No full textEl estudio de las relaciones culturales ente Sevilla e Italia en la Edad Moderna, nos condujo al hallazgo de un contrato en el Archivo Histórico Provincial de la ciudad, en el que se recogía el acuerdo entre Matteo Barresi, un barón siciliano, y dos pintores, poco conocidos hasta este momento, Gonzalo de Flores y Hernando de Alcalá, para la realización de la decoración de cuatro paños para una cama. El resultado nos aporta no sólo una serie de noticias del panorama artístico y social de la Sevilla en el año de la boda de Carlos V, sino también datos desconocidos sobre la biografía del dicho noble.The study of the cultural relations between Seville and Italy during the Modern Age, lead us to the discovering of a contract in the Archivo Histórico Provincial of the city, which show the agreement between Matteo Barresi, a Sicilian baron, and two painters, nearly unknown until this moment, Gonzalo de Flores y Hernando de Alcalá, for the realization of the decoration of four panels of canvas for a bed. The result gives us not only a sort of news about the artistic and social environment of Seville during the Charles V’s wedding time, but also new information about the Italian nobleman biography

Was There a Quiet Revolution? Belarus After the 2006 Presidential Election
No full textThe 2006 presidential election in Belarus mobilized a large cross-section of society to protest against the Lukashenko regime. Although unprecedented, the mass mobilization was short-lived, failing to develop into another kind of coloured revolution in the region. The key to our understanding of the endurance of Lukashenko's regime seems to lie in its internal environment, and notably, in the seemingly contradictory feature of the Belarusian electorate. Not only do they fully identify with the president, thus effectively legitimizing his politics and policies; they also do so knowingly, through their strategic learning of how to survive and even thrive under Lukashenko's regime. This type of learning, however, may not necessarily lead to a critical reflection of the regime's malpractice, and thus is unlikely to challenge its foundations
A Medical Interpretation of Medieval Birth Images
No full textEste artículo se centra en el valor histórico-artístico de las piezas medievales de contenido ginecológico. Aunque la Historia de la Medicina se ha preocupado por recopilar textos y noticias referentes a los cuidados de las gestantes, la Historia del Arte no ha prestado suficiente atención a la información de carácter obstétrico presente en las imágenes, especialmente cuando éstas habían sido realizadas con una finalidad doctrinal. En pos de invertir esta tendencia, analizaremos tres grupos de representaciones cristianas (Nacimientos de la Virgen, de Cristo y de Juan Bautista), buscando en ellas información ginecológica relativa al vendado terapéutico de los recién nacidos, la postura de la parturienta, o la labor de las parteras. En definitiva, nos interesa conocer no sólo la importancia que ejerció el cristianismo en la elaboración conceptual y visual de la iconografía de la gestación, sino también cómo las obras de arte se hicieron eco del pensamiento científico de la época.This paper deals with gynecological information present in medieval images. While the History of Medicine has carefully studied written sources concerning pregnant women, the Art History has not paid enough attention to obstetrical information of medieval images, especially when those ones had been made with doctrinal aims. For that reason, I will analyze three sorts of Christian pictures, Virgin Mary’s, Jesus Christ’s, and John’s the Baptist’s Birth, trying to get from them gynecological data about topics such as newborn children’s wrapping, anatomical position of pregnant women during labour, and midwives’ assistance.
