Simple but effective heuristics for the 2-constraint bin packing problem
No full textThe 2-constraint bin packing problem consists in packing a given number of items, each one characterised by two different but not related dimensions, into the minimum number of bins in such a way to do not exceed the capacity of the bins in either dimension. The development of the heuristics for this problem is challenged by the need of a proper definition of the criterion for evaluating the feasibility of the two capacity constraints on the two different dimensions. In this paper, we propose a computational evaluation of several criteria, and two simple but effective algorithms—a greedy and neighbourhood search algorithms—for solving the 2-constraint bin packing problem. An extensive computational analysis supports our main claim
The stochastic critical node problem over trees
Get PDFWe tackle a stochastic version of the critical node problem (CNP) where the goal is to minimize the pairwise connectivity of a graph by attacking a subset of its nodes. In the stochastic setting considered, the outcome of attacks on nodes is uncertain. In our work, we focus on trees and demonstrate that over trees the stochastic CNP actually generalizes to the stochastic critical element detection problem where the outcome of attacks on edges is also uncertain. We prove the NP-completeness of the decision version of the problem when connection costs are one, while its deterministic counterpart was proved to be polynomial. We then derive a nonlinear model for the considered CNP version over trees and provide a corresponding linearization based on the concept of probability chains. Moreover, given the features of the derived linear model, we devise an exact Benders decomposition (BD) approach where we solve the slave subproblems analytically. A strength of our approach is that it does not rely on any statistical approximation such as the sample average approximation, which is commonly employed in stochastic optimization. We also introduce an approximation algorithm for the problem variant with unit connection costs and unit attack costs, and a specific integer linear model for the case where all the survival probabilities of the nodes in case of an attack are equal. Our methods are capable of solving relevant instances of the problem with hundreds of nodes within 1 hour of computational time. With this work, we aim to foster research on stochastic versions of the CNP, a problem tackled mainly in deterministic contexts so far. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Get PDFThis paper describes the state of advancement achieved in the OptiYard research project in the use of optimisation algorithms in interaction with microsimulation of the rail-yard and surrounding network towards realtime yard management and communication with the network. Two case studies, a hump marshalling yard (mainly Single Wagon Load traffic) and a flat shunting yard (mainly intermodal traffic), were represented with state-of-the art microsimulation models, combined with innovative optimisation algorithms. Some specialistic information on the nature of the models is provided. However, the focus is oriented to railway engineers, with a description of the interactions between the models in producing outputs that are useful both to the yard dispatcher (decisions on staff, track, locomotive assignment, order of operations) and the infrastructure manager of the surrounding network (expected times of departure, availability of tracks in the yard)

No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
