The author raises the question of whether physicians should disclose the stakes they have as researchers in persuading their patients to participate in clinical trials. In the course of giving informed consent, patients are rarely told that their doctors may have strong financial and professional interests in recruiting them as subjects, that pharmaceutical companies and the National Institutes of Health pay research centers and physicians well for completed patient studies, and that professional advancement and distinction depend on the amount of research done. Spiro believes controlled clinical trials are valuable, but argues that full disclosure of the benefits that physicians expect to achieve from their patients' willingness to serve as subjects will enhance the latters' freedom to decide on participation. VIBRATIONAL ANALYSIS OF SPIRO [2,4] HEPTA-4,6-DIENE

    No full text
Author Institution:Since presenting a preliminary vibrational assignment for most of the fundamental modes of spiro [2,4] hepta-4,6-diena (I) at this symposium in 1977, refinements have been proposed. In 1977 data was available from infrared gas, liquid and solution spectra and Raman liquid [FIGURE] spectra. Similar data is now available for the deuterated species (II). Matrix isolated spectra for both isotopic species have been measured in argon, krypton and nitrogen matrices. A complete vibrational assignment will be presented and compared with assignments for cyclopropane and cyclopentadiene. A normal coordiante analysis is in progress and will be discussed

[[abstract]]QLIMS and Spiro-Q type hybrid molecular materials were prepared for applications in organic light-emitting diodes. QLIMS molecular materials were obtained by combining the iminostilbin based triarylamine (donar) and quinoxaline (acceptor) and spiro-Q molecular material were obtained by combining the dibenzosuberenone based triarylamine (donar) and quinoxaline (acceptor). These molecular material structures are confirmed by NMR and single X-ray diffraction structures. Differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis studies were carried out to measure the thermal stability of these molecular materials. The redox behaviors and HOMO LUMO energy differences are evaluated by the cyclic voltammetry experiments. These compounds were subjected to optoelectronic studies by fabrically bilayer OLEDs with a device configuration of ITO / NPB / compound / TPBI / LiF / Al. Among them, Spiro-m-m-phenyl-N-diphenyl (14b) led to the best device performance and exhibited maximum EL brightness (L) of 19116 cd/m2 and an operaional quantum efficiency (ηext) of 1.15 %.

    The CERN proton-antiproton collider

    No full text
Since summer 1981 the CERN proton-antiproton collider produces collisions at energies at least 10 times higher than the highest energies ever achieved with accelerators. This gives a good change to discover the weak bosons (W and Z/sup o/ boson), which mediate the weak forces, in the next coming years much before the new accelerators designed to study these bosons are built. The author emphasizes the main features in the comparison between the pp collider and existing machines, and between the pp collider and future planned machines
