Reverse control of biological networks to restore phenotype landscapes

    No full text
Biological systems consist of genetic elements and their regulatory interactions, forming networks that maintain life. However, accumulated alterations such as DNA damage can distort biological behavior, leading to undesirable responses to stimulus. This raises the question of whether we can restore their nominal stimulus-response relationships. Current control approaches tend to enforce a single desired response rather than restore the proper capacity for variable responses to different stimulus. Here, we present an algebraic reverse control (ARC) framework for reversion of altered biological networks. ARC leverages matrix operations to quantify the phenotype landscape of the altered network and identifies reverse control targets for recovering the phenotype landscape of a nominal network. ARC is scalable to large Boolean networks and identifies effective control targets to restore biological behavior.

Sonochemical synthesis of Pt-deposited SiO2 nanocomposite and its catalytic application for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell under low-humidity conditions

    No full text
The direct deposition of platinum (Pt) nanoparticles on the surface of SiO2 without surface modification was attempted by irradiating ultrasound. This method enabled the formation of Pt nanoparticles with a narrow-sized distribution. The nanocomposites were blended with conducting carbon and applied as an anode catalyst for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell. With various anode relative humidity, the membrane fabricated with the catalyst exhibited tolerance toward water-deficient condition showing sustainable performance, while the membrane with commercial catalyst degraded sharply. This was attributed to the SiO2's water-uptake ability, which retained the hydration level in the membrane under low humidity. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

Hyun Jaemyeong’s Opera Chunhyang-Jeon: Ancient Traditions and Western Perspectives

abstract: ABSTRACT Korea’s first opera Chunhyang Jeon was composed by Jaemyeong Hyun in 1948. Until that time, most Korean vocal music was sung by a few native traditional artists. Inspired by their work, composer Hyun combined elements from the ancient Pansori (epic poetic forms presented by a solo singer with drum) and Western music techniques to create his opera. Hyun also used the more vernacular Hangeul (Korean alphabet) for his libretto rather than the Chinese usually heard in Korean theatrical presentations. It might be noted that in that same year (1948), the first Western opera: Verdi’s La Traviata was performed in Seoul. This study concerns the bringing together of Korean traditional idioms (in Pansori) and Western musical ideas (harmony, orchestration, etc.) to create what is now known as Chunhyang-jeon Opera. In this regard, the author will present a brief split-analysis of the older style and the more modern musical attributes of the combined style of traditional Korean music and European style opera. It is hoped that this study might provide the basis for a future opera course and guide for both disciplines. This study will also show that the Pansori and its subsequent operatic treatment has historical, social and artistic elements. Some similarities and differences of both forms were noted here with regard to cultural sensitivities. While Chunhyang-ga (older form) and Chunhyang-jeon (Hyun’s modern adaptation) have some musical similarities, the latter was not composed based on the former. Chunhyang-ga consists mainly of compound meter (6/8, 9/8, 12/8, 24/8), which is at the heart of Korean traditional music, while Chunhyang-jeon uses simple meter (2/4, 3/4, 4/4). Identical words are not often used in the two works, but their libretti are of much significance. Chunhyang-ga had been traditionally handed down with Chinese characters, whereas Chunhyang-jeon constituted its libretto with more modern Korean words which were easily understood by the audience. Pansori have been sung with traditional singing techniques, which demonstrate the flow of the melodic line found in the images of the words (as interpreted and improvised by the solo performer), while in opera, vocal music is primarily from a set of melodic and harmonic techniques.Dissertation/ThesisDoctoral Dissertation Music 201

This book offers a history of Korea from the tum of the century through the end of World War II. But it is more than that: It is an autobiographical account of Peter Hyun, who with his family, witnessed and participated in the making of modern Korean history. Hyun, born in 1907, was one of eight children who lived and went to school under Japanese rule. In 1919 he witnessed a massive demonstration in which thousands of Koreans shouted MAN SEI! -- Long Live Korea -- and watched as Japanese police and military killed countless demonstrators, hence the title of this book. The author\u27s father, the Rev. Soon Hyun, spent his career serving the Methodist church and leading the movement for Korean independence

High-Speed and Low-Temperature Atmospheric Photo-Annealing of Large-Area Solution-Processed IGZO Thin-Film Transistors by Using Programmable Pulsed Operation of Xenon Flash Lamp

    No full text
An efficient photo-annealing approach for high-performance solution-processed metal-oxide thin film transistors (TFTs) was demonstrated by using programmable pulse operation of xenon flash lamp. The flash lamp annealing (FLA) process could offer not only low-temperature (≈100° C) processing but also ultra-fast annealing speed of the order of seconds under air ambient conditions. Solution-processed amorphous indium-gallium-zinc-oxide (α-IGZO) TFTs implemented by the FLA process typically exhibited much improved electrical performance such as saturation mobility of >10.8 cm2V−11s−1, ION/IOPP of >108, and subthreshold slope of as steep as 0.24 V/dec. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis of a-IGZO films indicates that the FLA can provide sufficient activation energy for rapid formation of solid a-IGZO bonds within 30 s. The high-quality metal-oxide films achieved by an atmospheric and low temperature FLA method may represent a significant advance for scalable fabrication of flexible and printed metal-oxide electronics. © 2019, The Korean Physical Society.1

Allowing Innovative Stem Cell-Based Therapies outside of Clinical Trials: Ethical and Policy Challenges

    No full text
Armed with expanded federal funding for human embryonic stem cell research and new methods for deriving pluripotent stem cells, stem cell researchers in the U.S. are poised to proceed with unprecedented speed toward the development of new clinical therapies. Staring into the new dawn of regenerative medicine, many observers may assume that the only responsible route to the clinic, both scientifically and ethically, is through FDA-approved clinical trials processes. Conventional wisdom dictates that, like pharmaceutical drugs and the use of biological therapeutics, stem cell-based therapies will have to pass through a series of controlled studies — initially to assess safety and toxicity, then efficacy and comparative efficacy — before they can be justifiably administered to patients outside a clinical trials context.</jats:p

The bioethics of stem cell research and therapy

    No full text
Discussion of the bioethics of human stem cell research has transitioned from controversies over the source of human embryonic stem cells to concerns about the ethical use of stem cells in basic and clinical research. Key areas in this evolving ethical discourse include the derivation and use of other human embryonic stem cell-like stem cells that have the capacity to differentiate into all types of human tissue and the use of all types of stem cells in clinical research. Each of these issues is discussed as I summarize the past, present, and future bioethical issues in stem cell research.http://dx.doi.org/10.1172/JCI4043
