Zenon Przesmycki wśród młodopolskich „wskrzesicieli” Norwida

    No full text
The author argues that a role of Zenon Przesmycki in the process of bringing back Cyprian Norwid to the Polish literary life is slightly overestimated. At the turn of the 19th and the 20th centuries on the Polish lands, the reception of French symbolism took place, which determined the perception of the author of Vade-mecum working in Paris (since 1849) as a great precursor of intellectual “visual poetry”. However, by making Norwid a strictly Romantic poet, the generation of the Young Poland artists effectively distanced themselves from artistic borrowings associated with Baudelaire, Verlaine, etc., thus obtaining the effect of the “nativeness” of modern Polish poetry at that time. </jats:p

Social and Economic Life in Early Ptolemaic Egypt : The Potential of the Zenon Archive

    No full text
The Archive of Zenon, the largest surviving private archive from Ancient Egypt, contains rich information about the lives and affairs of various persons living in Egypt and beyond under Ptolemaios II Philadelphos and Ptolemaios III Euergetes. Since Zenon had a habit of carefully storing papyri that came into his hands, and his career changed several times in the period covered by the surviving sources (263- 229 BC), the documents shed welcome light on different geographical areas and systems that he, and many of his contemporaries, interacted with. To better understand the significance of such systems and social dynamics, the author approaches the c. 1845 texts of the Zenon archive with conceptual and computational methods of Social Network Analysis (SNA) in an ongoing research project. This contribution introduces this project and reflects on the archive’s relevance for such research, with concrete examples of how SNA can assist Egyptologists in studying relational and attribute data revealed by ancient texts and on a large scale. To study the c. 1850 documents that have been associated with this archive collectively, the author employs conceptual and computational methods of Social Network Analysis (SNA). In this paper, she presents her research project and shows how SNA can assist Egyptologists in studying socio-economic realities and behavioural patterns revealed by textual source on a large scale, with concrete examples drawn from the Zenon archive.Peer reviewe

The Nostalgic Tourist: Zenon Fisz in Istanbul

    No full text
The article examines the works of Zenon Fisz (1820–1870), a long‑forgotten prose writer from the period of Romanticism. He lived in Prusy estate near Czerkasy, Ukraine, from where he would send correspondence to Polish press in Warsaw, Saint Petersburg, Kiev, Vilnius, as well as to Russian magazines in Moscow and Kiev. He is the author of the three volumes of outstanding travel writing Listy z podróży [Letters from Travels] (Vilnius 1859), in which he gives an account of his longest journey from Żytomierz to Istanbul, passing Dresden, Paris, London, Nice, Rome and Naples. Assuming the role of a modern journalist, Fisz confronts stereotypical images of the Occident and the Orient with reality. He is both overwhelmed and petrified by the civilizational changes in Europe. Seen from this perspective, Istanbul becomes an Asian city, full of contradictions. But Istanbul is important for the Polish traveler for one more reason: it is here that the greatest Polish poet, Adam Mickiewicz, died in 1855. Fisz notes down the traces of that tragic moment, which unveils his own melancholic nature: one of the man yearning for his estate near Czerkasy.JAROSŁAW ŁAWSKI – eseista, krytyk, prof. dr hab., pracownik Wydziału Filologicznego Uniwersytetu w Białymstoku, badacz wyobraźni poetyckiej, twórca Katedry Badań Filologicznych „Wschód – Zachód” na UwB. Zainteresowania badawcze: literatura polska i powszechna od XVIII do XXI wieku, przemiany wyobraźni, faustyzm i bizantynizm w literaturze, romantyzm, modernizm, poezja Czesława Miłosza, poezja współczesna, związki literatury i geopolityki, polsko‑wschodniosłowiańskie związki kulturowe. An improvement on the valiantbrebner hypercube data broadcasting technique / Nasaruddin Zenon

At the end of the writer's earlier article: A Model Solution for the Radar Surveillance Problem' [7] it is mentioned that a slight modification of the formulation given in the paper can be used to solve the problem of data broadcasting in multi processor computer system. The intended meaning of broadcasting there is the mannereach datum is distributed among the processors in a computer system. However, once the datum is processed by a particular processor it has to be passed to the next processor / s for further processing or to be combined with the whole data array (the broadcast procedure split the data set). This paper is motivated by a multi node broadcast technique for the hypercube architecture developed in 1982 by Valiant and Brebner [6] which the author feels can be further improved in terms of speed and performance. The writer tries to improve this algorithm because it is the only known algorithm for the hypercube machine that has the probability of more than i (log n) processors will simultaneously try to transmit a message through a given processor decreases exponentially with i. (Please refer to [4] for detail.)The arrangement of this paper is as follows. In section 1.0 a description of the hypercube topological characteristics will be given which can be used to modify the algorithm. Section 2.0 provides the description of the Valiant and Brebner (V-B) algorithm. In Section 3.0 we will propose a modification to the V-B algorithm. An analysis of the improved algorithm in comparison to te V-B algorithm is provided at the end of section 3.0
