    Assessment of fnirs signal processing pipelines: Towards clinical applications

    Featured Application: In neurodegenerative diseases and neurorehabilitation, follow-up requires instrumental evidence besides clinical cognitive and motor scores. fMRI is frequently not suitable, either because patients are not eligible for an MRI or because it is prone to motion artifacts. The fNIRS technique attenuates these limitations since brain activations can be measured in a more versatile experimental setting, even if restricted to cortical activity. Therefore, the roadmap towards full clinical acceptance of fNIRS aims to provide an additional and more flexible solution to fMRI when not available or feasible, but it needs standard signal processing and protocols. This study provides comparisons of alternative processing methods in the above applicative perspective. Abstract: Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) captures activations and inhibitions of cortical areas and implements a viable approach to neuromonitoring in clinical research. Compared to more advanced methods, continuous wave fNIRS (CW-fNIRS) is currently used in clinics for its simplicity in mapping the whole sub-cranial cortex. Conversely, it often lacks hardware reduction of confounding factors, stressing the importance of a correct signal processing. The proposed pipeline includes movement artifact reduction (MAR), bandpass filtering (BPF), and principal component analysis (PCA). Eight MAR algorithms were compared among 23 young adult volunteers under motor-grasping task. Single-subject examples are shown followed by the percentage in energy reduction (ERD%) statistics by single steps and cumulative values. The block average of the hemodynamic response function was compared with generalized linear model fitting. Maps of significant activation/inhibition were illustrated. The mean ERD% of pre-processed signals concerning the initial raw signal energy reached 4%. A tested multichannel MAR variant showed overcorrection on 4-fold more expansive windows. All of the MAR algorithms found similar activations in the contra-lateral motor area. In conclusion, single channel MAR algorithms are suggested followed by BPF and PCA. The importance of whole cortex mapping for fNIRS integration in clinical applications was also confirmed by our results

    A Systematic Review of Cerebral Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy in Chronic Neurological Diseases—Actual Applications and Future Perspectives

    Background: The management of people affected by age-related neurological disorders requires the adoption of targeted and cost-effective interventions to cope with chronicity. Therapy adaptation and rehabilitation represent major targets requiring long-term follow-up of neurodegeneration or, conversely, the promotion of neuroplasticity mechanisms. However, affordable and reliable neurophysiological correlates of cerebral activity to be used throughout treatment stages are often lacking. The aim of this systematic review is to highlight actual applications of functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) as a versatile optical neuroimaging technology for investigating cortical hemodynamic activity in the most common chronic neurological conditions. Methods: We reviewed studies investigating fNIRS applications in Parkinson’s Disease (PD), Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) and Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) as those focusing on motor and cognitive impairment in ageing and Multiple Sclerosis (MS) as the most common chronic neurological disease in young adults. The literature search was conducted on NCBI PubMed and Web of Science databases by PRISMA guidelines. Results: We identified a total of 63 peer-reviewed articles. The AD spectrum is the most investigated pathology with 40 articles ranging from the traditional monitoring of tissue oxygenation to the analysis of functional resting-state conditions or cognitive functions by means of memory and verbal fluency tasks. Conversely, applications in PD (12 articles) and MS (11 articles) are mainly focused on the characterization of motor functions and their association with dual-task conditions. The most investigated cortical area is the prefrontal cortex, since reported to play an important role in age-related compensatory mechanism and neurofunctional changes associated to these chronic neurological conditions. Interestingly, only 9 articles applied a longitudinal approach. Conclusion: The results indicate that fNIRS is mainly employed for the cross-sectional characterization of the clinical phenotypes of these pathologies, whereas data on its utility for longitudinal monitoring as surrogate biomarkers of disease progression and rehabilitation effects are promising but still lacking

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Attachment representation, mentalization and cognitive emotion regulation strategies at school

    The present work investigates the link between attachment relationships, mentalization, and emotional regulation in 10-year-olds children. The aim is to verify if children-teacher attachment relationship could influence children's mentalization style and cognitive/emotional regulation strategies. For this purpose, 110 children were tested with the Separation Anxiety Test-School Version, the Mentalizing task and the kids' version of the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Question-naire. The results show that Self-Reliance component of the attachment representation with teacher predicts both the negative scale of mentalization and the propensity to use the emotional regulation strategy of "Positive Refocusing". Likewise, the Avoidance scale and the Total scale of the Separation Anxiety Test-School Version also influence the use of the cognitive emotion regulation strategy "Putting into Perspective" and of "Positive Refocusing," respectively. Results are discussed within the theoretical framework of multiple attachment theory, confirming the hypothesis that affective relationships with professional caregivers-namely school teachers-play an important role in constructing self-representation and the abilities to regulate emotions in stressful situations

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
