On Mishima Yukio's Modern Noh Play “Yuya“

    No full text
pdfLike some other modern Noh plays by Mishima,“Yuya” (1959) may be evaluated as an attempt“at a kind of poetic drama” 1) and “at a marriage between the drama of ideas and the poetic drama.“ 2) It is also important to note that it was an adaptation of a typical Noh play of yūgen-gentle splendour and graceful and subtle beauty. The Kabuki dance play “Yuya”, which Mishima wrote in 1955 for Nakamura Utaemon, helps us to see how he interpreted the original Noh. We may also note there that “the flower” the main theme of the play, was successfully represented and the feelings of the play skilfully created. Some vulgar elements were introduced into his modern Noh play, but it was still “the flower“ that the author intended to create by “modernizing”the purple passages of the original. The heroine’s words and action, replacing music, dancing and stage-setting of the classical plays, are there to show the movement of her mind and emotion. When the critical climax arrives, however, she is required to act almost like a classical Noh actor in the “iguse”sc ene, characteristically paradoxical feature that the least movement is the most powerful expression. It is not an easy play to perform.conference pape

Investigation of demersal fish using Autonomous Underwater Vehicle - Kichiji Rockfish,Sebastrobus macrochir (Günther,1877),surveys and challenges

This study examines the survey of demersal fish resources using Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) equipped with cameras. We have surveyed Kichiji Rockfish (Sebastolobus macrochir) and analyzed multi-year field data collected by the AUV Tuna-Sand in the Sea of Okhotsk (mean depth 600m) between 2013 and 2015. More than18,800 strobe-illuminated images covering 4.7 ha along a total 26.5 km transect were analyzed to determine the distribution of individuals and their sizes at different time periods, and to generate biomass estimates. The results were validated using trawl data, and showed good agreement. The major advantages of the introduction of AUVs are 1) it provides high resolution information on the relative position of individuals based on accurate AUV location data,2) it has significantly less environmental impact,3) it allows for high repeatability that conventional trawl surveys. The results demonstrate that the natural sparsity of the Kichiji distribution is an important factor in survey track-line design and data analysis. Consequently, this paper recommends best practices for reliable resource estimatio

Development of the Autonomous Core Sampling System for AUV

    No full text
In this research, authors developed a prototype of an automatic core sampling device for realizing the full autonomous core sampling by AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle). A hovering AUV "TS2"(Tuna-Sand2) was equipped with the ACSS (Autonomous Core Sampling System) developed by authors, and a core sampling test was conducted in an actual sea area. In the core sampling test, Authors succeeded in core sampling with a thickness of 10[cm]. </p

A laminaribiose-hydrolyzing enzyme, AkLab, from the common sea hare Aplysia kurodai and its transglycosylation activity

Endo-beta-1,3-glucanases (laminarinase, EC 3.2.1.6) from marine molluscs specifically degrades laminarin from brown algae producing laminaribiose and glucose, but hardly degrades laminaribiose. For the complete depolymerization of laminarin, other enzymes that can hydrolyze laminaribiose appear to be necessary. In the present study, we successfully isolated a laminaribiose-hydrolyzing enzyme from the digestive fluid of a marine gastropod Aplysia kurodai by ammonium sulfate fractionation followed by conventional column chromatographies. This enzyme, AkLab, named after the scientific name of this animal and substrate specificity toward laminaribiose, shows an approximate molecular mass of 110 kDa on SDS-PAGE, and optimum pH and temperature at around pH 5.5 and 50 degrees C, respectively. AkLab rapidly hydrolyzes laminaribiose and p-nitrophenyl-beta-D-glucoside, and slowly cellobiose, gentiobiose and lactose, but not sucrose and maltose. AkLab shows high transglycosylation activity and can produce a series of laminarioligosaccharides larger than laminaritetraose from laminaribiose (a donor substrate) and laminaritriose (an acceptor substrate). This enzyme is suggested to be a member of glycosyl hydrolase family 1 by the analysis of partial amino-acid sequences. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved

This is the accepted version of the following article: Izumi S., Inoue K., Nitta Y., et al. 3,11-Diaminodibenzo[a,j]phenazine: Synthesis, Properties, and Applications to Tröger's Base-Forming Ladder Polymerization. Chemistry - A European Journal 29, e202202702 (2023), which has been published in final form at https://doi.org/10.1002/chem.202202702. This article may be used for non-commercialpurposes in accordance with the Wiley Self-ArchivingPolicy. [https://authorservices.wiley.com/author-resources/Journal-Authors/licensing/self-archiving.html]A new class of diamino-substituted π-extended phenazine compound was synthesized, and its photophysical properties were investigated. The U-shaped diaminophenazine displayed photoluminescence in solution with moderate quantum yield. The diamino aromatic compound was found applicable to the poly-condensation with formaldehyde to form Tröger's base ladder polymer. The obtained microporous ladder polymer features high CO2 adsorption selectivity against N2, most likely due to the presence of basic nitrogen atoms in the phenazine rings

Big dragon, little dragons : China's challenge to the machinery exports of southeast Asia

    No full text
This paper investigates the extent of China's export boom in machinery and analyzes trade in components and finished machinery between China and Southeast Asia. China has increased its world market share in machinery exports. The median relative unit value of its finished machinery exports has also risen. Yet the author finds no evidence that China's expansion in the world machinery market has squeezed the market shares of Southeast Asian machinery exports. Instead, components made by Southeast Asian countries are increasing in unit value and gaining market share in China.Markets and Market Access,Economic Theory&Research,Free Trade,General Manufacturing,Debt Markets
