    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    This writing discusses the consept of tauhid in building science incorporated as part of al-Faruqi’s construction of Islamic studies. As a contemporary Muslim thinker, al-Faruqi maintains that tauhid is a substantial point in human’s character building in various dimensions. As such, this gives rise to producing the dynamics of tauhid meanings in all aspects of life. This kind of tauhid essence has to be persued at the ontological and epistemological conceptions. In order to explore such subtance, historical descriptive analysis approach is used so that the formulation of tauhid epistemology of al Faruqi could be known in detail throw light into the tauhid meanings in this life. The writer found that al-Faruqi’s scientific paradigm at the level of applying tauhid be demonstrated in the concept of science, hoping that it will enlighten human life based on the principles of Islamic creed or tauhid

    Integrated Boarding Systems University: An Effective Formula for Creating a Good Man

    This article aims to explain the educational structure at UNIDA Gontor as a Boarding system University. This system is considered both appropriate and effective as a solution to the problem of the Westernization of Islamic education and as an effort to realize the Islamization of knowledge. This study employs a qualitative research design. To address the subject matter, the researcher uses a philosophical approach and an analytical descriptive method. The study concludes that the integration of the university and pesantren educational systems expands the essence and scope of the curriculum. The essence of the curriculum encompasses not only academic education with a range of courses but also non-academic education shaped by the pesantren system, designed beyond classroom activities. Furthermore, the integration of these two curricula in practice involves various activities, including formal, informal, and non-formal education, all of which are structured to instill an Islamic worldview. This holistic system is envisioned as a means of revivalism and the reformulation of a unique new system for the resurgence of Islamic universities, serving as a medium for the emergence of the insÄn al-kÄmil (the complete human), in alignment with the true objectives of Islamic education

    Keagresifan proyek modernisme dalam penekanan individualisme yang didorong oleh ilmu pengetahuan dan teknologi telah mematahkan mitos kesakralan alam raya. Di samping itu maraknya adopsi fundamentalisme dan ekstrimisme para sufi menjadikan mayoritas umat Islam mengalami kemunduran dan keterbelakangan. Hal tersebut mendorong Fazlur Rahman untuk memunculkan neo- sufisme sebagai konsep baru yang cenderung memperbaiki tingkah laku sufi klasik yang menyimpang dan menanamkan kembali sikap positif terhadap dunia. Berangkat dari wacana di atas, dan kekhawatiran peneliti akan keadaan Islam di masa depan maka dalam skripsinya peneliti berusaha untuk mengetahui pemikiran Fazlur Rahman salah seorang pemikir muslim yang kontroversional dengan menguraikan rumusan konsep neo-sufismenya yang akan dijadikan sebagai kebangkitan Islam di era global. Untuk meneliti objek kajian pemikiran Fazlur Rahman mengenai neo-sufisme peneliti menggunakan pendekatan filosofis sebagai pemecahan permasalahan yang ada. Maka dalam kajian ini peneliti menggunakan metode deskriptif yang digunakan untuk menjelaskan latar belakang pemikiran Fazlur Rahman dan kedekatannya tehadap tasawuf. Adapun metode analisis digunakan untuk melihat pemikiran Fazlur Rahman dalam merumuskan konsep neo-sufisme. Dari kajian ini peneliti menyimpulkan bahwa neo-sufisme yang dimaksud Fazlur Rahman adalah tasawuf yang telah diperbaharui dengan melucuti ciri dan kandungan asketis dan metafisiknya, dan digantikan kandungan yang tidak lain dari dalil-dalil salafi. Dalam konsepnya ia mengembangkan neo- sufisme tersebut dalam tasawuf moral dan kognitif. Di antara unsur-unsur tasawuf moral yang diperbaharuinya adalah zuhud dan 'uzlah, menurutnya dua hal tersebut bukanlah berarti meninggalkan dunia, karena konsep zuhud yang telah diajarkan oleh Al-Qur'an dan Sunnah yakni menganggap positif terhadap dunia tanpa melupakan harapannya dalam menempuh kebahagiaan di akhirat. Selain itu ia menekankan konsep ekuilibrium (tawāzun), karena menurutnya Islam memanifestasikan antara fiqh dan tasawuf. Sedangkan dalam hal dzikir, dalam pandangan neo-sufisme, dzikir dengan "nama tunggal" tidaklah dianjurkan, karena dzikir yang paling utama ialah kalimat lengkap. Dan di antara pemahaman baru yang ditekankannya dalam tasawuf kognitif adalah konsep kasyf dan ma'rifah. Dalam konsep neo- sufismenya ia menerima hal tersebut sebagai kebenaran Ilahiyah, namun ia menolak tuntutan perasaan pura-pura tak pernah bersalahnya para sufi yang berpendapat bahwa kasyf yang berada dalam porposisi menuju kemurnian moral dan hati. Dalam konsep ma'rifahnya ia menolak doktrin-doktrin monisme dan panteisme, karena menurutnya bahwa ma'rifah sufi sangat tertutup maka ma'rifah setiap orang adalah milik mereka sendiri. Selain hal tersebut muräqabah yang merupakan peninggalan sufi klasik perlu dipertahankan, karena murāqabah ini adalah salah satu sikap ihsān yakni keadaan jiwa dalam beribadah kepada Allah seakan-akan kita melihat Allah, andaikan kita tidak dapat melihat-Nya, sesungguhnya Allah melihat kita. Demikianlah penelitian ini dapat disimpulkan, namun peneliti sadar bahwa penelitian ini masih sangat jauh dari kesempurnaan dan membutuhkan kajian lebih lanjut yang akan membahas permasalahan ini dengan lebih jelas. Besar harapan peneliti atas saran dan kritiknya dan semoga penelitian ini bermanfaat bagi penulis khususnya dan para pembaca pada umumnya. Amin

    One of the main problems faced by Moslems today is the westernization of science. Where science is demoralized and deIslamized, so the science that should bring peace causes chaos in life. From the existing problems, this paper aims to provide a solution by presenting the concept of  Islamization of Knowledge in the view of Ismail Raji' al-Faruqi. In this study, researchers used qualitative research with descriptive methods of analysis. Based on existing research, as will be proven later, that Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas was the main character who inspired al-Faruqi in formulazing the idea of Islamization of Knowledge. Furthermore, as a contemporary Muslim thinker, al-Faruqi argues that the Islamization of Knowledge is a positive response to the development of modern science that tends to be secular and value-free. Interestingly, researchers found that to broaden the idea of the Islamization of Knowledge, al-Faruqi laid out the principle of tawhid as a framework of thought, methodology and way of view of Islamic life. Starting from this tauhid principle, al-Faruqi was able to formulate a work plan with five objectives and twelve steps to realize the plan. Therefore, to look at what tawhid methodology looks like as well as the framework of Islamization of Knowledge that he has formulated into an important discussion that is not biased is just passed in this study

    Tulisan ini mengkaji tentang karier wanita dalam Islam sebagai jawaban atas tantangan pemikiran kontemporer diskursus studi pemikiran feminisme dan gender. Memandang bahwa karier wanita di Barat tidak lain adalah sebuah agenda kaum feminisme untuk membebaskan dirinya dari dominasi kaum patriarki. Untuk mewujudkan agenda tersebut, kaum feminisme berusaha mewujudkan kesetaraan gender secara kuantitatif, yaitu lelaki dan wanita harus sama-sama (fifty-fifty) berperan baik di luar maupun di dalam rumah. Pengalaman seperti ini tentu bertolak belakang dengan Islam. Dalam Islam, peran seorang lelaki maupun wanita di dalam maupun di luar rumah telah diatur berdasarkan wahyu. Meskipun lelaki maupun wanita sama-sama memiliki tanggungjawab sebagai khalifah di bumi, namun mereka membawa konsekuensi yang berbeda-beda sesuai peranan dan fitrah kodratinya. Seperti yang akan dibuktikan nanti bahwa dalam dunia karier, seorang wanita tidak bisa disetarakan dengan kaum lelaki secara sama. Islam memang tidak melarang wanita dalam berkarier, kecuali dengan ketentuan dan syarat-syarat yang telah ditetapkan oleh syari’at. Bahkan pemberdayaan wanita dalam sejarah peradaban Islam telah dicontohkan oleh para Ummahat  Mukminin maupun para Shahabiyyah.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    THE INCULCATION OF ISLAMIC WORLDVIEW AT UNIDA GONTOR (A CASE STUDY ON INTEGRATED CURRICULUM OF BOARDING SYSTEM UNIVERSITY) A Dissertation

    The fundamental problem faced by the Muslim community today is the issue of knowledge centered around universities. The universities established by the majority of Muslims today are nothing more than mere replicas of the concept of Western secular universities. This research aims to analyze and articulate the cultivation of the Islamic worldview at UNIDA Gontor as an effort to realize the vision of a modern Islamic university needed by the Muslim community today, namely the Islamization of Contemporary Knowledge. This type of research is qualitative research with a case study approach. In analyzing the research object, the Researcher employs an interactive analysis model that involves three stages of data flow analysis, consisting of data condensation, data presentation, conclusion drawing, and data verification. Throughout this process, the Researcher engages various elements in managing the data, namely reading, memoing, and coding the data; describing, classifying, interpreting data, and visualizing it in narratives and tables. This research has found that the Islamic worldview, according to UNIDA Gontor, is the combination of thought (‘ilm) and belief (īmān) serving as the foundation for all actions (‘amal). In this context, actions must be based on belief, and belief must be linked to thought. While implementing its incorporation into education, UNIDA Gontor integrates academic and non-academic education through an integrated system of university and pesantren education. As an evaluation of learning related to both curricula, UNIDA Gontor not only applies the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) but also integrates it with the Cumulative Grade Point Average of Pesantren (CGPAP). Through survey and observational research, it has been proven that the inculcation of the Islamic worldview at UNIDA Gontor is reflected in all educational activities in a holistic manner. However, with the discovery of some phenomena of Sharia violations among students it reflects that not all thought (‘ilm) acquired can be elevated to belief (īmān). Not everything thought and believed transforms into Islamic actions (‘amal). This research is expected to contribute to the realization of the vision of Islamization of Contemporary Knowledge centered around universities and to inspire other researchers in addressing various Western epistemological challenges, ideas, cultures, and their influences.     Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
