A letter from Brian Tatsuo to the friends of Michi Weglyn and the NCRR members present at the Tribute to Michi meetings, in which offers a lengthy critique of the leadership of the National Coalition for Redress/Reparations (NCRR), with the exception of Frank Emi. In the letter he also refers to Weglyn as "the mother of the redress movement" and mentions that Frank Chin offered to organize a publicity plan for the event, but his help was refused.These materials are from box 73 and 74 of the Frank Chin Papers. The Frank Chin Papers contain personal and professional correspondence between Frank Chin and Michi Weglyn relating to particular projects on which either author was working as well as files related to the Day of Remembrance Tribute to Michi Weglyn

Localization of Bott-Chern classes and Hermitian residues
We develop a theory of Cech-Bott-Chern cohomology and in this context we naturally come up with the relative Bott-Chern cohomology. In fact, Bott-Chern cohomology has two relatives and they all arise from a single complex. Thus, we study these three cohomologies in a unified way and obtain a long exact sequence involving the three. We then study the localization problem of characteristic classes in the relative Bott-Chern cohomology. For this, we define the cup product and integration in our framework and we discuss local and global duality morphisms. After reviewing some materials on connections, we give a vanishing theorem relevant to our localization. With these, we prove a residue theorem for vector bundles admitting a Hermitian connection compatible with an action of the non-singular part of a singular distribution. As a typical case, we discuss the action of a distribution on the normal bundle of an invariant submanifold (the so-called Camacho-Sad action) and give a specific example
Immunoglobulin A and liver diseases
Immunoglobulin A (IgA) is a major immunoglobulin isotype in the gut and plays a role in maintenance of gut homeostasis. Secretory IgA (SIgA) has multiple functions in the gut, such as to regulate microbiota composition, to protect intestinal epithelium from pathogenic microorganisms, and to help for immune-system development. The liver is the front-line organ that receives gut-derived products through the portal vein, implying that the liver could be severely affected by a disrupted intestinal homeostasis. Indeed, some liver diseases like alcoholic liver disease are associated with an altered composition of gut microbiota and increased blood endotoxin levels. Therefore, deficiency of SIgA function appears as a significant factor for the pathogenesis of liver diseases associated with altered gut microbiome. In this review, we describe SIgA functions on the gut microbiome and discuss the role of IgA for liver diseases, especially alcoholic liver disease and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease/non-alcoholic steatohepatitis
Letter from children of Kihichi Sakamoto to Project Director [Raymond R. Best], February 14, 1944
Letter from three of his children, Tatsuo, Manabu, and Osamu Sakamoto, requests the release of their father, Kihichi Sakamoto, from the Army Stockade, for the sake of their mother's "health and mind" stating that she has been ill since their stay in Heart Mountain the previous year and has suffered a relapse upon her husband's imprisonment in the stockade; the letter states that, according to her doctor, a lack of kindness and peace of mind regarding this request for release could prove lethal to her.The Willard Schmidt collection, documents some of the administrative duties of Willard Schmidt, the Chief of Internal Security for the War Relocation Authority and the Tule Lake incarceration/segregation camp. This collection contains administrative records and photos documenting the Tule Lake camp, the largest incarceration camp with a peak population of 18,789 and with the most turbulent history. In 1943, the camp was turned into a segregation center to house "disloyal" Japanese Americans relocated from other camps based on their answers to a confusing loyalty questionnaire. The camp endured martial law from November 1943- Jan 1944 after escalating protests and unrest. The hostile environment of the camp lead to many incarcerees renouncing their American citizenship upon the end of incarceration, a process which took 14 years to reverse if they did not wish to be deported to Japan
Mechanisms of multidrug resistance caused by an Ipi1 mutation in the fungal pathogen Candida glabrata
Multidrug resistance in the pathogenic fungus Candida glabrata is a growing global threat. Here, we study mechanisms of multidrug resistance in this pathogen. Exposure of C. glabrata cells to micafungin (an echinocandin) leads to the isolation of a mutant exhibiting resistance to echinocandin and azole antifungals. The drug-resistant phenotype is due to a non-synonymous mutation (R70H) in gene IPI1, which is involved in pre-rRNA processing. Azole resistance in the ipi1R70H mutant depends on the Pdr1 transcription factor, which regulates the expression of multidrug transporters. The C. glabrata Ipi1 protein physically interacts with the ribosome-related chaperones Ssb and Ssz1, both of which bind to Pdr1. The Ipi1-Ssb/Ssz1 complex inhibits Pdr1-mediated gene expression and multidrug resistance in C. glabrata, in contrast to Saccharomyces cerevisiae where Ssz1 acts as a positive regulator of Pdr1. Anti-tumor Effects of Erlotinib via Thymidylate Synthase Down-regulation in Pancreatic Cancer Cells
Nagasaki University (長崎大学)博士(医学)Background/Aim: In pancreatic cancer, gemcitabine and EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors (EGFR-TKIs) are common chemotherapy options. Reports have shown that EGFR-TKIs suppress the expression of thymidine synthase (TS), an important enzyme for DNA biosynthesis, and increase sensitivity to gemcitabine in lung cancer. However, no such reports have been made in pancreatic cancer. Materials and Methods: Human pancreatic cancer cell lines MiaPaCa2, Panc1, and BxPc3 were used. TS mRNA and protein expression levels in the cells were analyzed after erlotinib treatment. In addition, the anti-tumor effect of TS knockdown was verified using TS siRNA, along with its synergistic effect when combined with gemcitabine. Results: TS expression was high in MiaPaCa2 and Panc1 cells and low in BxPc3 cells. After erlotinib treatment, TS mRNA and protein levels decreased markedly in MiaPaCa2 cells dose-dependently, but not in Panc1 cells. TS siRNA caused specific down-regulation of TS in MiaPaCa2 and Panc1 cells. TS down-regulation resulted in an anti-tumor effect in these cells (MiaPaCa2 42%; Panc1 38%; p<0.05), showing a synergistic effect when combined with gemcitabine.
