Kata Kunci: Instrumen four-tier, identifikasi pemahaman, hidrolisis garam Instrumen diagnostik berfungsi untuk mengetahui ke¬le¬mahan-kele¬mahan pemahaman siswa pada konsep materi tertentu, sehingga nan¬tinya dapat diberikan tindak lanjut berupa perlakuan pembelajaran dengan tepat. Salah satunya yaitu pada materi pela¬jaran kimia yaitu hidrolisis garam pada kelas XI SMA yang perlu dianalisis. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan bertujuan untuk menyusun instrumen diag-nostik four-tier yang valid. Instrumen tersebut memiliki em¬pat tingkatan yaitu pada ting¬kat pertama berisi jawaban dari pertanyaan pilihan ganda, tingkat kedua berisi tentang tingkat keyakinan jawaban siswa, tingkat keti¬ga berisi pilihan alasan yang sesuai dengan jawaban, dan tingkat yang keempat ya¬¬itu tingkat keyakinan siswa memilih alasan. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode pengembangan pada model penelitian milik Treagust (1988) yang telah dilakukan modifikasi oleh Habiddin & Page (2019). Model penelitian tersusun dalam 6 tahapan, dian¬taranya; (1) Pemetaan konsep (mapping concept); (2) Uji coba & wawancara (testing & interviewing); (3) Identifikasi konsep siswa yang tidak santifik (defining students unscientific ide¬as¬); (4) Peng¬embangan prototipe instrumen diagnostik four-tier (developing the pro¬to-type four-tier); (5) Validasi prototipe instrumen diagnostik four-tier (validating the prototype four-tier); dan (6) Revisi produk hasil (refining the final four-tier). Materi yang dikembangkan yaitu pada KD 3.11 dalam instrumen pilihan ganda alasan terbuka yang dikerjakan dalam 2 kelas 11 SMA. Selanjutnya jawaban dan alasan dianalisis digunakan untuk pengembangan instrumen diagnostik four-tier pada jawaban alasan. Instrumen instrumen diagnostik four-tier ini dikerjakan oleh 64 siswa pada kelas 11 SMA Negeri 2 Malang dan hasilnya dilakukan analisis data. Berdasarkan hasil analisis data tersebut, diperoleh hasil peng¬embangan uji coba instrumen diagnostik four-tier berupa analisis validasi isi dan validasi empirik. Pada validasi isi untuk semua nomor dan semua kriteria komponen soal masuk kriteria valid, sedangkan validasi empirik diantaranya yaitu, uji validitas butir soal terdapat instrumen diagnostik four-tier yang tidak valid yaitu pada: (1) nomor 10,14 dan 18 pada ti¬er A (pilihan jawaban); (2) nomor 14,17 dan 19 pada tier R (pilihan alasan); serta (3) nomor 10, 14, dan 17, untuk tier B (pilihan jawaban dan alasan), sedangkan untuk uji reliabilitas butir soal baik pada pilihan jawaban, pilihan alasan, dan pilihan jawa¬ban-alasan semua nilainya tinggi. Kemudian untuk tingkat kesukaran butir soal pada jawaban, alasan, dan jawaban-alasan rata-rata semua tergolong sedang atau mudah bukan tergolong sukar, sedangkan untuk daya beda terdapat soal yang tidak sesuai dan keefektivitas distraktor masih ditemukan yang tidak masuk kriteria efek¬tif. Kemudian untuk soal yang tidak layak diperbaikan atau revisi dan menghasilkan produk akhir instrumen diagnostik four-tier.   SUMMARY Husniah, Isnatul. 2019. The diagnostic instrumen can be used to find out the lack of Students’ Understanding on certain materials, so that later the right learning treatment can be given as a further act. One of the chemistry materials is salt hydrolysis in XI grade high school. This research was done with the purpose to make a valid of instrument four-tier diagnostic test. The instrument has four level as for the first level was the answer of the multiple choices question, the second level was students’ confidence of their answer, the third level was choices of the reason related to the previous answer, the fourth level was the students’ confidence of chosing the reason. This research used the development methods that was used in Treagust research model (1988) which has been modified by Habiddin & Page (2019). This research models design in six steps; (1) mapping concept; (2) testing & interviewing; (3) defining students unscientific ide¬as; (4) developing the pro¬to¬type four-tier; (5) validating the prototype four-tier; and (6) refining the final four-tier. Material developed was KD 3.11 in multiple choices instrument with open minded reason that was done by 2 classes in XI grade high school furthermore, the answer and reason analized and used for the development of diagnostic instrument in reason of answer. Four-tier diagnostic instrument was done by 64 students of XI grade at SMA Negeri 2 Malang and the result was analized. Based  on the result of data analysis, the result of the development testing of four-tier instrument were obtained in form of content validation and empirical validation. For content validation all the number of question and all criteria question was valid, whereas empirical validation include the validity of questions was invalid four-tier diagnostic instrument in question (1) number 10,14 and 18 in A tier (multiple choice for answer); (2) number 14,17 and 19 in R tier (multiple choice for reason); and (3) number 10,14 and 17 in B tier (multiple choice for answer and reason), as for the question’s realibility test both with the multiple choice for answer, multiple choice for reason, and multiple choice for answer-reason was high scored. For the question’s difficulty level in answer, reason, and answer-reason was averagely classified as middle difficulties or easy not difficult, as of the different power there were questions that don’t suit and the effectiveness of the distractor that doesn’t effective still found. Furthermore for questions that didn’t suitable for fixing or revision and resulting the final product of four-tier diagnostic instrument

    Validating an instrument to investigate students’ conception of Salt hydrolysis

    This paper outlines the development and validation of a Four-tier instrument in the topic of salt hydrolysis (FTISH). The instrument was developed by using the procedure of FTDICK instrument as published by Habiddin & Page (2019). This study was a part of other separates studies conducted by other groups of researchers including Devita, Habiddin & Suaidy (2019) (in press). This study involved 127 students in total and data collection were carried out two times involving 64 students in the first data collection and 63 students in the second one. The participants of both groups were public secondary school students from Malang. The FTISH consists of 23 questions. The results show that the validity of the questions ranged between 0.263 and 0.745. The reliability of the instrument was 0.80 and falls in the high category. The future implementation of the instrument to support the teaching and learning of salt hydrolysis are also discussed
