No full textAs humans we make roughly 10 000 decisions every day. Most of these decisions are not made with our energy intensive prefrontal cortex, with which we make calculated rational decisions, but rather our reactionary impulsive faculties that reacts to environmental stimulus. Investors, like all other humans, therefore falls prey to a host of cognitive biases, leading them to make systematic errors in thinking when it comes to investment decisions. Get PDFGerard Heymans (1857-1930) was the founder of psychology in the Netherlands, and established the first psychological laboratory. After becoming professor, he first looked for general psychological laws, and later became interested in how people differ. Heymans investigated this question by studying biographies and collecting survey data. With this rigorous approach that far exceeded the standards of his time, he arrived at three basic dimensions in which people can vary in their temperament. This became the renowned 'Heymans' Cube'.Through decades of lectures for students and professors of all faculties, the theory became widely popular. No full textIn this paper we report our recomputations of the data of Heymans' ‘heredity-inquiry’, which he carried out at the beginning of this century to test his dimensions of temperament (activity, emotionality, secondary functioning). In our study of 2309 subjects, we globally replicated the three factors. In the activity as well as in the emotionality factor two subclusters could be distinguished. The secondary-functioning factor turned out to resemble the present-day impulsivity-reflection dimension. In the final section the Heymans factors are compared with Eysenck's extraversion, neuroticism and psychoticism dimensions
Architectural metaphors of knowledge: the Mundaneum designs of Maurice Heymans, Paul Otlet, and Le Corbusier
Get PDFThe author discusses the architectural plans of the Mundaneum made in the 1930s by the Belgian modernist architect Maurice Heymans in the footsteps of Le Corbusier and in collaboration with Paul Otlet. The Mundaneum was the utopian concept of a world center for the accumulation, organization, and dissemination of knowledge, invented by the visionary encyclopedist and internationalist Paul Otlet. In Heymans's architecture, a complex architectural metaphor is created for the Mundaneum, conveying its hidden meaning as a center of initiation into synthesized knowledge. In particular, this article deconstructs the metaphorical architectural complex designed by Heymans and focuses on how the architectural spaces as designed by Heymans are structured in analogy to schemes for the organization of knowledge made by Otlet. In three different designs of the Mundaneum, the analogy is studied between, on the one hand, the architectural structure (designed by Heymans) and, on the other hand, the structure of the cosmology, the book Monde, and the vision of knowledge dissemination as invented by Odet. The article argues that the analogies between the organization of architectural space and knowledge, as expressed in the drawings of Heymans and Otlet, are elaborated by means of a mode of visual thinking that is parallel to and rooted in the art of memory and utopian imagination
