Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Carbazole Derivatives: A Promising Scenario for Breast Cancer Treatment
Chemotherapeutics used in cancer treatment may elicit pleiotropic effects interfering, for instance, directly on DNA metabolism or on endoplasmic organelles functions. Recently there has been a trend towards the use of molecular-targeted therapies as alternative treatments of cancer, arising from the need to overcome the onset of undesired side effects or drug-resistance. Thus, a major challenge is the design and synthesis of new agents able to interact with specific cellular components, often over-expressed or altered in cancerous cells, such as telomerase and topoisomerase or protein kinases, with reduced toxicity at effective doses. The main molecular targets for the development of new anticancer drugs include: cell surface receptors, signal transduction pathways, enzymes, gene transcription, ubiquitin-proteasome/heat shock proteins, and anti-angiogenic agents. Several natural or synthetic polycyclic molecules with carbazolic nucleus, which show attractive drug-like properties, were identified with the aim to increase their biological activities and their specificity, obtaining cytotoxic agents effective in a panel of cancer cell lines. The cytotoxic profile of these compounds has been assessed using several in vitro assays as, for instance, MTT, colony formation, and flow cytometry assays and some of these compounds showed an interesting profile at sub-micromolar concentrations. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
An effective strategy for cloning the mitochondrial citrate carrier: identification, characterization and tissue distribution in silver eel
A general and effective strategy to identify cDNA encoding for mitochondrial silver eel citrate carrier (CIC) has been developed. In particular using primers directed towards the highly conserved signature motif of the ortholog citrate cDNA sequences, the full-length silver eel cDNA from liver was obtained. This is 1193 bp in length with 5’ and 3’ untranslated regions of 90 and 149 bp, respectively. The open reading frame encodes a mature protein of 297 amino acids, preceded by a presequence of 20 amino acids. Additionally the mature CIC overexpressed in Escherichia coli and reconstituted into phospholipid vesicles showed the same substrate specificity of the native protein previously characterized in silver eel. The tissue distribution of silver eel CIC mRNAs was investigated and transcripts were detected at high levels in swim bladder whereas a weaker signal was found in brain, gill, intestine and liver
Chitin, Chitosan and Its Derivatives: Antimicrobials and/or Mitigators of Water
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major global health problem, exacerbated by the excessive and inappropriate use of antibiotics in human medicine, animal care and agriculture. Therefore, new strategies and compounds are needed to overcome this issue. In this view, it may be appropriate to reconsider existing biomaterials to alleviate antibiotic overuse. Chitin, a naturally abundant amino mucopolysaccharide, is a poly-β-1, 4-N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc). It is a white, hard, inelastic, nitrogenous polysaccharide and the major source of surface pollution in coastal areas. Chitosan derives from the partial N-deacetylation of chitin and originates from the shells of crustaceans and the fungi cell walls. It is a nontoxic natural antimicrobial polymer approved by GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe by the United States Food and Drug Administration). Chitin and chitosan, as non-toxic biopolymers, are useful compounds for wastewater treatment to remove pollutants, such as pharmaceuticals, heavy metals and dyes. The described features make these biopolymers intriguing compounds to be investigated for their application as antibacterials
Diarylureas as Antitumor Agents
The diarylurea is a scaffold of great importance in medicinal chemistry as it is present in numerous heterocyclic compounds with antithrombotic, antimalarial, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties. Some diarylureas, serine-threonine kinase or tyrosine kinase inhibitors, were recently reported in literature. The first to come into the market as an anticancer agent was sorafenib, followed by some others. Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
