Knowledge, attitude and practice of emergency contraception among health care providers in Ismailia, Egypt
Objective: To explore the knowledge, attitude and practice of health care providers in Ismailia, Egypt regarding emergency contraception.
Participants and method: A structured questionnaire was distributed to a total of 270 health care providers (obstetrics and gynecology specialists and general practitioners or family physicians). The questionnaire contained four main domains: demographic characteristics; knowledge about EC; attitude toward EC; and practice of EC.
Results: Knowledge of specialists was significantly higher than general practitioners/family physicians regarding the three most commonly used methods of EC, viz; combined oral contraceptive (Yuzpe) method, progesterone only pills (plan B) method and IUCD. Only 39.5% of specialists and 24.0% of GPs/family physicians had good knowledge of EC (p = 0.01). 45.7% of specialists and 42.6% of GPs/family physicians had favorable attitude toward EC with no significant difference. 39.5% of specialists and 26.6% of GPs/family physicians reported ever prescribing EC. Yuzpe method was the most commonly prescribed method by specialists (31.5%) and GPs/family physicians (27.0%) with no significant difference. Knowledge and favorable attitude were significantly associated in both groups. Age and years of experience significantly affected the three outcome measures.
Conclusion: A deficit in knowledge and a negative attitude shown by health care providers lead to an insufficient use of EC methods
Education in Bahrain - 1919-1986 an analytical study of problems and progress
The purpose of this thesis is to present a case study of educational development in Bahrain, a developing country with limited resources. This study attempts (1) to assess the development of education in Bahrain from 1919 to1980 and to analyse the main problems; and (2) to give a comprehensive account of the present educational system (1980 onwards) in the context of recent economic developments and trends. The thesis is organised into eight chapters. Chapter One describes the geography, the people, the history and the economy of the Islands. Chapter Two is concerned with the historical development of Bahraini education from 1919 until 1980. It is an analysis of the different stages, the problems at each stage and the measures taken to tackle them. Chapter Three examines the main forces that have affected the present development, both positively and negatively. Chapter Four provides a survey of the present educational system especially in the State schools. Also the reforms which have been implemented since 1980 are fully examined. Chapter Five is devoted to higher education both at countries abroad and at home colleges. There is also a discussion of teacher training and an analysis of the current status of the teaching profession. Chapter Six examines the role of the private schools in Bahrain from pre-primary to secondary, national and foreign. Chapter Seven deals with the provision for adult literacy and for special educational needs. Chapter Eight concludes this study by evaluating both the strengths and the weaknesses in the system, as well as by analysing the problems that Bahrain education has experienced in the past and which still persist in the present. Finally there are a number of recommendations

Role of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (vitamin D3) as immunomodulator in recurrent missed miscarriage
Objective: To evaluate the immunomodulatory role of vitamin D3 in prevention of pregnancy loss in cases of recurrent miscarriage.
Patients and methods: A total of 40 pregnant women with gestational age at or less than 6 weeks with recurrent miscarriage were enrolled in the present study and randomly assigned to study and control group each (n = 20 for each group) after fulfilling certain inclusion and exclusion criteria. All participants were assessed through complete history, general and obstetric history, ultrasound assessment and routine full laboratory evaluation. IFN-γ was assessed at ⩽6 week gestation on recruitment, then after treatment every 2 weeks till 14th week for both groups. Both groups received standard measures for cases with recurrent miscarriage. Study group participants were treated with oral vitamin D3 supplementation. Outcome measures included continuing pregnancy rate and change in INF-γ values between first and final assays.
Results: No statistically significant difference was noted between both groups regarding baseline demographic, clinical characteristics and ultrasonographic findings. Control group participants were found to have significantly higher levels of IFN-γ compared to the study group after treatment. Risk of miscarriage was 15% lower among the study group than the control group. Continuing pregnancy rate was 70% in the study group and 55% in the control group. No significant difference was found between both groups regarding symptoms suggesting vitamin D3 side effects.
Conclusion: Although statistically insignificant, vitamin D3 oral supplementation has resulted in reducing risk of pregnancy loss up to 15% among women with recurrent miscarriage so it is a matter that is worth more attention and large scale studies with larger sample size may result in more significant results

Factors associated with recurrent endometriomas after surgical excision
Abstract Background Endometriosis affects women in reproductive age and causes a great impact on their lives. When affecting the ovary, excision represents the main management option. However, recurrence represents a challenging situation for patients and physicians. This study aimed to determine factors contributing to endometriomas recurrence after surgical excision. Results This was a quasi-experimental study recruiting 60 patients with ovarian endometrioma. The mean age was 30.33 ± 7.95 years. The mean parity was 1.27 ± 0.69. The recurrence rate after excision was 11/60 (18.3%) after a mean follow-up period of 22.62 ± 4.96 months. None of the patients’ characteristics or endometriosis-related characteristics were significant factors contributing to cyst recurrence (age, parity, history of infertility, preoperative endometrioma diameter, preoperative AFC, preoperative AMH, degree of pelvic pain, degree of dysmenorrhea, degree of dyspareunia, pelvic tenderness, and induration) (p value > 0.05). Conclusion The patient’s related factors and endometrioma characteristics did not predict its recurrence
Fetal gender, serum human chorionic gonadotropin, and testosterone in women with preeclampsia
Objectives Evaluation of the association between fetal gender, serum beta-human chorionic gonadotropin, and serum testosterone, and preeclampsia. Methods Case-control study conducted at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department. 120 patients divided into study group (patients with preeclampsia subdivided into mild and severe) and control group (normotensive women). Interventions Fetal gender was determined. Serum testosterone and HCG levels were estimated at 32 weeks or at the time of diagnosis of preeclampsia (study group) or recruitment (control group). Results Positive association between the male gender of the fetus and preeclampsia. Increased HCG and Testosterone were associated with developing preeclampsia. Conclusion The mechanism of preeclampsia could be androgen-mediated. There is a significant correlation between serum HCG and testosterone and preeclampsia
