No full textBlack Coral Distribution in the Italian Seas: A Review
Full text linkAntipatharian corals are important structural and complex members of benthic communities inhabiting the Italian seafloor. In this study, the distribution of black corals in Italy is reported and mapped for the first time. This review has permitted the identification of occurrences of such vulnerable marine ecosystems along the Italian coasts in a bathymetric range of 42 m to 790 m. Black corals appear to be most conspicuous and widely distributed in the mesophotic zone (from around 60 to 300 m depth), with a major occurrence on the rocky bottom and shoals. This review also highlights that these communities suffer direct damage from anthropogenic impacts (fishing activity and lost garbage). Finally, this study provides evidence that the reported Italian submarine sites associated with the occurrence of black corals probably represent only a small portion of their real distribution. This finding urges the need to increase monitoring efforts to support the protection and the conservation of these pristine species assemblages
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. No full textThis paper describes the preliminary stages and the theoretical and methodological inspiration for the design of UrbanCraft, a gamified activity based on Kevin Lynch’s mental maps and aiming at enhancing youth participation and inclusion in urban co-design and governance. This activity draws on previous local experiences on participation and social inclusion, held in the Southern Italian city of Palermo, in an attempt to mix urban studies, serious games and artificial intelligence methodologies. In this experiment, we designed a gamified activity conceived for nine- to twelve-year-old primary and secondary school children, due to our previous cooperation with several primary and secondary schools in Palermo. Overall, the goal of this proposal is to adapt Lynch’s notions of imageability and public images to a serious game and lead the players to an enhanced spatial awareness of their neighborhood and the entire city. Although UrbanCraft is still in its early design stages, the existing network of public institutions, research centers and schools provides a fertile ground for developing the project

A sample of Italian consumers was interviewed. Consumer’ profile, motivations and purchasing behavior were described. Relationships between observed variables and the latent constructs that explain the preferences were highlighted. There is asymmetric information between consumers and producers. Consumers believe Pasta is made with Italian grains, and therefore it is healthy and safe, although that’s not always the case. Intrinsic and extrinsic high quality, which derives from growing and production technologies, is required
Are CO2-rich seafloor pockmarks a suitable environment for ostracod assemblages? The example of the Zannone Giant Pockmark (central-eastern Tyrrhenian)
Full text linkDespite their high abundance and diversity, ostracods adapted to a particular chemosynthetic environment and its surroundings have rarely been studied. Therefore, the thresholds and environmental characteristics shaping their assemblages are poorly known. Here, we report a detailed study of the ostracod assemblages occurring around the Zannone Giant Pockmark, a CO2 hydrothermal vent system recently discovered in the central-eastern Tyrrhenian Sea. Although among crustaceans, ostracods seem to have the longest stratigraphic record in fossil seeps and hydrothermal vents starting in the Palaeozoic, our results indicate that their occurrence is driven by CO2 that represents an insurmountable threshold for ostracods’ life
Amino acids in surface sediments of the Zannone Island shelf (Western Mediterranean Sea): Possible bioindicators of submarine hydrothermal activity
No full textThis study shows results from amino acid analysis of seafloor sediment sampled between ~80 and ~130 m depth, within an active hydrothermal field located off Zannone Island (Tyrrhenian Sea). The total hydrolysable amino acid (THAA) content was determined at eight stations, three located within the main hydrothermal depression (i.e. the Zannone Giant Pockmark, ZGP) and five located in the surrounding seafloor. THAA concentration ranged between ~2 and ~11 nmol mg−1 dw and the lowest THAA concentrations were found at stations located within the ZGP. Amino acids resistant to degradation or originating from bacteria (β-alanine, histidine, leucine, arginine and lysine) had higher relative abundances inside the ZGP, whereas amino acids susceptible to degradation or originating from cellular plasma (proline, phenylalanine and tyrosine) showed higher relative abundances outside the ZGP. Degradation and reactivity indices were calculated, and the sedimentary organic matter in the three outside ZGP stations B07, B08 and B09 was found to be the most labile and reactive. Together with THAA concentrations, sediment grain size and carbon percentages were measured at 12 stations, five located within the ZGP and seven located outside the ZGP. At all stations, the percentage of sand was ~75% or higher. Carbon percentages were lower in samples located inside the ZGP than in the surrounding stations. The southern outside ZGP station B12 was found to be similar in terms of amino acids composition to the three inside ZGP stations, suggesting the influence of the hydrothermal fluids at this station
Variations on the Author
Full text link“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
