Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
A escuta e a cultura de si: a subjetivação da verdade
Get PDFThis article intends to investigate, starting from the notion of self-care, studied by Michel Foucault in his course of 1982, the relationship that the listening establishes with the truth in the Greek-Roman Antiquity. It is about perceiving three movements in that sense. The first of them is the instauration of a new pedagogic model, in substitution to the proposed in the Socratic-platonic tradition. The listening culture is born and the dialogue disappears. The second movement is related to such listening technique applied to a self governing. The subject of the self care is more of straight action, than of true knowledge. And finally, a third movement analyzes the relationship that the listening establishes with the truth, in the governing on the other ones. For the pagan philosophy what is put in check is the establishment of a pedagogic model between master and disciple, in a horizontality relationship, in which the master cares for his disciple's autonomy.Este artigo pretende investigar, a partir da noção de cuidado de si, estudado por Michel Foucault em seu curso de 1982, a relação que a escuta estabelece com a verdade na Antiguidade greco-romana. Trata-se de perceber nesse sentido três movimentos. O primeiro deles é a instauração de um novo modelo pedagógico, em substituição ao proposto na tradição socrático-platônica. Nasce a cultura da escuta e desaparece o diálogo. O segundo movimento diz respeito a essa técnica da escuta aplicada a um governo sobre si mesmo. O sujeito do cuidado de si é mais de ação reta, que de conhecimentos verdadeiros. E por último, um terceiro movimento analisa a relação que a escuta estabelece com a verdade, no governo sobre os outros. No full textThe purpose of this article is to show how Brother Francisco Rivat, the first Superior General of the Marist Brothers Congregation, despite a certain image of spiritual and moral ingenuity, developed a sophisticated model of spiritual life, which, grounded in a solid “mystical-ascetical” tradition of exercises and prac-tices of one’s constitution, especially reading and writing, has become an art of living”, encompassing its entire existence. His more than five thousand written pages, distributed in twenty-two carnets, containing from spiritual notes to beer recipes, reveal a personality that, while growing in the fame of sanctity, was fra-gile in facing the challenge of advancing work that grew dramatically. If recent research has revealed that we can have him, based on his mystic texts, along-side João da Cruz and Tereza D’Avila, the novelty may be, when looking at his way of life, in being able to put him beside by Epicurus, Seneh, Marco Aurelio, among othersO objetivo deste artigo é mostrar como o Irmão Francisco Rivat, primeiro superior geral da Congregação dos Irmãos Maristas, a despeito de certa imagem de ingenuidade espiritual e moral, desenvolveu um sofisticado modelo de vida espiritual, que, ancorado numa sólida tradição “místico-ascética” de exercícios e práticas de constituição de si mesmo, em especial a leitura e a escrita, transformou-se numa “arte de viver”, abarcando toda a sua existência. E entre o ignorante de seu passado e o sabedor em demasia, capaz de encontrar com sua inteligência as pistas do criminoso que, ironicamente, levam para si mesmo, vemos como, desde então, concebe-se uma nova forma do fazer político. A derrocada de Édipo, rei amado e querido por seu povo, assinala a dura crítica à tirania, que, desviando-se dos preceitos divinos, torna-se um sistema inapto de governo. Desaparece, dessa forma, o saber-poder ligado às transgressões, às lutas e aos excessos, para nascer um saber-poder ligado à pureza. A compreensão de Michel Foucault acerca de Édipo, por isso, determina o limiar de uma ruptura: do antigo modelo de poder que se fundamenta no governante que detém a mântica e a justiça e que endireita a cidade para um novo modelo, no qual o soberano, do cume de sua autocracia, representa a figura de rompimento entre o saber e a política
