Coluber atratus Herrmann, 1804
Coluber atratus Herrmann, 1804: 283. – Type locality. Not given.—Onomatophore: Holotype: deposited in the “Musée zoologique de la ville de Strasbourg” (Strasbourg, France) but now lost (M.-D. Wandhammer, in litt., February 2009).

Status. Not a member of the Xenochrophis piscator -complex, this taxon should be removed from the synonymy of Tropidonotus umbratus and other synonyms of X. piscator.

Comments. Schlegel (1837) and Cantor (1847: 90) regarded this species as a synonym of Tropidonotus umbratus (Daudin, 1803). However, the description of the holotype of Coluber atratus Herrmann, 1804 shows that this taxon is not referable to the genus Xenochrophis. Furthermore, both Schlegel (1837) and Cantor (1847: 90) mentioned another taxon, supposedly described by Herrmann (1804), C. brunneus. We could not find any mention of this taxon in Herrmann’s book, and we cannot comment on its status.
Published as part of Published, First, 2012, 3473, pp. 1-60 in Zootaxa 3473 on page
