Novel reliability-based design formulation for evaluating transmission and anchorage lengths in prestressed concrete elements
No full textThis work proposes two new formulations for designing both transmission and anchorage lengths in prestressed reinforced concrete members. Such two length values represent, respectively, the
distance required to transmit completely the prestressing force in the concrete, and the overall distance needed to fully anchor the tendon force in the concrete at the ultimate limit state. The
two formulations proposed here are based on a reliability-based design, starting from the equations discussed within the fib TG2.5 “Bond and Material Models” and from the current
approach present in the fib MC2010. For such scope, two datasets were collected, one for each investigated variable, which comprise more than 1000 experimental evidences from literature.
The collected results were used to carry out a probabilistic calibration of the two formulations, and to evaluate the model uncertainty for both the investigated cases. Lastly, suitable coefficients
are proposed to compute the two lengths, targeting to the required reliability level

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
No full textThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Iron and other metals in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease: Toxic effects and possible detoxification
No full textOf the documented cases of Parkinson's disease (PD), about 10% have a genetic background. The remaining cases of PD have unknown etiology. Thus, environmental factors appear to play a pathogenic role in most of the PD cases. Several of the so far known PD inducing chemicals appear to increase the formation of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS). A suspected environmental factor is the non-proteinogenic amino acid β-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA), which may act to carry iron species into the brain and disrupt correct biosynthesis of proteins. In addition, in epidemiological studies, it has been reported a connection between PD and metal exposures, including iron, mercury, manganese, and lead. Research has shown elevated iron levels in the substantia nigra of PD patients. Mitochondrial dysfunction induced by genetic or environmental factors appears to evoke cascades of biochemical events, which include non-physiological leakage of ROS and arrest of the sensitive production of dopamine. A combination of increased ROS and loosely chelated iron causes neurotransmitter dysfunction. Recent research indicates that treatment with exogenous chelators, such as deferiprone, apomorphine, and hinokitiol, can inhibit PD progression. The endogenous chelator, neuromelanin, also appears to exert protection. In the present review, the pathogenic mechanisms and genetic susceptibilities to metals in PD are explored. No full textAnglická anotace The theological work of Jan Valerian Jirsík Jan Hamberger This thesis deals with the theological work of the Czech 19th century author Jan Valerián Jirsík (1798-1883). Its first part consists of an introduction into the Czech historical context of the 19th century and the life of the author. Its second part presents a survey of the literary-theological work of Jirsík in three life phases: the first phase is demarked by his activity as chaplain and vicar, the second phase by his editorial activity for Casopis pro katolické duchovenstvo (trans. Magazine for catholic clergy) and the last phase by his pontifical years in the diocese of Southern Bohemia. His literary work is divided by theme into various periods, shortly described and characterized. The last and major section of this thesis deals with the most comprehensive and renown work of Jan Valerián Jirsík - Populární dogmatika (trans. Popular doctrine). This pivotal work of theologian Jirsík is discussed at large and analyzed by tractate, both apologetic and dogmatic.
