Get PDFSo let’s face it. The Movement Control Order (MCO) has been extended yet and yet again. Travel bans are still in effect and the hope for travel junkies seems so bleak. The only trip we can make now is just to and from home to the super¬markets. Therefore, to ease the longing in our hearts, let’s do a major throwback. And for me, the most memorable one I’ve ever had was a mother-daughter trip to Jerusalem, Palestine in 2012. It was just a short trip, and happened almost a decade ago, but I can still remember almost every detail.
My mum and I were invited to join the trip by our relative, and it was on such short notice but we agreed on a whim as such opportunities do not come by easily. It’s no news that Jerusalem has always been embroiled in conflicts leading to violence and blood sheds, which of course, made us nervous about this trip. However, our curiosity got the better of us and we decided to take the chances anyway. We began our journey with a flight from Penang to Jordan and proceeded with a bus to the border of Palestine via the King Hussein/ Allenby Bridge. This was where we first witnessed the disdain from the Jewish military. We were held back for nothing while watching tour buses from other countries easily permitted to pass through. While waiting, we were not allowed to take photos, however, one man in our tour group discreetly recorded some, probably thinking that he could outwit the Jewish authorities. Within minutes, the bus was suddenly filled with heavily armed Jews and they seized that man for interrogations. The whole bus was also ransacked by them - luggage, seats, everything! and after more than 8 hours of agonizing wait, the captured man was released, and we were finally allowed to enter the Palestinian border

This café opened its flagship store in Pusat Bandar Bertam Perdana quite recently, in 2021 and it received massive publicity to the point that it went viral for quite some time. Now the excitement about this new café in town has subsided, leaving a calm atmosphere for those who want to enjoy some relaxing coffee time. The signature drinks that you should try are definitely the Qahwa Crafted Drinks which comprise of an assortment of tamar series – among them, my favourites are Tamar Salted Caramel Latte and Tamar Hazelnut Latte. To complete your coffee quest here, you can order the selection of delightful pastries of even the yummy, savoury quesadillas. Albeit pricey, they’re definitely worth your money. Bertam - the image that comes to mind when people talk about this place is a sleepy small town located in Kepala Batas, the northernmost part of Penang. For those that have not had the chance to explore Bertam, they might not know that it has slowly become more vibrant with the sprung of many quaint cafes and fancy eateries. These past few months, I have taken the task of exploring some of the cafes here upon myself, as well as forcing my colleagues and family members to join me in this café hunt so that the next time you find yourself in Bertam, you’ll know where to go for a cuppa

Face Threats in Threads: Assessing the Responses to Impoliteness in Facebook Comments on 1MDB
No full textImpoliteness has become common among online users and appears to be consented by netizens. This study seeks to investigate the reaction to impoliteness from the perspective of face-threat witnesses (FTWs) in Facebook comments. Twelve news posts on Facebook regarding the 1MDB scandal in 2015 were selected, and impolite comment threads that were reactions to the news were extracted. Fifty-two threads were found to contain impolite comments targeted at non-participants of this interaction, thus corresponding to the characteristics of face-threat witnesses. Dobs and Blitvich's (2013) model for participant response options, Culpeper's (2011, 2016) Conventionalised Impoliteness Formulae (CIF) and Bousfield's (2007) list of defensive counter-strategies were used to analyse the responses. Impolite responses by the FTWs were found to be atypical. Denying the opposition either via being offensive or defensive subjugated the preference in the findings, though offensive appeared more prominently. Apart from deny opposition, corroborate opposition, and react, the current study also discovered new categories for the response options which did not fit in any of the categories, hence labelled as Distinct Features. The FTWs not only sanctioned impoliteness, but initial impoliteness in their responses, despite being 'other-directed'. © 2019 Penerbit Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. All rights reserved

Acara ini merupakan anjuran bersama Perpustakaan Tun Abdul Razak (PTAR) dan Bahagian Hal Ehwal Pelajar (BHEP) Universiti Teknologi MARA Cawangan Pulau Pinang dengan kerjasama Bank Muamalat. Dimulakan dengan acara senamrobik, peserta-peserta perarakan merdeka meneruskan dengan perbarisan pada tepat jam 9.30 pagi. Terdapat 10 kontigen yang menyertai perarakan kali ini dan Akademi Pengajian Bahasa (APB) telah digabungkan bersama Jabatan Sains Komputer dan Matematik (JSKM), Jabatan Sains Gunaan (JSG) dan Pusat Kejuruteraan Kimia untuk membentuk kontigen Anak Gemilang Malaysia. Kontigen ini dianggotai seramai 20 orang peserta dan diketuai oleh Puan Azlina Mohd Mydin dari JSKM. Peserta kontigen mengenakan Baju T merah hitam dan tudung bertemakan bendera Malaysia. Walaupun tidak tersenarai sebagai pemenang, kontigen ini telah berusaha bersungguh-sungguh dengan mengenengahkan Sang Rimau sebagai maskot kontigen. MH370 HEADLINES: A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF EMOTIVE LANGUAGE IN TWO NEWSPAPERS
Get PDFThe strategic use of emotive language in journalistic headlines serves to capture reader attention and evoke emotional responses. This study examines the application of emotive language in headlines related to Malaysian Airlines Flight 370 (MH370) through a comparative analysis of New Straits Times and The Washington Post. Using Martin and White's (2005) appraisal theory, the research investigates attitude systems (affect, judgement, and appreciation) and graduation systems (sharp and soft tones) in headline construction. The study adopts a qualitative approach, analyzing 10 headlines from each publication through content analysis, with headlines selected via homogeneous purposive sampling. The findings reveal that cultural context significantly influences the deployment of emotive language, with news outlets strategically leveraging social contexts to elicit specific emotional responses from their target audiences. This relationship between cultural background and emotional interpretation underscores both the power and potential risks of emotive language in headline construction. While effective use of emotive language can enhance reader engagement, its misuse may lead to sensationalism and misinterpretation of news content. These insights provide valuable guidance for researchers, journalists, and academicians in crafting effective and ethically sound headlines

That evening, their class teacher announced about an upcoming trip to Pantai Kerachut, a beautiful, secluded beach in Penang and asked if the students would like to join. Both girls excitedly listed their names as they saw that Adi is also going. “The time has come for Lisa to know her true place. She can’t go on living happily while I'm miserable. Adi is mine!” thought Fiza, scheming in her head. They happily prepared for the trip, buying new matching swimsuits, beach hats and other necessities. After a couple of weeks, the day for their trip finally arrived. Lisa and Fiza arrived early at school, excited with the prospect of spending more relaxing time with Adi, their subject of obsession. Soon, the teacher called out all the names in her list to board the bus. One by one, all the students had been called, including Adi and Fiza, which only left Lisa standing alone by the bus. Then, the teacher noticed her and asked, “what are you doing here Lisa? I thought you had cancelled your name. Are you here to send Fiza off? How sweet of you. '' Lisa felt silly standing there in her beachwear as her friends waved goodbye and the bus took off. She wanted to cry but no tears came as she was too humiliated with the whole incident. Get PDFThe Academy of Language Studies (ALS) of UiTM Penang Branch, in collaboration with the Resource Center of SK Permatang Bertam, the Highly Immersive Program (HIP) Unit, and the English Language Committee of SK Permatang Bertam in Kepala Batas,Penang, organised the Dare to Speak 2.0 Public Speaking Program on October 28, 2023. Supported by 28 lecturers from the Academy of Language Studies, this community service program involved 88 students from Level 2 (Year 4 to Year 6) of Sekolah Kebangsaan Permatang Bertam in Kepala Batas and surrounding schools. The program commenced with an opening ceremony, including an address by the Program Director, Ms. Norhafizah AbdulHalil, followed by an inaugural speech by the Headmaster of SK Permatang Bertam, Mr. Hj Roslan Othman. Subsequently, thee vent proceeded with a certificate and souvenir presentation session to the school and participating students, followed by a photography session. After the opening ceremony, students were divided into 8 groups for group activity sessions. Each group was facilitated by two instructors, consisting of lecturers from APB. The modules provided were based on public speaking activities, including exercises such as Show and Tell and the Story telling Challenge. These activities aligned with the program's objective of helping students master the fundamentals of public speaking in English. Other than strengthening the bonds and rapport between APB staff and the local residents, this program also managed to cultivate a caring and sincere attitude among APB staff through pure efforts such as donations and knowledge-sharing. Thus, the program indeed fostered a spirit of cooperation, mutual assistance, tolerance, and teamwork among APB staff
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
