    Proton-Transfer-Driven Water Exchange Mechanism in the Na<sup>+</sup> Solvation Shell

    Ligand exchange plays an important role for organic and inorganic chemical reactions. We demonstrate the existence of a navel water exchange mechanism, the "proton transfer pathway" (PTP), around Na+(aq) in basic (high pH) solution, using reactive molecular dynamics simulations employing a high-dimensional neural network potential. An aqua ligand in the first solvation (hydration) shell around a sodium ion is only very weakly acidic, but if a hydroxide ion is present in the second solvation shell, thermal fluctuations can cause the aqua ligand to transfer a proton to the neighboring OH-, resulting in a transient direct-contact ion pair, Na+-OH-, which is only weakly bound and easily dissociates. The extent to which water exchange events follow the PTP is pH-dependent: in dilute NaOH(aq) solutions, only very few exchanges occur, whereas in saturated NaOH(aq) solutions up to a third of water self-exchange events are induced by proton transfer. The principles and results outlined here are expected to be relevant for chemical synthesis involving bases, and alkali metal cations

    Proton-Transfer Mechanisms at the Water–ZnO Interface: The Role of Presolvation

    The dissociation of water is an important step in many chemical processes at solid surfaces. In particular, water often spontaneously dissociates near metal oxide surfaces, resulting in a mixture of H2O, H+, and OH- at the interface. Ubiquitous proton transfer (PT) reactions cause these species to dynamically interconvert, but the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. Here, we develop and use a reactive high-dimensional neural-network potential based on density functional theory data to elucidate the structural and dynamical properties of the interfacial species at the liquid-water-metal oxide interface, using the nonpolar ZnO(10 (1) over bar0) surface as a prototypical case. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal that water dissociation and recombination proceed via two types of PT reactions: (i) to and from surface oxide and hydroxide anions ("surface-PT") and (ii) to and from neighboring adsorbed hydroxide ions and water molecules ("adlayer-PT"). We find that the adlayer-PT rate is significantly higher than the surface-PT rate. Water dissociation is, for both types of PT, governed by a predominant presolvation mechanism, i.e., thermal fluctuations that cause the adsorbed water molecules to occasionally accept a hydrogen bond, resulting in a decreased PT barrier and an increased dissociation rate as compared to when no hydrogen bond is present. Consequently, we are able to show that hydrogen bond fluctuations govern PT events at the water-metal-oxide interface in a way similar to that in acidic and basic aqueous bulk solutions

    Sudden Death Associated with Incarcerated Small Bowel due to Mesodiverticular Band

    Meckel’s diverticulum is a congenital anomaly present in about 3% of the population and usually asymptomatic. Rarely, a mesodiverticular band extends from the tip of a Meckel’s diverticulum to the mesentery, thought to be due to lack of involution of the left vitelline artery. The presence of this band creates a closed loop through which loops of bowel can become entrapped. Rare case reports have described incarceration of bowel, and sudden death in children.     Denne avhandlingen studerer de litterære verkene til den samiske forfatteren Matti Aikio, samt det nedslag hans verk hadde i samtidens Norge. Aikios romaner, artikler, skuespill og billedkunst ble skapt i tidsrommet 1904-29, en periode da Norge som ny selvstendig nasjonalstat hadde begrenset toleranse med sin samiske minoritet. En slik etnisk kultur-forståelse var i samsvar med samtidens rådende sosial-darwinisme, på overgangen fra kolonialisme til imperialisme. I slike omgivelser fremsto Matti Aikio som norsk forfatter med bøker skrevet på norsk – men med et selvvalgt samisk-lydende kunstnernavn. Det er avhandlingens mål å avdekke en mulig notsetningen mellom storsamfunnets forventning om assimilasjon og Aikios diskrete presentasjon av samiske verdier i sitt verk og virke. Det blir diskutert om nettopp valg av virkemidler førte til mistenkeliggjøring fra samtidens samiske talsmenn, men at ettertiden har vist at Aikios insistering på samarbeidslinje ville gi bedre langsiktige resultater for samisk språk og kultur. Samtidig søker analysen å underbygge at Aikio selv fikk en økt forståelse for den samiske kulturens mangfold i løpet av sin karriere – samtidig som taktikken endret seg i forfatterens langsiktige strategi om full likestilling for den samiske minoriteten. Fra å hevde at den ekte samiske kulturen bare fantes i Karasjok, endte han med en mer moderne og inkluderende forståelse av en samisk folkegruppe med et mangfold av språk og kulturuttrykk.This dissertation is a study of the literary works by the Sami author Matti Aikio, and of the impact his work had in Norway in his time. Aikio’s novels, articles, dramas and paintings were produced in the time period 1904−1929, a period when Norway as an independent nation state had limited tolerance for its Sami minority. Such an ethnic cultural understanding corresponded with the prevailing sentiment of social Darwinism of the time, in the transition from colonialism to imperialism. In this context Matti Aikio emerged as a Norwegian author with books written in Norwegian – but under a personally chosen, Sami sounding nom de plume. The objective of the dissertation is to disclose a possible contradiction between greater society’s expect­ations regarding assimilation and Aikio’s discreet presentation of Sami values in his literary works and professional activity. It has been discussed whether precisely the choice of tools at hand served to undermine his credibility with the Sami spokesmen of the time, but after the fact it has become evident that Aikio’s insistence on a collaborative line would have far better long-term results for the Sami language and culture. The analysis simultaneously seeks to substantiate that Aikio personally acquired a greater understanding of the diversity of the Sami culture in the course of his career – while simultaneously the tactics of the author’s long-term strategy for full equality for the Sami minority changed. From maintaining that the true Sami culture was found only in Karasjok, he ended up with a more modern and inclusive understanding of a Sami ethnic group with a multitude of languages and cultural expressions

    The Nature of Pentecostal Theology: A Response to Velli-Matti Kärkkäinen and Amos Yong

    The author offers a response to Velli-Matti Kärkkäinen’s essay, ‘Pentecostal Pneumatology of Religions: The Contribution of Pentecostalism to Our Understanding of the Work of God’s Spirit in the World’, which appeared in The Spirit in the World (2009) and often cites the work of Amos Yong. The author, who also draws from their wider writings, argues that while Kärkkäinen and Yong hail from Pentecostal backgrounds, their theological orientation is charismatic rather than Pentecostal; their approach is pneumatological rather than Pentecostal; and their methodology is ecumenical rather than Evangelical. More specifically, the author suggests that Kärkkäinen and Yong’s call for Pentecostals to embrace a more inclusive theology of religions is fraught with perils.</jats:p

    Tämä opinnäytetyö on taidetekotyyppinen työ, jonka keskiössä oli kappaleeni Jousikvartetto Böömiläiseen -tyyliin tallentaminen. Minä sävelsin kappaleen ja organisoin tilaisuuden, jossa esittävänä kokoonpanona toimi Jousikvartetti Ruusunen (partituurin mukaisessa järjestyksessä): Tuiki Latvala, Veera Hölsö, Tiina Perkiö ja Jyri Häkkinen ja äänimiehenä Jari-Jukka Nippala. Kirjallinen osuus pitää sisällään pohdintojani taivaan ja maan väliltä joissa yhdistävänä linkkinä toimii musiikki. Prosessin kuvaus soivasta mielikuvasta, nuotinnusohjelman tiedoston kautta kovalevylle saakka on toinen keskeisistä teemoista. Sävellystyötä kuvaan teknisellä tasolla ja se saattaisi olla ehkä antoisaa luettavaa joillekin kollegoille. Tekstissä korostuu tarinallisuus ja se sisältää paljon henkilöhistoriallista kuvausta. Työni päämääränä oli toteuttaa jotain mielekästä ja itselleni uutta. Jotain, mitä toivottavasti saisin vastaisuudessa tehdä lisääkin. Uuden aloittaminen on aina haasteellista, mutta itselleni on tärkeää, että uusi aluevaltaus on nyt tehty.The objective of this study was to analyse the process of composing and recording a string quartetto for the first time and from a purely rock music oriented background. The purpose was also to create something meaningful and new from the author ́s point of view. Another aim was to learn to use the musical terms of expression as used in classical music. The theoretical section consists of the description of the recording process and the related preparations. Another topic covered in the thesis deals with thoughts about the metaphysical origins of life and music. The opinions presented are very subjective. A great deal of data were collected from a variety of books and online resources they were referred to. The results suggest that there are no complete answers to the questions pondered. In addition, the writing process itself took some time off from the objective of mastering musical terms. Further research is required to find more connotations and connections between the theories of John Hospers and Erich Fromm. In the future, as a result of an intense writing process, considerably more time needs to be devoted to composing new music.Liite Cd:n säilytyspaikka on Musiikkiakatemian kirjasto
