Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods

Diagonal compression tests on masonry panels strengthened by FRP and FRCM
In this paper, results of an experimental campaign on masonry panels strengthened by using
fiber reinforced composite materials are presented. Single-leaf masonry walls were reinforced by means of Fiber
Reinforced Polymers (FRP) or Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Matrix (FRCM) composites with different kinds
of fibers (carbon or glass) and different reinforcement layouts. The specimens were then subjected to diagonal
compression test in order to evaluate the shear strength of masonry for unreinforced panels and the effectiveness
of the strengthening solutions for the reinforced ones. The results showed a consistent increment in the load
bearing capacity of the reinforced panels; moreover, the retrofitted specimens exhibited less brittle failures with
respect to the unreinforced ones. The analytical formulation, according to the Italian CNR Guidelines, for the
definition of the fibers contribution in terms of shear strength is discussed and compared with the experimental
results. Some modification to the original formulation is finally proposed
The influence of climate on the distribution of lichens: a case study in a borderline area (Liguria, NW Italy)
The purposes of this article are to quantify the relationship between epiphytic lichen distribution and macroclimatic variables in the study area and to provide a case study for evaluating the predictive role of epiphytic lichens as bioclimatic indicators. The study was carried out in the Liguria region (NWItaly), a small (5432 km2) borderline area, where phytoclimatic features range from the dry Mediterranean to the Alpine in a few kilometers. Epiphytic lichen diversity was sampled using a standardized protocol [Asta et al (2002) In: Nimis et al (eds) Monitoring with lichens: monitoring lichens. Kluwer, Dordrecht]. Abundance of the species in the sampling sites was related to macroclimatic parameters (yearly average temperature and rainfall) and non-parametric multivariate models were calculated to find significative relationships among predictive and response
variables. A total of 59 species showed highly significant relation with macroclimatic parameters. Four groups were selected, by means of a cluster analysis, related to four climatic niches (warm-humid, cold-humid, mesothermic-humid, warm-dry). Distributional pattern of the groups in the survey area showed a good correspondence with the bioclimatic units of Liguria region described by Nimis [(2003) Checklist of the Lichens of Italy 3.0. www.dbiodbs.univ.trieste.it. Cited 1 Jun 2006]. A significant subset of epiphytic lichen species in the study area have been proved to be efficient bioclimatic indicator and it is supposed to give good results to monitor climatic changes, in a long-term perspective
Comparative analysis of virtual screening approaches in the search for novel EphA2 receptor antagonists
The EphA2 receptor and its ephrin-A1 ligand form a key cell communication system, which has been found overexpressed in many cancer types and involved in tumor growth. Recent medicinal chemistry efforts have identified bile acid derivatives as low micromolar binders of the EphA2 receptor. However, these compounds suffer from poor physicochemical properties, hampering their use in vivo. The identification of compounds able to disrupt the EphA2-ephrin-A1 complex lacking the bile acid scaffold may lead to new pharmacological tools suitable for in vivo studies. To identify the most promising virtual screening (VS) protocol aimed at finding novel EphA2 antagonists, we investigated the ability of both ligand-based and structure-based approaches to retrieve known EphA2 antagonists from libraries of decoys with similar molecular properties. While ligand-based VSs were conducted using UniPR129 and ephrin-A1 ligand as reference structures, structure-based VSs were performed with Glide, using the X-ray structure of the EphA2 receptor/ephrin-A1 complex. A comparison of enrichment factors showed that ligand-based approaches outperformed the structure-based ones, suggesting ligand-based methods using the G-H loop of ephrin-A1 ligand as template as the most promising protocols to search for novel EphA2 antagonists
The delta F508 mutation in cystic fibrosis patients of southern Italy.
Fifty one independent cystic fibrosis (CF) families originating from a restricted area of Southern Italy (Campania) have been analyzed for KM19 and XV2c haplotypes and the delta F508 mutation: 54\% of the total CF chromosomes show the delta F508 mutation. No significative correlations were obtained when clinical score, radiological score, Pseudomonas colonization, or clinical symptoms at presentation were matched with the presence or absence of the delta F508 mutation

Structure of the mouse growth/differentiation factor 9 gene
Using a mouse GDF-9 cDNA as a probe, over 20 kb of sequence encompassing the GDF-9 gene was isolated from a mouse 129SvEv genomic library. Sequence analysis of the exons, exon-intron boundaries, and 5'- and 3'-non-translated regions was used to establish the structure of the mouse GDF-9 gene. The GDF-9 gene is encoded by two exons separated by a 2.9 kb intron. Multiple putative transcription start sites are detected between 31 and 57 bp upstream of the start site of translation and a putative polyadenylation signal lies 342 bp 3' of the end of translation. Knowledge of the GDF-9 gene structure will enable us to further understand the role of GDF-9 in ovarian physiology and development
