Existence of zero-energy impurity states in different classes of topological insulators and superconductors and their relation to topological phase transitions

    No full text
We consider the effects of impurities on topological insulators and superconductors. We start by identifying the general conditions under which the eigenenergies of an arbitrary Hamiltonian H belonging to one of the Altland-Zirnbauer symmetry classes undergo a robust zero energy crossing as a function of an external parameter which can be, for example, the impurity strength. We define a generalized root of det H and use it to predict or rule out robust zero-energy crossings in all symmetry classes. We complement this result with an analysis based on almost degenerate perturbation theory, which allows a derivation of the asymptotic low-energy behavior of the ensemble averaged density of states ρ ∼ Eα for all symmetry classes and makes it transparent that the exponent α does not depend on the choice of the random matrix ensemble. Finally, we show that a lattice of impurities can drive a topologically trivial system into a nontrivial phase, and in particular we demonstrate that impurity bands carrying extremely large Chern numbers can appear in different symmetry classes of two-dimensional topological insulators and superconductors. We use the generalized root of det H(k) to reveal a spiderweblike momentum space structure of the energy gap closings that separate the topologically distinct phases in px + ipy superconductors in the presence of an impurity lattice.peerReviewe

Tunable topological states hosted by unconventional superconductors with adatoms

    No full text
Chains of magnetic atoms, placed on the surface of s-wave superconductors, have been established as a laboratory for the study of Majorana bound states. In such systems, the breaking of time reversal due to magnetic moments gives rise to the formation of in-gap states, which hybridize to form one-dimensional topological superconductors. However, in unconventional superconductors even nonmagnetic impurities induce in-gap states since scattering of Cooper pairs change their momentum but not their phase. Here we propose a path for creating topological superconductivity, which is based on an unconventional superconductor with a chain of nonmagnetic adatoms on its surface. The topological phase can be reached by tuning the magnitude and direction of a Zeeman field, such that Majorana zero modes at its boundary can be generated, moved, and fused. To demonstrate the feasibility of this platform, we develop a general mapping of films with adatom chains to one-dimensional lattice Hamiltonians. This allows us to study unconventional superconductors such as Sr2RuO4 exhibiting multiple bands and an anisotropic order parameter.Peer reviewe

The purpose of the thesis was to study the effects of electronic preheating on the operation of a hybrid system. The impact of the trip, which was driven by using only electricity from the car hybrid battery, was specifically examined in this thesis. At the same time, changes in the average fuel consumption of the car were tracked. The effects were best noticed driving the same routes with a preheated car and the car without preheating, and comparing the results. The hybrid car used in the work is owned and used by the author. The car is mainly used in urban area but also at highway speeds. Driving consists of the author´s normal car use. The work involved three different phases. In the first phase, the car was preheated before each start-up at home, in accordance with the recommendations in force at the time of the work. In the second phase, the car was not preheated before start-ups. In the third phase, the results were reported and analyzed. Using a hybrid system in a car reduces fuel consumption and emissions compared to a car with an internal combustion engine only. Car preheating improves both driving safely and comfort when the temperature is low or near zero degrees. A preheated engine reaches faster its normal operating temperature compared to an engine that has not been preheated before driving. When the engine is running at its normal operating temperature, emissions and fuel consumption are reduced compared to a cold engine. Start-up emissions can also be reduced by preheating. The car has been mainly driven for short distances, whereupon the internal combustion engine of the system has not reached its normal operating temperature. The study shows that preheating has a positive effect on the ability of the hybrid system to use only an electric motor to move the car. This result is in line with the expectations

Tunable superlattice amplifiers based on dynamics of miniband electrons in electric and magnetic fields

AbstractThe most important paradigms in quantum mechanics are probably a twolevel system, a harmonic oscillator and an ideal (infinite) periodic potential. The first two provide a starting point for understanding the phenomena in systems where the spectrum of energy levels is discrete, whereas the last one results in continuous energy bands. Here an attempt is made to study the dynamics of the electrons in a narrow miniband of a semiconductor superlattice under electric and magnetic fields.Semiconductor superlattices are artificial periodic structures, where certain properties like the period and the energy band structure, defined in standard crystals by the nature, can be controlled. Electron dynamics in a single superlattice miniband is interesting both from the viewpoint of fundamental and applied physics. From the fundamental perspective superlattices serve as a model system for a wealth of phenomena resulting from the wavenature of charge carriers. On the other hand, superlattices can potentially be utilized in oscillators and amplifiers operating at THz frequencies. They can, in principle, provide a reasonable THz Bloch gain under dc bias and parametric amplification in the presence of ac pump field. Because of numerous scientific and technological applications in different areas of science and technology, including astrophysics and atmospheric science, biological and medical sciences, and detection of concealed weapons and biosecurity, a construction of compact tunable THz amplifiers and generators that can operate at room temperature is an important — but so far unrealized — task. This thesis focuses on the influence of electric and magnetic fields on small-signal absorption and gain in semiconductor superlattices in the presence of dissipation (scattering). We present several new ideas how the effects arising due to the wave nature of the electrons can be utilized in an operation of THz oscillators and amplifiers. In Papers I–V, we discuss the properties of superlattice sub-THz and THz parametric amplifiers, whereas the Papers VI–IX are devoted to the problem of domain instability in the realization of cw THz Bloch oscillator. In Paper IX we also establish a feasibility of new type of superlattice THz amplifier based on nonlinear cyclotron-like oscillations of the miniband electrons. The ideas presented in the Papers I–IX are supplemented here with a detailed discussion of the physical origin of the effects and more rigorous mathematical derivations of the main equations.Abstract The most important paradigms in quantum mechanics are probably a twolevel system, a harmonic oscillator and an ideal (infinite) periodic potential.
