On Mishima Yukio's Modern Noh Play “Yuya“
pdfLike some other modern Noh plays by Mishima,“Yuya” (1959) may be evaluated as an attempt“at a kind of poetic drama” 1) and “at a marriage between the drama of ideas and the poetic drama.“ 2) It is also important to note that it was an adaptation of a typical Noh play of yūgen-gentle splendour and graceful and subtle beauty.
The Kabuki dance play “Yuya”, which Mishima wrote in 1955 for Nakamura Utaemon, helps us to see how he interpreted the original Noh. We may also note there that “the flower” the main theme of the play, was successfully represented and the feelings of the play skilfully created.
Some vulgar elements were introduced into his modern Noh play, but it was still “the flower“ that the author intended to create by “modernizing”the purple passages of the original. The heroine’s words and action, replacing music, dancing and stage-setting of the classical plays, are there to show the movement of her mind and emotion. When the critical climax arrives, however, she is required to act almost like a classical Noh actor in the “iguse”sc ene, characteristically paradoxical feature that the least movement is the most powerful expression. It is not an easy play to perform.conference pape
Ca2+ Regulates ERp57-Calnexin Complex Formation
ERp57, a member of the protein disulfide isomerase family, is a ubiquitous disulfide catalyst that functions in the oxidative folding of various clients in the mammalian endoplasmic reticulum (ER). In concert with ER lectin-like chaperones calnexin and calreticulin (CNX/CRT), ERp57 functions in virtually all folding stages from co-translation to post-translation, and thus plays a critical role in maintaining protein homeostasis, with direct implication for pathology. Here, we present mechanisms by which Ca2+ regulates the formation of the ERp57-calnexin complex. Biochemical and isothermal titration calorimetry analyses revealed that ERp57 strongly interacts with CNX via a non-covalent bond in the absence of Ca2+. The ERp57-CNX complex not only promoted the oxidative folding of human leukocyte antigen heavy chains, but also inhibited client aggregation. These results suggest that this complex performs both enzymatic and chaperoning functions under abnormal physiological conditions, such as Ca2+ depletion, to effectively guide proper oxidative protein folding. The findings shed light on the molecular mechanisms underpinning crosstalk between the chaperone network and Ca2+
Modular synthesis of oligoacetylacetones via site-selective silylation of acetylacetone derivatives
Oligoacetylacetones consisting of 3,3-disubstituted pentane-2,4-diones were synthesized through a terminal silylation and oxidative coupling protocol. Highly selective formation of mono-enol silyl ethers of 3,3-disubstituted acetylacetones was achieved using 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) as a base. Subsequent silver(i) oxide mediated coupling reactions provided tetraketones. Unique substituent dependence was found for the terminal-selective silylation of tetraketones. Finally, octaketones (tetramers of acetylacetone derivatives) with three types of monomer sequences were prepared in their discrete forms. Single crystal X-ray analysis revealed that the solid-state conformations of oligoketone chains were predominantly governed by the ketone sequence rather than substituents. However, differences in the packing structures induced by alkyl substituents led to significant differences in melting points for the structural isomers of octaketones
Big dragon, little dragons : China's challenge to the machinery exports of southeast Asia
This paper investigates the extent of China's export boom in machinery and analyzes trade in components and finished machinery between China and Southeast Asia. China has increased its world market share in machinery exports. The median relative unit value of its finished machinery exports has also risen. Yet the author finds no evidence that China's expansion in the world machinery market has squeezed the market shares of Southeast Asian machinery exports. Instead, components made by Southeast Asian countries are increasing in unit value and gaining market share in China.Markets and Market Access,Economic Theory&Research,Free Trade,General Manufacturing,Debt Markets
Good reduction criterion for K3 surfaces : an announcement (Algebraic Number Theory and Related Topics 2013)
"Algebraic Number Theory and Related Topics 2013". December 9~13, 2013. edited by Tadashi Ochiai, Takeshi Tsuji and Iwao Kimura. The papers presented in this volume of RIMS Kôkyûroku Bessatsu are in final form and refereed. This is an announcement of another paper by the author (published in Math. Z.). We prove that whether a K3 surface has potential good reduction can be determined from the Galois representation defined from the l-adic or p-adic étale cohomology groups of the K3 surface. This is an analogue of the Néron-Ogg-Shafarevich criterion for abelian varieties. We also have an application to the period map of K3 surfaces in mixed characteristics
Strain‐Induced Ring Expansion Reactions of Calix[3]pyrrole‐Related Macrocycles
The recent discovery of calix[3]pyrrole, a porphyrinogen-like tripyrrolic macrocycle, has provided an unprecedented strain-induced ring expansion reaction into calix[6]pyrrole. Here, we synthesized calix[n]furan[3-n]pyrrole (n=1 similar to 3) macrocycles to investigate the reaction scope and mechanism of the ring expansion. Single crystal X-ray analysis and theoretical calculations revealed that macrocyclic ring strain increases as the number of inner NH sites increases. While calix[1]furan[2]pyrrole exhibited almost quantitative conversion into calix[2]furan[4]pyrrole within 5 minutes, less-strained calix[2]furan[1]pyrrole and calix[3]furan were inert. However, N-methylation of calix[2]furan[1]pyrrole induced a ring-expansion reaction that enabled the isolation of a linear reaction intermediate. The mechanism analysis revealed that the ring expansion consists of regioselective ring cleavage and subsequent cyclodimerization. This reaction was further utilized for synthesis of calix[6]-type macrocycles
Method of thermally glazing an article, U.S. Patent 6,127,005
Coating and filler materials for localized thermal processing of glazed ceramics and other brittle and low thermal conductivity materials. The coating materials include oxide compositions that exhibit coefficients of thermal expansion which are less than about 8×10-6 /° C. and glass transition temperatures which are less than about 400° C. The filler materials include particulate oxide materials which do not substantially react during localized thermal processing of glazed ceramics and other brittle and low thermal conductivity materials. The coating and filler materials are useable together as a composite material for repairing cavities having depths greater than about 2 mm
Splitting and reorientation of pi-conjugation by an unprecedented photo-rearrangement reaction
A dodecahexaene analogue cross-conjugated with four carbonyl groups was prepared from an aliphatic tetraketone. Exposure to LED light (>420 nm) led to the splitting of the dodecahexaene conjugation into two hexatriene subunits, connected through a stereogenic carbon atom. The two triene subunits exhibited excitonic coupling in the UV-Vis absorption and CD spectra
