    Coaching for Emancipation: A framework of coaching in oppressive environments

    This study aims to develop a theoretical and practical framework for the use of coaching in oppressive environments to support the emancipation and development of individuals. A review of the literature suggests that the dynamics of oppression affect every aspect of the human condition. Meanwhile, there is limited understanding of how to support individuals in liberating themselves from the implications of oppression. The study sets out to examine whether coaching can be used as an emancipatory approach, and aims to explore how the context of oppression affects coachees, coaches and the coaching process. Building on a cross-disciplinary review of emancipatory approaches, an initial coaching model was developed. Then, a cooperative inquiry was conducted with a group of twelve coaches from Egypt, who used the initial model with 22 coachees over six months. The first set of findings offers a theoretical view of the individual’s journey from oppression to emancipation, starting from feelings of helplessness and self-blame through a number of cycles that lead to actions of resistance and narratives of liberation. Findings suggest that oppression has implications for the individual’s cognitive and emotional development, and emphasise the role of emotions in enabling the emancipatory process. The second set of findings is organised into three coaching processes, each underpinned by a theoretical understanding of its dynamics, enablers and barriers, as well as a number of practical considerations to improve its effectiveness. The first process “Naming Oppression” suggests that coaching can support emancipation through encouraging coachees to use narratives to understand, externalise and re-author their life. The second process called “Renewing Beliefs” explores how coachees can use critical reflection to understand and challenge the social and psychological structures leading to their experience of oppression. The third process titled “Fighting Back” focuses on how coachees undertake actions to resist and break from the cycle of oppression and to discover new possibilities for change. The third set of findings suggests that coaches in oppressive environments face a complex web of philosophical, psychological, and practical challenges, and discusses the implications of these challenges on their development. The study offers a theoretical and practical foundation upon which coaching for emancipation can be built, and proposes the need for further research into the experience of coachees and most especially the emotional side of their experience

Available are both Soft and Hard Copies of the Thesis.Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) have recently been used in modeling the mechanical behavior of fiberreinforced composite materials. ANN have also been successfully used in predicting the fatigue behavior of a certain material under loading conditions other than those used for training. The use of ANN in predicting fatigue failure in composites would be of great value if one could predict the failure of materials other than those used for training the network. This would allow developers of new materials to estimate in advance the fatigue properties of their material. In this work, experimental fatigue data obtained for certain fiber-reinforced composite materials is used to predict the cyclic behavior of a composite made of another material. The effect of the various mechanical properties on the training of the network is evaluated to obtain the most suitable combination of properties resulting in the best fatigue life prediction. The resilient back-propagation with 10 to 20 neurons depending on the input parameters resulted in accurate prediction when compared to experimental ones. An introduction to the use of Polynomial classifiers (PC) to predict the fatigue behavior is also presented. Available are both soft and hard copies of the thesis.Due to increased global competition and increased calls for environmentally benign machining processes, there has been more focus and interest in making processes more lean and agile to enhance efficiency, reduce emissions and increase profitability. One approach to achieving lean machining is to develop a virtual simulation environment that enables fast and reasonably accurate predictions of machining scenarios, process output and provide access to needed information. Investigation on the utilization of artificial intelligence is carried out. Artificial Neural networks (ANNs) are employed to develop a smart data base that can provide fast prediction of cutting forces resulting from various combinations of cutting parameters. The data base can also predict the cutting coefficient usually predicted to calibrate the force models. The data base would be highly beneficial to the growing manufacturing industry in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), as it can be used to decide upon optimum parameters prior to carrying out cutting tests. With time, the force model can expand to include different materials, tools, fixtures and machines and would be consulted prior to starting any job. Predictions are compared to measured experimental results and are shown to be in good agreement. To address some of the difficulties encountered when using ANNs to predict cutting forces, the use of Polynomial classifiers (PCs) was also investigated to predict the cutting forces. The purpose of this integrative literature review is to summarize critique and synthesize past studies. First, contributions of past researchers on AIS and users’ satisfaction are presented. Then followed by a brief discussion on previous empirical studies related to AIS and crises management. This provides an opportunity to investigate previously unexplored research settings; identify the gaps where research can be extended; and assist in identifying all potential attributes that could give significant contribution to the literature related to the AIS

    One-pot synthesis of spiro(indoline-3,4′-pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyridine)-5′-carbonitriles as p53-MDM2 interaction inhibitors

    Aim: Inhibition of P53-mdm2 interaction will lead to cancer cell apoptosis. This strategy was achieved by reported spiro-oxindole derivatives. Materials & methods: Spiro(indoline-3,4′-pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyridine)-5′-carbonitrile derivatives (4a-i and 9a, b) were synthesized and screened for their in vitro anticancer activity. The most active compounds were subjected to P53-MDM2 inhibitory activity, apoptotic and molecular docking studies. Results & discussion: Compound 4d exhibited potent and broad spectrum of antiproliferative activity with full panel GI 50 (MG-MID) value of 3.97 μM. Compounds 4d and 4i inhibited p53-MDM2 protein-protein interaction with IC 50 = 52.1 and 95.2 nM, respectively. Compound 4d inhibits the expression of wild p53 in MCF-7 more than mutant p53 in MDA-MB231 at the molecular level. Molecular docking studies illustrated the possible interaction of the target spiro-oxindoles with the p53 binding site on MDM2

    Class I histone deacetylase (HDAC) enzymes are key regulators of cell proliferation and are frequently dysregulated in cancer cells. Here we describe the synthesis of a novel series of class-I selective HDAC inhibitors containing anilinobenzamide moieties as ZBG connected with a central (piperazin-1-yl)pyrazine moiety. Compounds were tested in vitro against class-I HDAC1, 2, and 3 isoforms. Some highly potent HDAC inhibitors were obtained and were tested in pancreatic cancer cells and showed promising activity. Moreover, we summarize how the growth-inhibitory effects of these compounds can be determined in murine pancreatic cancer cell lines
