The search for resources to help build an interface between history and mathematics teaching, as a way of helping in the process of obtaining and re-signifying mathematical knowledge, has gained increasing focus in the research carried out in the first two decades of the 21st century. In this sense, the aim of this study is to present the carpenters squire contained in the treatise A Booke Named Tectonicon (1605) by Leonard Digges (1520-1559), as well as the mathematical knowledge associated with its construction and manipulation processes. In order to achieve the proposed objective, a qualitative, documentary study was carried out, using the original work as the primary source, with the support of a bibliographic survey of secondary studies, in order to understand the social and historical context in which the author, the treatise and the instrument were inserted. From this, it was possible to notice the mobilization of diverse mathematical knowledge associated with the construction and use of the carpenter's square, such as units of measurement of the imperial system and units of angular measurements. With this, we conclude that the instrument described by Leonard Digges (1520-1559) in Tectonicon has, in its construction and use processes, mathematical knowledge which, from a didactic treatment, can contribute to the process of articulation between History and Mathematics teaching.

    The Leonard Peltier Trial

The American Indian Movement (AIM) was founded in Minnesota in 1968 to promote traditional Native American culture and instill pride in the Native American community. AIM\u27s targets included both the federal government, with whom it had a long list of grievances (especially focused on its record of many broken treaties) and progressive Indians, who they believed undermined native traditions and solidarity. In February 1973, AIM instigated a seventy-one day takeover of the site of a famous 1890 massacre at Wounded Knee, South Dakota. The massacre had resulted in the deaths - at the hands of the United States Calvary - of several hundred Sioux women and children. In response to the AIM protest, the United States sent troops and tanks. The standoff ended with two deaths and a series of trials of AIM leaders. In the two years that followed, the Pine Ridge Reservation came under the control of the progressives and elected tribal leader Dick Wilson. Wilson proved to be a vicious and unscrupulous leader, using his power to attack traditionalists. He enforced his will with the aid of a vigilante force called GOONs (Guardians of the Oglala Nation). In the years between 1973 and 1975, called The Reign of Terror by AIM, the Reservation saw over sixty unsolved murders and had the highest murder rate in the United States. More people were killed at Pine Ridge, with a population of about 12,000, than in the rest of the entire state of South Dakota. In 1975, traditionalists at Pine Ridge asked AIM leaders to send members to the Reservation to protect against further GOON attacks. Among the AIM members to respond to the call was thirty-year-old Leonard Peltier who, at the time, was wanted in Wisconsin on charges of assault and attempted murder of a police officer. AIM established a base of operations at Oglala, the town in the Pine Ridge Reservation with the highest concentration of traditionalist Indians. Hostility toward the federal government and cooperating progressives ran high at Oglala. Around 11 a.m. on June 26, 1975, FBI agents Jack R. Coler and Ronald A. Williams entered the Jumping Bull compound in Oglala intending to serve an arrest warrant on Jimmy Eagle, a young Indian accused of kidnapping and armed assault, who they believed might be driving a red pick-up truck. The agents began following a red and white van that they believed contained Jimmy Eagle. In fact, the vehicle contained Peltier and two other AIM members. Gunfire erupted and the agents soon found themselves pinned down amidst crossfire and were wounded. Did Leonard Peltier, at close range with his AR-15, execute two FBI agents who had entered the Pine Ridge Reservation? Peltier\u27s prominent supporters, including author Peter Matthiessen (In the Spirit of Crazy Horse) and Hollywood director and film star Robert Redford (Incident at Oglala), suggested in their accounts suggest that Peltier was the innocent victim of unscrupulous government law enforcement agents and prosecutors. On the other hand, the federal law enforcement community and - most importantly - a federal jury in Fargo believed that Peltier committed first-degree murder on that June day in South Dakota. Peltier\u27s defenders, both inside and outside the American Indian Movement, consider him to be America\u27s foremost political prisoner. To many others, however, Peltier is nothing more than a brutal killer who deserves to spend the rest of his days in a federal penitentiary in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. What really happened on June 26, 1975? Did Peltier get a fair trial? Is it time to free Leonard Peltier

Bernard Bosanquet a Leonard Hobhouse – spór o metafizyczną teorię państwa

The subject of this article is the course and consequences of a dispute between Bernard Bosanquet and Leonard Hobhouse over philosophical concepts expounded by the first of those thinkers in his The Philosophical Theory of the State. The Author begins by presenting the profiles of those philosophers, focusing mainly on the similarities between them. The nature of those had both theoretical (being the outcome of the fact that they had the same teacher and role-model – Thomas Hill Green) and practical (they were both engaged in activities leading to the improvement of the moral and material condition of the poorest) character. The Author conitinues by sketching Bosanquet’s political theories, dedicating most of his attention to the concept of the general will, which he descirbes as system of ideas responsible for the character of social and political order. This concept was the main object of Hobhouse’s launched attack. Hobhouse was especially concerned about practical consequences of identifying the general will with the real will and juxtaposing them with the actual wills of particular citizens. Hobhouse saw here the possibility of legitimizing dictatorship as a system of rule where the representatives of the state’s institutions ‘know best’ the real needs of the the individuals

This is a master's dissertation in Visual Arts whose purpose is to debate authorship and appropriation in contemporary art, with a focus on the production of two North American artists: Adrian Piper and Zoe Leonard. In order to analyze their artistic practices, we begin the journey analyzing appropriation in modern art from the relations of representation and power, and then moving forward in the study of appropriation in allegorical and in site-specific procedures in contemporary times, without losing sight of institutional criticism and identity issues that are intertwined in the artistic processes analyzed. At the same time, we analyze the path of authorship in contemporary times, taking as a guideline the notions brought by Marcel Duchamp in the “creative act”, in “the death of the author”, by Roland Barthes and in the “author as a function”, by Michel Foucault and the voice of the women, from Nelly Richard’s feminist writings and Dijamila Ribeiro’s place of speech of black feminism. When entering the research cut, we started to analyze some works of the artists Adrian Piper and Zoe Leonard, who update questions of appropriation and authorship in their artistic practices and debate relevant issues when making contemporary artTrata-se de dissertação de Mestrado em Artes Visuais cujo objetivo é discutir a autoria e a apropriação na arte contemporânea, com enfoque na produção de duas artistas norte-americanas: Adrian Piper e Zoe Leonard.

Portfolio of recorded performances and exegesis: Messiaen’s musical language for the jazz pianist - an exploration through performance.

Moving beyond Gunther Schuller’s Third Stream amalgamation of classical and jazz, this study explores whether the musical language of Olivier Messiaen can make a valid contribution to jazz piano performance. Initially, my project sought to answer such questions as: What elements of the musical language of Messiaen already exist in the jazz vocabulary? Am I able to extend this further? What are the timbral structures and pianistic effects within Messiaen’s musical language? What will be the most effective application of Messiaen’s musical language to jazz piano performance? Endeavouring to answer the final question led me to consider such aspects as whether the project should be limited to quoting Messiaen motifs, arranging Messiaen melodies, replacing jazz harmonic structures on standards with examples from Messiaen’s musical language or whether it would be better to approach the research conceptually. The work of Hubert Nuss provided encouraging reassurance that this was not an impossible task. In order to articulate this conception, the initial challenge was to decide how the classical and jazz worlds might meet in a ‘Messiaen’ technique. The approach adopted was similar to that used for undergraduate jazz study, namely, immersion in the piano scores and recordings of Messiaen’s music as well as by live performances. This was followed by the development and assessment of a contrived approach when specific techniques, such as tonal colourings or harmonic structures, were developed through prepared exercises and consciously included in my performance. It was then compared with an intuitive approach when no such precise parameters were established. This submission consists of CD recordings of two public recitals and an exegesis. It documents the development of this Messiaen technique and discusses its application in my performances. It also demonstrates the ways that Messiaen’s musical language can be used within jazz piano performance to provide a colour that distinguishes jazz piano performance in a competitive field.Thesis (M.Mus.) -- University of Adelaide, Elder Conservatorium of Music, 201

The text is about the unification and the codification of the law on joint-stock companies in Poland in the years 1918–1939. The author analyses the process of preparing the draft, which led to the President’s decree from March 22nd, 1928, Law on Joint-Stock Companies (Journal of Laws No. 39, item 383). This decree was subsequently included into the Commercial Code, which was passed as the President’s decree from June 27, 1934, part I (Journal of Laws No. 57, item 502). As the author endeavours to prove, the law on joint-stock companies was a common work of the Codification Committee, established in 1919, and the Ministry of Industry and Commerce. The main contribution to the works was made by professor Aleksander Doliński, who was chairman of the subcommittee of commercial law in the Codification Committee. Also dr Witold Supiński, legal counselor in the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, played an important role. In the last phase of works on the Commercial Code, the contribution of professor Tadeusz Dziurzyński should be mentioned. The author then characterizes the basic grounds of Polish law on joint-stock companies. He expresses that the normative system, instead of concession system, was implemented (with some exceptions). Like other modern legal systems, the law did not construct the definition of the joint-stock company, but pointed out the important elements which differentiate it from other companies. The author examines these elements. In conclusion he expresses that Polish law on joint-stock companies was an original law, based on domestic experience of commerce. However, it referred to the German Handelsgesetzbuch from 1897 (§ 178–319 HGB).The text is about the unification and the codification of the law on joint-stock companies in Poland in the years 1918–1939.
