This thesis is to study the political role of the People's Liberation Army from the approach of structure and function. The framework of the thesis consists of three major parts, first, the influence of Chinese traditional political culture on, and the formation of, the political role of the PL A; second, the influence of domestic political struggles and external military conflicts on the development of the political role of the PLA; and the third, the analysis of the transition of the PLA's political role from the structure and personnel arrangements of the CCPCC Within the above-mentioned three scopes, this thesis make a thorough discussion on the following: (1) The relationship between the structure of the PRC and the formation of the PLA's political role; (2) How has ideology influenced the army's political role; (3) What is Mao's viewpoint and his influence on the development of the army's political role; (4) What is the link between the army and the party, and how has this developed; (6) What accounts for the expansion of the PLA's political functions; (7) What is the influence of political factional struggles on the PLA's political role; (8) Is it political institution or military institution that controls the recruitment of the military elite; (9) What are the disparities between the military elite in handling international conflicts and what are their political considerations; (10) What is the Party's position in the army; (11) How have the Party’s important meetings and personnel arrangements influenced the rise and fall of the PLA's political role

The Democratic Development in Hong Kong After 1997

The development of Hong Kong politics is a unique case throughout the world. Hong Kong returned to China in conformity with \ue2The Basic Law of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People\ue2s Republic of China\ue2 under the policy of \ue2One Country, Two Systems\ue2. The original market-oriented Hong Kong economy based on capitalism has turned to an economy based on socialism with Chinese characteristics. \ue3\ue3This study examines developments of democracy after the return of Hong Kong to China from three different aspects. First is to deal with the political system, the design of legal systems in the Basic Law, government structure in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), and the dispute of autonomy between China and Hong Kong. Second is to observe vicissitude correlations between the electoral system and political parties based on the electoral system. Third is to investigate the democratization progress in Hong Kong. \ue3\ue3Findings of this study\uef\ubcThe progress of democratization in Hong Kong relies on the attitude of Beijing. When establishing the \ue2Basic Law\ue2, China has promised Hong Kong \ue2Hong Kong people ruling Hong Kong with a high degree of autonomy\ue2 and \ue2Basic Law\ue2 also regulated that the administrative executives and legislative assembly in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region will finally be elected by the general election. \ue3\ue3However, the result of the law\ue2s interpretation not only violated the public opinion of Hong Kong, but also made Hong Kong people feel suspicious of China\ue2s fulfillment of \ue2one country, two systems\ue2. The result of Hong Kong\ue2s democratization is the finding that it is hard to catalyze the democratization in China within a short period of time

Do the Hong Kong Dollar and New Taiwan Dollar Affect Each Other? An Application of the Threshold Regression Model

    No full text
[[abstract]]A Bayesian econometric approach and threshold variables have been employed in this study to investigate the linear and nonlinear relationship between the Hong Kong Dollar and New Taiwan Dollar over the sample period August 1997-July 2006. Evidence indicates that both commodities bring about no positive effects on each other, thus a more conservative policy may be implemented by the Central Bank policymakers of Hong Kong and Taiwan

[[abstract]]The implementation intention of nursing students in diabetes patient education A master’s thesis By LEE TSAI SHIN ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to investigate the implementation intention of nursing students in diabetes patient education. The six hundred forty students from the Jen-The Junior College of Medicine, Nursing and management were included in the population. There were one hundred eighty-one students in the sample. The main findings of the study were as follows. 1. Most of these students never took any courses related to patient education neither in school nor in hospitals. 2. Many of these students faced medium-high pressure to implement diabetes patient education. The pressure came from the patients and the lack of professional abilities. 3. Most of these students took a positive attitude toward II implementing patient education in their future practice. 4. Only a small portion of the students were confident of the self-efficiency of implementing patient education in their future practice. 5. These students who were assigned to execute the health education for diabetes patients demonstrate the highest intention to implement patient education in their future practice. 6. The attitude, self-efficiency, and intention of the students demonstrate a positive correlation in this study. 7. The attitude and self-efficiency could explain efficiently the intention of these students to implement patient education. The attitude was the main factor. Key words : nursing student, patient education / hygiene health education, self-efficiency, intention

Heuristic algorithms for ordering media objects to reduce presentation lags in auto-assembled multimedia presentations from digital libraries

[[abstract]]Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to examine an auto-assembled multimedia presentation from digital libraries, in which the retrieved media objects are dynamically composed to form a continuously played "TV-like" presentation. This study seeks to propose techniques for ordering the media objects in such a presentation so as to reduce its total presentation lag in a high-delay network environment. Design/methodology/approach - Scheduling techniques adapted from conventional operational research for solving the proposed problem were applied. A number of computationally efficient heuristic algorithms that can obtain near-optimal sequences are proposed. Numerical simulations and real-life experiments for cases with different buffer constraints and bandwidth fluctuations were conducted to evaluate the proposed algorithms. Findings - The result indicates that the proposed algorithms always significantly reduce the presentation lag of a given presentation, compared with a random sequence. Overall, for all the test cases, the average gaps between the idle rates of the heuristic sequences and random sequences range from 15 to 25 per cent. In particular, the RRB_3_2007 algorithm outperforms others in most of the cases involved in the experiment. Originality/value - The study develops a sequence optimization technique for ordering the media objects and a framework for a prefetch-enabled presentation system. The effectiveness and ease of implementation of the heuristic algorithms and the system framework make it feasible for practical digital library and meta-search engine applications.[[note]]SSC
