Revivalism and Decoloniality: The Paradox of Modernization without Westernization in the Political Theology of Israr Ahmad
This article explores the contribution of modern Muslim revivalism to Muslims’ political decolonization, and the paradoxical role the West plays in that process. On the one hand, revivalism rejects the founding principles of liberal political theory, and on the other hand, it readily adopts the salient structures and mechanisms of the modern polity with a view to Islamize them, all the while insisting on the Muslims’ need to de-Westernize. Toward revealing the hitherto neglected dimensions of revivalism, my analysis adopts an unconventional route by subjecting revivalism to a semiotic analysis in conversation with the archetypal theories of Mircea Eliade and Carl G. Jung. The analysis unveils the universal psychological structures of revival, and their specific Muslim symbolization. I conclude (a) that depth psychology makes modern Muslim revival inevitable, which will only grow stronger and gain wider appeal while the Muslims continue to suffer decline; (b) that among the different forms of Muslim revival, revivalism ventures the farthest in decolonizing Muslim political imagination; (c) that the revivalist imagination makes their espoused caliphate imperative for the purpose of ritual participation in Islam’s sacred origins; and (d) that a critical reconstruction and evolution of revivalism holds out the promise of a greater contribution to Muslim decolonization. For my analysis, I largely turn to the Pakistani political theologian Israr Ahmad (d. 2010), whose ideas have been disseminated widely across the Muslim world, yet who has not received the requisite academic scrutiny. Moreover, intra-revivalist critique of revivalism has been a neglected aspect in the study of revival, and its careful scrutiny should become a topic of investigation in its own right. In that regard, Ahmad offers a most important critique of earlier revival efforts and their entanglement with certain aspects of coloniality
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
ڈاکٹر اسرار احمد کے فکری و تحریکی ماخذ ، تحقیقی مطالعہ
In the 19th century, the British, French, Dutch and Russians started gaining ground in different regions of the Islamic world ,which started to damage the central caliphate of the Muslims. This was the period when movements and efforts began to be made all over the world, including in the subcontinent, for revival the establishment of Islamic system. Overall, efforts for this purpose may not be the same because of the repression of circumstances or due to the differences of view, different Muslim scholars adopted different strategies to achieve the mutual goal.Among the scholars who worked in the form of collective discipline for the establishment of Deen, the name of Dr. Israr Ahmad is also of great importance who formed a movement named 'Tanzeem-e-Islami' The purpose of it’s establishment was to establish the caliphate system in all the perspective of life. The question is where did Dr. Israr Ahmad borrow the ideology of Establishing the Deen? What are the scholars from whom Dr israr Ahmad was so impressed that he had given up his field like medical and had finally lost all of his abilities in this nobl cause? This is the basic question which is answered and explained in the following articl
The Issue of the Ascension and Second Coming of Prophet Isa AH: Perspective of Javed Ahmad Ghamdi and Dr. Israr Ahmad
The majority of Muslims in this world follow the teachings of the Quran and Sunnah exactly, but there is room for debate and conflict over things that are not mentioned in the Holy Quran. Muslims believe in Ahadith (saying of the Prophetﷺ) because Ahadith upholds the utmost importance after the verses of the Quran. However, some people among Muslims argue about Ahadith's authenticity and reserve a parallel opinion instead of accepting it as it is, especially while giving arguments on some specific topics. One such topic is whether or not Prophet Isa ascended and will return to this world. This study provides the opinion of two renowned contemporary scholars, Javed Ahmad Ghamidi and Dr. Israr Ahmad. The study debates through the Quranic verses that Prophet Isa died or ascended to the heavens and includes the famous Ahadith related to his ascension and second coming to this world. The study also discusses the people who are categorically against the return of Prophet Isa and their evidence about it. The study includes the opinion of Javed Ahmad Ghamdi about this belief and his statement about the difference between verses ofi ithe Quran and the Ahadithii of the iProphet. The study also discusses Christianity's belief in the Prophet Isa. It explains how the second coming of Prophet Isa is a cornerstone of Islamic eschatology. Authentic Hadiths from the Prophet Muhammad confirm his return before the Day of Judgement. The ascension and second coming of Prophet Isa show thoughtful aspects for Muslims, whether they find it extremely unusual. There is a consensus among Islamic scholars that this event indeed unfolds Allah's divine plan. These beliefs not only affirm the truth of Islam but also guide Muslims in preparing for the ultimate accountability before Allah while having belief in the Ahadith of the Holy Prophet
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Jihad in the life of Prophet Muhammad: a mercy or terror
A global concern about Islam has been raised along with some pertinent events in the last few decades. Eventually, the occurrences of 9/11, Middle East issue, Iraq, Afghanistan and other countries have ignited this interest to a great extent among the masses around the globe. Many Western orientalists project a distorted image of Islamic Jihad, and advocate that, though Muhammad (PBUH) offered some ethical policies regarding warfare and conflict, he failed to maintain an ideal stance in many of the events of war in his lifetime instead. This issue bears a great significance as they attempt to link those historical instances with present day terrorist activities in the name of Islam and allegedly by some deviated Muslim terrorists, who accept no moral guilt for killing innocent civilians and destroying civil infrastructures. However, the historians have described that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) participated in 27 military expeditions whereas most of them achieved their goals without armed confrontation except for nine times. Besides, he sent a good number of military missions for various purposes and places. In response to propaganda campaigns by mass media and different scholarly activities, the importance of an objective analysis of the concept of Jihad from the perspective of the Qur’an and the authentic Sunnah is apparent. The objective of this research is to study the life of the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) in order to develop an objective response to the Orientalist criticisms regarding Jihad. This study would critically deal with some controversial issues in Jihad and analyze them based on the authentic historical references from the life of the Prophet. The ultimate findings of this study would be expected to clarify the reality against some biased misinterpretation of the events from the life of the Messenger of Allah (PBUH), who was the ambassador of peace and mercy to all humanity in all circumstances, ages and places
