    An examination of my cross-disciplinary artistic practice that attempts to bring together Asian meditative disciplines with Western inquiry through visualizing social and physical statistics. As I explore the relationship between language and sensation, I use Charles Pierce's three referential modes: the iconic, indexical and symbol-symbol to view how humanity as come to understand the world through images, objects and rituals.     Public Perceptions of Genetically Modified Foods: Americans Know Not What They Eat

    Biotechnology stands to be a defining technology in the future of food and agriculture. Proponents argue that science and industry are poised to bring consumers a wide variety of products that have potential for meeting basic food needs, as well as delivering a wide-range of health, environmental and economic benefits. Opponents counter that the potential exists for unintended consequences, ranging from ecological disruption to adverse human health implications, and that these risks are not fully understood. Fundamental questions exist, however, regarding the general public’s position on food products derived with the use of biotechnology. To address these questions, the Food Policy Institute addressed consumers using computer assisted telephone interviews (CATI) system, a public phone survey of a sample selection of 1203 U.S. residents was administered between March and April 2001. The questionnaire was developed to address perceived gaps in the current literature on American consumer awareness, acceptance, and perceptions of food biotechnology and to serve as the basis for a set of longitudinal studies that will be able to track public opinion over time.Food Policy Institute Publication Number RR-0302-001

    Macroecology and meiobenthos: Reply to Warwick (2014)

    Warwick (2014; Mar Ecol Prog Ser 505:295-298) suggests that my claim that the biology of marine metazoan benthos may scale continuously with body mass (Bett 2013; Mar Ecol Prog Ser 487:1-6) is an overstatement. His alternative hypothesis is that there is a ‘step-change’ in allometric relationships between the meio- and macrobenthos. I continue to propose that simple null hypotheses for standing stock size spectra and species size spectra of the metazoan benthos, consistent with metabolic theory and macroecology, offer parsimonious solutions. For standing stock and species size spectra I present field data that conform to these null hypotheses. Data from other studies, such as those suggested by Warwick (2014), may be difficult to place in the macroecological context, as those studies are constructed or presented in a different manner (e.g. they lack data on the number of individuals identified). I suggest that it may be useful to consider ‘evolutionary species size spectra’ separately from ‘macroecological species size spectra’. Both are valid testable hypotheses, and are not necessarily contradictory

    Temporal and spatial trends for trace metals in streams and rivers across Sweden (1996-2009)

    Long term data series (1996 through 2009) for trace metals were analyzed from a large number of streams and rivers across Sweden varying in tributary watershed size from 0.05 to 48 193 km(2). The final data set included 139 stream sites with data for arsenic (As), cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), and vanadium (V). Between 7% and 46% of the sites analyzed showed significant trends according to the seasonal Kendall test. However, in contrast to previous studies and depositional patterns, a substantial portion of the trends were positive, especially for V (100%), As (95%), and Pb (68%). Other metals (Zn and Cr) generally decreased, were mixed (Ni and Zn), or had very few trends (Co) over the study period. Trends by region were also analyzed and some showed significant variation between the north and south of Sweden. Regional trends for both Cu and Pb were positive (60% and 93%, respectively) in the southern region but strongly negative (93% and 75 %, respectively) in the northern region. Kendall's tau coefficients were used to determine dependence between metals and potential in-stream drivers including total organic carbon (TOC), iron (Fe), pH, and sulphate (SO(4)(2-)). TOC and Fe correlated positively and strongly with As, V, Pb, and Co while pH and SO(4)(2) generally correlated weakly, or not at all with the metals studied

    The fluorescence enhancement of 1-anilinonaphthalene-8-sulfonate (ANS) by modified beta-cyclodextrins

    The fluorescence enhancement of the probe molecule 1-anilino-8-naphthalenesulfonate (ANS) by a number of modified beta-cyclodextrins has been studied. Alkyl-and hydroxyalkyl-substituted beta-cyclodextrins show significantly greater enhancement of ANS fluorescence than does the parent unmodified beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD). In the cases of methyl-beta-cyclodextrin (Me-beta) and hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodentrin (HP-beta), enhancements by a factor of 120 and 180, respectively, were observed for ANS fluorescence, compared to a factor of only 8.4 in the case of beta-CD The binding constant for formation of the 1:1 ANS:CD complex was determined to be 370 +/- 80 M-1 for Me-beta and 430 +/- 70 M-1 for HP-beta. The large increase in enhancement ability was shown to be a result of the relatively less polar environment experienced by the ANS probe incorporated in the modified as compared to the unmodified cyclodextrin cavities. The dielectric constants of the HP-beta and Me-beta cavities experienced by the included ANS were found to be 22 and 25, respectively. These polarities are similar to that of ethanol, whereas that of beta-CD was found to be 54, a polarity similar to that of a 3.1 methanol:water mixture. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A.     A newly developed injection method for aluminum treatment in eutrophic lakes: Effects on water quality and phosphorus binding efficiency

Lake Reserv Manage. 33:152-162.Application of aluminum (Al) salts has been used to reduce phosphorus (P) concentrations in lakes since the 1960s. Al is typically applied to the water column where Al-hydroxides form, settle to the sediment surface, and bind P in sediment. Al can be transported to other, non-target areas of the lake, however, potentially limiting treatment effectiveness. To alleviate this problem, a new method has been developed in which the Al salt is injected directly into the sediment as a liquid. In this study, the binding efficiency and application costs were calculated for 2 lakes in Sweden that received injection applications of polyaluminum chloride (PAC). Binding efficiency was similar to previous water column applications, implying there is little difference between the 2 application methods. Other factors, however, such as dissolved organic matter and type of Al salt used (PAC vs. Al sulfate), can also affect binding efficiency. Thus, Al injection may have improved the amount of P bound per unit Al in the study lakes given the in-lake conditions and Al salt used. Treatment cost (cost per kilogram of P bound to Al) for the injection method compared to previous water column treatments was somewhat higher due to increased costs for buffered PAC and time needed for application. Both mobile sediment P and internal loading remained reduced compared to pre-treatment conditions, showing that the Al injection treatments continued to control sediment P release. More study is needed, however, to determine the relative effectiveness of this method in different types of lakes
