This study investigated the ethnic and cultural backgrounds of personnel employed at University Malaysia Terengganu to determine the interplay between their interpersonal communication patterns. The interpersonal communication examined included how they interpret, understand and assess their own and their colleagues’ values and beliefs as well as their use of verbal communication and nonverbal communication. Also explored were their conflict management styles and their perceptions in relation to Malaysia Concept. This study was framed within Hofstede cultural values theory, verbal communication theory (Hall, 1959 and 1966; Knapp & Hall, 2006) and cross-cultural communication theory (Hofstede, 1984, 1991, 2001, 2010 and 2012). Guided by these perspectives the study explored the respondent’s perspectives and experiences. This study employed mixed methods as a research design with ethnography as a research approach. The methods selected for the study included both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods including an online survey and semi-structured interviews. A survey is used to identify the initial understandings of the respondents with interviews used to reflect the ‘real’ experiences of the respondents. Data were sequentially analysed using both SPSS and thematic analysis to explore in-depth experience of the respondents. The study contributes to the area of intercultural communication in a Malaysian context. It recommends for example that UMT personnel need to recognise the importance of understanding of their colleagues’ cultural backgrounds and how this contributes to effective workplace communication. The results also suggest that UMT needs to consider enhancing its institutional culture by raising the profile of and valuing multiculturalism

The Malaysian context is diverse in that there are three main ethnic and religious groups: Muslim Malay, Chinese Buddhist and Indian Hindus. These ethnic and religious groups are reflected in the staff composition at the University Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), a university on the East Coast of Malaysia. The site has been selected because, given the ethnic mix, there is potential for intercultural communication problems to surface among the staff which includes the three ethnic groups. The objective is to ascertain whether these communication patterns generate problems and conflict which may, in turn, affect the university's productivity

Thus, this paper investigated the taboos in relation to intercultural communication among University Malaysia Terengganu personnel from three ethnic backgrounds. The research employed a mix-method approach, the combination of online survey and in-depth interview. Data were sequentially analysed using SPSS and thematic analysis. The interview findings indicate that Malay personnel do not know much about the taboo of other ethnic groups compare to their colleague from different ethnicity and concludes that Malay personnel should be more open towards others values

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

The Rambu Solo ceremony is one-of-a-kind from several extensive ritual practices. Its uniqueness makes Toraja as a tourist destination and attracts a large number of visitors. This burial ceremony emphasised four components of life, namely love, prestige, religion, and economy, with the goal of respecting the souls as they return to eternity among the ancestors. However, when the customs and taboos between the Toraja people and tourists fail to be celebrated and informed, some unwanted scenes inspire. Thus, this study is written to investigate the perception of the local tourist on Rambu solo funeral ceremony as a death journey. This qualitative research used in-depth interviews as a data collection technique and was participated by three informants, three local tourists from Toraja. Transcriptions of interviews will be analysed using descriptive techniques, mainly using the data-reducing method. The result revealed that the Toraja Tujaan community views the ceremony as an obligatory act of service towards the bereaved family, particularly the parents. Additionally, the Rambu Solo ceremony serves as a means for showcasing pride and indicating the social status of the Toraja people. The Toraja community recognises four different social status: Tana bulawan (the golden tana caste, descended from the king), tana bassi (the iron tana caste, representing security personnel), tana karurung (the caste of free individuals), and tana kuah-kuah (a caste for the people of ramba and pesuru). On the other hand, the perceptions of local tourists towards the Rambu Solo ceremony highlight its uniqueness as a burial ritual

Mobility programs have been changed to online or virtual to overcome traveling restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Virtual mobility (VM) programs have been introduced to foster mobility experiences during the pandemic. Intercultural experience is usually connected with mobility programs overseas. However, the participants may have varied intercultural experiences during the VM program. This study will explore the intercultural experiences of outbound tourism students during their participation in The Asian International Mobility for Students (AIMS) program from 2020 to 2021. This study also discusses the advantages and disadvantages of online AIMS program. E-interview or online interviews are employed with a purposive sample of 13 AIMS outbound tourism students from a university in Terengganu. This study shows that the students experience dissatisfaction with online mobility and restricted opportunities in making their intercultural experience. However, they stated that this program brings more advantages than disadvantages despite all the restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic

Menjana budaya ilmu di kalangan pelajar institusi pengajian tinggi: satu anjakan paradigma

    Get PDF
