Band-Toeplitz preconditioners for ill-conditioned Toeplitz systems
Preconditioning for Toeplitz systems has been an active research area over the past few decades. Along this line of research, circulant preconditioners have been recently proposed for the Toeplitz-like system arising from discretizing fractional diffusion equations. A common approach is to combine a circulant preconditioner with the preconditioned conjugate gradient normal residual (PCGRN) method for the coefficient system. In this work, instead of using PCGRN for the normal equation system, we propose a simple yet effective preconditioning approach for solving the original system using the preconditioned minimal residual (PMINRES) method that can achieve convergence guarantees depending only on eigenvalues. Namely, for a large class of ill-conditioned Toeplitz systems, we propose a number of preconditioners that attain the overall O(nlog n) complexity. We first symmetrize the given Toeplitz system by using a permutation matrix and construct a band-Toeplitz plus circulant preconditioner for the modified system. Then, under certain assumptions, we show that the eigenvalues of the preconditioned system are clustered around ± 1 except a number of outliers and hence superlinear convergence rate of PMINRES can be achieved. Particularly, we indicate that our solver can be applied to solve certain fractional diffusion equations. An extension of this work to the block Toeplitz case is also included. Numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method
A PRECONDITIONED MINRES METHOD FOR OPTIMAL CONTROL OF WAVE EQUATIONS AND ITS ASYMPTOTIC SPECTRAL DISTRIBUTION THEORY
In this work, we propose a novel preconditioned Krylov subspace method for solving an optimal control problem of wave equations, after explicitly identifying the asymptotic spectral distribution of the involved sequence of linear coefficient matrices from the optimal control problem. Namely, we first show that the all-at-once system stemming from the wave control problem is associated to a structured coefficient matrix-sequence possessing an eigenvalue distribution. Then, based on such a spectral distribution of which the symbol is explicitly identified, we develop an ideal preconditioner and two parallel-in-time preconditioners for the saddle point system composed of two block Toeplitz matrices. For the ideal preconditioner, we show that the eigenvalues of the preconditioned matrix-sequence all belong to the set L( 3 2 , 1 2 R) ⋓ L( 1 2 , 3 2 R) well separated from zero, leading to mesh-independent convergence when the minimal residual method is employed. The proposed parallel-in-time preconditioners can be implemented efficiently using fast Fourier transforms or discrete sine transforms, and their effectiveness is theoretically shown in the sense that the eigenvalues of the preconditioned matrix-sequences are clustered around pm 1, which leads to rapid convergence. When these parallel-in-time preconditioners are not fastly diagonalizable, we further propose modified versions which can be efficiently inverted. Several numerical examples are reported to verify our derived localization and spectral distribution result and to support the effectiveness of our proposed preconditioners and the related advantages with respect to the relevant literature
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
A block Toeplitz preconditioner for all-at-once systems from linear wave equations
In this work, we propose a novel parallel-in-time preconditioner for an all-at-once system, arising from the numerical solution of linear wave equations. Namely, our main result concerns a block tridiagonal Toeplitz preconditioner that can be diagonalized via fast sine transforms, whose effectiveness is theoretically shown for the nonsymmetric block Toeplitz system resulting from discretizing the concerned wave equation. Our approach is to first transform the original linear system into a symmetric one and subsequently develop the desired preconditioning strategy based on the spectral symbol of the modified matrix. Various Krylov subspace methods are considered. That is, we show that the minimal polynomial of the preconditioned matrix is of low degree, which leads to fast convergence when the generalized minimal residual method is used. To fully utilize the symmetry of the modified matrix, we additionally construct an absolute-value preconditioner which is symmetric positive definite. Then, we show that the eigenvalues of the preconditioned matrix are clustered around & PLUSMN;1, which gives a convergence guarantee when the minimal residual method is employed. Numerical examples are given to support the effectiveness of our preconditioner. Our block Toeplitz preconditioner provides an alternative to the existing block circulant preconditioner proposed by McDonald, Pestana, and Wathen in [SIAM J. Sci. Comput., 40 (2018), pp. A1012-A1033], advancing the symmetrization preconditioning theory that originated from the same work
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
