He studied Dutch and Oriental language and literature at the University of Groningen (1891 - 1895) and comparative linguistic at the University of Leipzig (1895-1896). In 1915, he was appointed professor of general history at the Leiden University. Are there synergies between World Bank partial credit guarantees and private lending?
Since 1994, the World Bank has provided partial credit guarantees to private financiers of several large infrastructure projects in developing countries. A major objective of the partial guarantee program is to leverage Bank resources so as to provide developing countries with better private credit terms. A real test of the efficacy of World Bank partial credit guarantees is whether they also lower the interest rate and lengthen the effective maturity of the part of the credit not covered by the World Bank guarantee. On the basis of deals closed so far, the author finds no evidence that guarantees have affected nonguaranteed interest rates favorably, while the duration of the nonguaranteed credits remains relatively short.International Terrorism&Counterterrorism,Payment Systems&Infrastructure,Banks&Banking Reform,Economic Theory&Research,Strategic Debt Management,Financial Crisis Management&Restructuring,Banks&Banking Reform,Economic Theory&Research,Strategic Debt Management,Insurance&Risk Mitigation
The present study investigates the influence of José Ortega y Gasset on the play theory of Johan Huizinga. It especially analyzes the distinction between authentic and childish play (Huizinga), sport and pastime (Ortega) and the concept of club in both authors. The club is an original community through which the playful spirit enters and intervenes in the mundane world. According to both authors, the sports spirit creates the State and all political cultural institutions through this strange type of community
In addition to his historical works, and his biographies, as his life was drawing to a close, Huizinga spent his time studying general cultural theories. Huizinga saw the instinct for play as a central element in human culture: 'In myth and ritual the great instinctive forces of civilized life have their origin: law and order, commerce and profit, craft and art, poetry, wisdom and science. All are rooted in the primeval soil of play.' In Homo Ludens Huizinga attempts to show the impact of play on almost every aspect of culture, in other words how culture is shaped by play. The importance of this endeavor is that it identifies play as an independent phenomenon. Play for Huizinga has its own organizational forces, its own purposes and its own space

This article seeks to relate alternate reality games (ARGs) with the definition of the game concept by Huizinga, one of the main scholars on the subject. For this, the characteristics of the ARGs are presented and how these games are managed and how they were developed around the hyperconnectivity of the internet. Then, Huizinga's definition of game is presented, emphasizing its characteristics as developed by the historian and contrasting them with the ARGs, demonstrating similarities and contrasts. To break the opposition, Lucia Leão's Labyrinth of Hypermedia emerges as a possibility of analyzing contemporary games such as ARGs, intermediating the characteristics of hypermedia with the concept of Huizinga. The objective of the article is to propose ruptures in the foundations of playful understanding in the tradition of European studies by dialoging the theory of one of its main representatives, Huizinga, with those of Latin American researchers of digital media. Challenges to European Democracy—The New Totalitarian Temptation: Global Governance and the Crisis of Democracy in Europe
The New Totalitarian Temptation: Global Governance and the Crisis of Democracy in Europe, by Todd Huizinga. New York: Encounter Books, 2016. 272 pages. $23.99.
Todd Huizinga writes that there is an emergent trend threatening to reverse some of the hard-won gains of democracy in Europe. He builds his critique on three lines of analysis: social-benefit-oriented governance, demography, and morality. Put differently, those might be money, people, and religion. It may be, Huizinga notes, that there is a “loss of faith and civilizational exhaustion” (p. 202) on both sides of the Atlantic, but it is more pronounced in Europe
