Contrasting population-level responses to Pleistocene climatic oscillations in an alpine bat revealed by complete mitochondrial genomes and evolutionary history inference

    No full text
Aim: We used an integrative approach to reconstruct the evolutionary history of the alpine long-eared bat, Plecotus macrobullaris, to test whether the variable effects of Pleistocene climatic oscillations across geographical regions led to contrasting population-level demographic histories within a single species.Location: The Western Palaearctic. Methods: We sequenced the complete mitochondrial genomes of 57 individuals from across the distribution of the species. The analysis integrated ecological niche modelling (ENM), approximate Bayesian computation (ABC), measures of genetic diversity and Bayesian phylogenetic methods. Results: We identified two deep lineages: a western lineage, restricted to the Pyrenees and the Alps, and an eastern lineage, which expanded across the mountain ranges east of the Dinarides (Croatia). ENM projections of past conditions predicted that climatic suitability was reduced during cold stages in the areas inhabited by the western lineage, while the opposite trend was observed in the mountains inhabited by the eastern lineage. The palaeodemographic scenario that best fitted our data is consistent with the western lineage population size having shrunk repeatedly because of the extensive glaciation events that occurred in the Alps and Pyrenees during the Pleistocene. In contrast, the eastern lineage maintained a constant population size as is consistent with more limited glaciation in the mountains of south-eastern Europe and the Middle East.Main conclusions: This study shows that the demographic response of populations to Pleistocene climatic oscillations depended on their geographical location, offering an example of population-level variations in the effects and long-term consequences of climate change

In 2022, we carried out the work on the next systematization and updating of information regarding the herbarium collections in Russia. The table shows the number of herbaria in various subjects of the Russian Federation and the number of samples in them as of January 2023. The subjects of the Russian Federation are given according to the text of the Constitution of the Russian Federation (2022). The data are ranked by the volume of the herbarium funds. The total number of herbaria in 89 subjects of the Russian Federation is 293, of which 144 herbaria have international indices; the total herbarium fund includes 21.34 million specimens. The distribution of collections by administrative regions is given on a separate sheet of the file. We also note that a significant part of the collections is located in universities - 124 herbariums, however, only 32.8% of all herbarium funds are located here. At the same time, 2/3 of the herbarium fund is located in the herbaria of the research institutes - 62.7%. In 69 herbariums of the reserves, 2.2% of herbarium sheets are concentrated, in 39 museums - 1.8%, in three private collections - 0.4%.The data presented is not final. "Gardaz vostre garnir" : Garin Lo Brun's

    No full text
In this note, the author demonstrates that, although the ensenhamen of Garin lo Brun serves as a metrical and formal model for the anonymous obscene cobla "De bona domna voill," it is also parodied by another cobla in the same anthology of parodic and scatological coblas contained in songbook G. While scholars have studied coblas of this anthology individually, there is much that can be learned about the cultural and literary importance of this small grouping of texts when they are studied as a whole. While it is impossible to prove common authorship for all the cobla-texts of the anthology, the many shared features suggest a consolidated practice of parody of canonical troubadour models

Semiotics of the city in the sketches by N. Garin-Mikhailovsky «In the hustle and bustle of the provincial life»

    No full text
This article attempts to analyze the semiotics of the urban space depicted by N. Garin-Mikhailovsky in In the hustle and bustle of the provincial life sketches. For this purpose, the main city locations, described by the author, are identified - the noble assembly, the governor's house, the apartments of the photographer and Abramson, Khlebnaya Square and some others. On the basis of the analysis, it is concluded that, when sketching a portrait of the city, Garin depicts it in almost the entire geographical extent - from the southwest to its northeastern outskirts; the intention to show the whole Samara in terms of the geographical extent is accompanied with a similar intention to show different social levels of the city life; urban locations are not depicted as static, remote and isolated objects, but as connected by a wide variety of connections and relationships. All this together allows us to consider the city, depicted in N. Garin-Mikhailovskys sketches, as a semiotic structure, a complex meaning, and decoding is the only way to get closer to a real understanding of the formula in the title of the cycle In the hustle and bustle of the provincial life

The study of the media culture, the virtual world requires human knowledge and skills analysis of media texts of different levels of complexity. The article explains the technique of analysis of media texts detective-fiction genre as an example of the screen adaptations of A.N.Tolstoy (1883-1945) novel "The Hyperboloid of Engineer Garin" (1927) in the context of media education. The author believes that the technology fits into the basic range of media education goals of higher education (especially in the training of future cultural studies, art historians, sociologists, linguists, psychologists, teachers)

Abstract machines: Samuel Beckett and philosophy after Deleuze and Guattari

    No full text
What can philosophy bring to the reading of Beckett? Combining intertextual analysis with a ‘schizoanalytic genealogy’ derived from the authors of L’Anti-Œdipe, Garin Dowd’s Abstract Machines: Samuel Beckett and Philosophy after Deleuze and Guattari offers an innovative response to this much debated question. The author focuses on zones of encounter and thresholds of engagement between Beckett’s writing and a range of philosophers (among them Spinoza, Leibniz and Kant) and philosophical concepts. Beckett’s writing impacts in a variety of ways on Deleuze and Guattari’s thought, and, in particular, resonates with Deleuze’s contributions to the history of philosophy (in books such as Le Pli: Leibniz et le baroque), and his ‘critical and clinical’ approach to literature. Furthermore, the books co-written with Guattari, concerned as they are with the ‘molecularization’ of the discipline of philosophy in the name of ‘thinking otherwise’, reveal themselves in a new light when explored in conjunction with Beckett’s œuvre. With its arresting perspectives on a wide range of Beckett’s works, Abstract Machines will appeal to academics and postgraduate students interested in the philosophical aspects of his writing. Its engagement with alternative contributions to the question of Beckett and philosophy, including that of Alain Badiou, renders it a timely and provocative intervention in contemporary debates on the relationship between literature and philosophy, both within the field of Beckett studies and beyond

In the special issue of the review devoted to Garin and the twentieth century, this paper considers the methodological reflections by Eugenio Garin about the relation between philosophy and history of philosophy, with particular attention to the book “La filosofia come sapere storico” (1959), that discusses the traditional hegelian categories. The author points out the links connecting the historical methodology of Garin both with his practice as historian of philosophy (widely known for his studies on Renaissance philosophy), and with his conception developed face to idealistic and marxistic Italian tradition from Gentile and Croce to Gramsci. The article, which is part of the special issue of the "Journal critic of Italian philosophy" dedicated to "Garin and the Twentieth Century", takes into account the methodological reflections of Garin on the relationship between philosophy and history of philosophy, particularly with regard to the volume " Philosophy as historical knowledge "(1959), which discusses the Hegelian categories that have inspired the traditional way of doing history of philosophy. The foraging ecology of the mountain long-eared bat Plecotus macrobullaris revealed with DNA mini-barcodes.

Molecular analysis of diet overcomes the considerable limitations of traditional techniques for identifying prey remains in bat faeces. We collected faeces from individual Mountain Long-eared Bats Plecotus macrobullaris trapped using mist nets during the summers of 2009 and 2010 in the Pyrenees. We analysed their diet using DNA mini-barcodes to identify prey species. In addition, we inferred some basic features of the bat's foraging ecology that had not yet been addressed. P. macrobullaris fed almost exclusively on moths (97.8%). As prey we detected one dipteran genus (Tipulidae) and 29 moth taxa: 28 were identified at species level (23 Noctuidae, 1 Crambidae, 1 Geometridae, 1 Pyralidae, 1 Sphingidae, 1 Tortricidae), and one at genus level (Rhyacia sp., Noctuidae). Known ecological information about the prey species allowed us to determine that bats had foraged at elevations between 1,500 and 2,500 m amsl (above mean sea level), mostly in subalpine meadows, followed by other open habitats such as orophilous grasslands and alpine meadows. No forest prey species were identified in the diet. As 96.4% of identified prey species were tympanate moths and no evidence of gleaning behaviour was revealed, we suggest P. macrobullaris probably forages by aerial hawking using faint echolocation pulses to avoid detection by hearing moths. As we could identify 87.8% of the analysed sequences (64.1% of the MOTUs, Molecular Operational Taxonomic Units) at species level, we conclude that DNA mini-barcodes are a very useful tool to analyse the diet of moth-specialist bats
