The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

The endothelial layer, which covers the internal surface of the arteries and arterioles, plays a vital role in maintaining adequate perfusion through constantly adjusting arterial diameter to metabolic demand. This explains why endothelial dysfunction is known as an early marker of cardiovascular diseases. Flow mediated dilation (FMD) is a well-known technique to assess non-invasively the endothelial function. During FMD, blood circulation of a large artery, such as the brachial, is blocked for five minutes and then suddenly released leading to reactive hyperemia due to increase in the diameter of the tested artery. Such a change in the artery diameter can be measured using high frequency ultrasound imaging. As the FMD-ultrasound technique is remarkably operator dependent and requires a very expensive setup, it has been limited to clinical research only. The main objective of the present study is to assess the endothelial performance via a forward model between central blood pressure (CBP) and radial Photoplethysmography (RPPG). To this end, CBP, RPPG and ultrasound images of the brachial artery are non-invasively and simultaneously recorded from 93 subjects. Ultrasound images are analyzed by an automatic edge-detection software providing a precise measurement of the arterial diameter. Using a threshold of 10% dilation, subjects are categorized into normal (FMD≥10%) and impaired endothelium groups (FMD<10%). Using system identification techniques, an individual CBP-RPPG model is estimated for each subject. The fitness of the individual model's output is used as a feature for discriminating normal from unhealthy subjects. The difference between the fitness during baseline (before blockage) and after cuff release is found to be a powerful criteria with results showing 86% and 96% of sensitivity and specificity when compared to FMD-ultrasound as reference. These results support the possibility of using this PPG-based technique to assess the endothelial performance non-invasively, hence opening the way towards a practical, low-cost alternative to perform mass-screening

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

In the dissertation entitled "Optimization of Transmission Protocols to Improve Quality of Service in Telemedicine Real-Time Applications", the aim is to develop a protocol modification for Multipath-TCP to improve the support for telemedical real-time applications over the Internet in a scenario between globally distributed locations. The goal of redundant Multipath TCP (rMPTCP) is to use multiple connections at the same time to compensate for delay and data losses by means of redundancy and thus to improve the quality of service of the transmission. The protocol adapts to the current circumstances of the data connection by correlating redundancy, connection quality, required data transmission rate as well as the data throughput offered by the network. Applications in telemedicine differ in their communicative and interactive manifestations and thus in their quality of service requirements. For this purpose, basic applications in telemedicine as well as specifications of the quality requirements of the resulting data streams are treated and classified. This is done with regard to a research scenario running between the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) and the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). It is followed by a presentation of quality of service mechanisms on the Internet. The basic functions as well as ways to improve them are described. The transmission distance between the two universities is evaluated according to the basic scenario with regard to different quality of service parameters with appropriate measuring tools in a way that conditions and problems can be identified. An evaluation of the various available connections between UDE and UKM is used to determine a combined usage and the possibilities for a multiple connection. The modeling and development of the protocol modification is performed under the previously-derived requirements. The basic mathematical connections are discussed and an introduction to the functionalities of the protocol is given. The properties and functions of the new protocol are modeled and additional tools developed for utilization within the scenario are designed. The functionalities are evaluated in practical tests and a final assessment is discussed. The result of this dissertation is the development of an Internet-compatible redundant protocol extension for multipath TCP, which is able to adapt to situations in the network by means of different algorithms and to take various measures in case of disturbances. The protocol extension is capable of achieving an improvement in service quality with regard to delays as well as delay variances for applications with "near real-time" requirements

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    No full text

Integrating Culture in Designing Groupware Applications as Contribution to Intercultural Collaboration Technology

    No full text
Many industries are now dealing with the issue of globalization and emphasized the need of the influence of a global marketplace. Globalization extends computing, information, and communication technologies across an increasing number of cultural boundaries, generating a corresponding need for cross-cultural partnerships. Due to globalization, global virtual teams with members from different cultures are an emerging trend. The use of collaborative projects is increasing and affects users’ approach to work in a collaboration application, so called groupware. Groupware is a collaboration application designed to support the work of groups. It can allow globalized industries and organizations greater coordination of activities, reducing and eliminating time and geography barriers, and speeding the decision making process. Groupware users are influenced by demographic, social, cultural, psychological and contextual factors, which complicate the understanding of groupware use. The different backgrounds of users may cause them to have different expectations and attitudes towards their acceptance of using groupware. In order for a specific technology application to be useful, applying technology appropriately to the needs of its users is very important. Groupware that only determines structures of communication, such as floor control, turn-taking, communication procedures, and so on may disadvantage and discourage people from different cultural communication styles. These factors should be considered by designers when designing such groupware application in order to be successful. A groupware targeted for multicultural users should have a flexible intercultural support which means can adaptively manage the cultural differences of its users. A great attention should be given for the cultural element in creating products and interfaces that are culture “fit” to its users. Understanding these social and cultural differences is very important in groupware to support cross-cultural collaboration. This dissertation offers solutions to the design issues in groupware for multicultural user to avoid a failed system. Most software engineers when designing applications focuses only on the technical issues and fail to include the social factors that are very important in developing technologies that serves as social applications. Therefore in this dissertation, two extension layers are introduced extending the well know 7-layers OSI model. These two extension layers of ISO/OSI layer model mainly focus on the end-user of the applications consisting of social layer as the 8th layer and cultural layer as the 9th layer, used to link applications to human needs. The social layer representing the support of groups and the cultural layer representing the communication as it is influenced through different cultural backgrounds of users using the tools. These extension layers help software engineers to develop applications within a socio-cultural deployment context. The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) is extended in this dissertation to understand the mechanism by which cultural differences could explain users’ behaviors toward the acceptance of groupware applications as a remote collaboration tool for global virtual team. A new approach, called culture-centered design and cultural engineering as the anchor for groupware development in multicultural context is introduced to define the requirements, features and functions that should be included in groupware as an intercultural collaboration tool. An expert system to be embedded in groupware, called Intercultural Collaboration Environment Expert System (ICEES), is also developed in the context of a cross-cultural collaboration and is expected to support PASSENGER 2, a new innovative groupware that is currently under development at the Institute of Computer Engineering, University Duisburg-Essen. ICEES provide advice to the group in selecting the most suitable tools for enhancing the group discussion. This dissertation is expected to serve as a benchmark for future research on groupware design for multicultural users across different countries
