Threshold improvement in uniformly lying helix cholesteric liquid crystal laser using auxiliary π-conjugated polymer active layer

We place a p-conjugated polymer active layer beneath the ChLC layer to provide auxiliary gain, and demonstrate an improvement in the lasing threshold by a factor of 2.3. We also perform finite difference time domain calculations coupled with rate equations for a four-level system, and clarify the effect of the additional active layer on both the photonic density of states and the inversion population density. Although the addition of an extra layer lowers the photonic density of states, the gain provided by the auxiliary layer is sufficient to overcome the losses and decrease the lasing threshold. Our concept is useful for obtaining high-performance ChLC lasers

Stock ownership and corporate performance in Japan: Corporate governance by institutional investors
Faced with an aging population and a low fertility rate, Japan finds it increasingly essential to shift diminishing national savings into productive investment in order to preserve the dynamism of its economy. Stock investment by institutional investors is important for corporate financing, and shareholder involvement in governance influences corporate growth. Using panel data for Japan's listed companies and foreign investors' votes on shareholder proposals, this paper demonstrates: (1) an increase in stock ownership by foreign investors' had a positive effect on productivity growth, but it has not recently improved other corporate performance indices, and (2) foreign investors' strong attitudes towards voting had a positive effect on productivity growth. This paper concludes that external stakeholders' active, qualitative involvement in corporate governance and their quantitative involvement by increasing stock ownership are key to improving corporate growth.

International audienceJean-Cyrille Hierso is full professor of Chemistry since 2009, heading the group of ‘Organometallic Chemistry and Catalysis’ at the Institute of Molecular Chemistry at the University of Bourgogne Franche-Comté (UBFC). He has interest in the fields of organometallic chemistry, ligand design, homo- and heterogeneous catalysis, chemical physics, and material sciences. In 2011 he was awarded the National Prize for Coordination Chemistry from the French Chemical Society (SCF), and at the end of 2012 he was elected a junior Member of the French Professors Academy ‘Institut Universitaire de France’ (IUF).Yasuhiro Uozumi is a full professor at the Institute for Molecular Science (IMS) in Okazaki, Japan since 2000, and has also been appointed as a research team leader at RIKEN in Wako, Japan. He is interested in the fields of organic synthesis, organometallic chemistry, transition metal catalysis, and green chemistry. He was awarded The Chemical Society of Japan (CSJ) Award for Creative Work (2007), the Ministerial Award for Green Sustainable Chemistry (2007), the Inoue Prize (2010), and The Ministerial Commendation for Science and Technology (2014)
A simulation model for amphiphilic molecules in a mesoscale solvent
AbstractWe present a stochastic rotation dynamics model of amphiphilic molecules. Vesicle formation of amphiphilic molecules in a thermal fluctuating fluid is demonstrated in this paper. In the model, the interaction of amphiphilic molecules is represented by Lennard–Jones potentials, and stochastic rotation dynamics [T. Ihle, D.M. Kroll, Stochastic rotation dynamics: A Galilean-invariant mesoscopic model for fluid flow, Phys. Rev. E 63 (2001) 020201(R)] of mesoscopic particles has been adopted to reproduce the correct hydrodynamics of solvent fluids at the macroscopic scale. The amphiphilic molecules and the solvent particles interact via Boltzmann sampling of a color potential as suggested in a previous paper [Y. Inoue, Y. Chen, H. Ohashi, A mesoscopic simulation model for immiscible multiphase fluids, J. Comput. Phys. 201 (2004) 191] to reproduce a phase separation between hydrophobic atoms and solvent fluids
Effects of Participatory and Physical Life Goals in a Preventive Care Program for Frail Community-Dwelling Older People: A Retrospective Cohort Study

Life goals related to activities and participation had a more positive effect on frail older people’s health and quality of life than did life goals related to physical function and structure. The setting of meaningful goals may help to improve the effectiveness of preventive care programs.
