electricity, and to a nearby telephone. Access to such services is, of course, not the only infrastructure issue that matters to the poor; the poor who already have access to modern services care, for instance, about the price and reliability of those services. However, in most developing countries access is the key issue. In these countries most of the poor have no access to standard infrastructure services provided by utilities. Instead they often pay high prices for lower-quality substitutes: they might buy water by the bucket from a private vendor and use candles instead of electricity for lighting. They would rarely make a telephone call. The lack of ready access to good basic infrastructure services can directly reduce the well-being of the poor

Calculating centre of pressure from multiple force plates for kinetic analysis of sprint running

    No full text
Force plates are relatively small compared to athletes’ step lengths during sprint running. A large number of trials are subsequently rejected when collecting force plate data, which could be reduced by using multiple force plates. The aim of this study was to determine the suitability of foot contacts occurring across the boundaries of two force plates for use in inverse dynamics analyses. Centre of pressure data for a loaded wheel rolling across two force plates were compared to known positions of the wheel measured using an automated motion analysis system. A mean difference of 0.0027 [±0.0024] m was found between centre of pressure location and the measured wheel position as the wheel crossed the boundary between plates. The centre of pressure error resulted in joint power errors ranging from 0.27% to 1.47% for the ankle, knee and hip

Assistant Professor Timothy Meyer served as a contributing author for the United Nations Industrial Development Organization\u27s report titled Networks for Prosperity: Connecting Development Knowledge Beyond 2015. The document, which was released during November, analyzes the nexus between the global connectedness of a country and its economic success, sustainability and government effectiveness. Meyer was one of only approximately 20 academic and practical experts from around the world selected to serve as a contributor after a global call for proposals. Learn more View the full repor

Five minutes with Timothy Gowers: “academics can publish journals of the highest quality without a commercial entity”

Fields Medal-winning Cambridge mathematician Sir Timothy Gowers and a team of colleagues have recently launched a new editor-owned Open Access (OA) journal for mathematics. Discrete Analysis is an arXiv overlay journal, which means articles are submitted and hosted via the preprint server arXiv first. The journal coordinates peer-review and publishes via Scholastica with no cost to reader or author. Gowers reflects here on his vision for the future of editor-owned journals
