Frank H. Knight [electronic resource] : Prophet of Freedom /
Frank H. Knight was co-founder of the “Chicago School”. He was, first and foremost, a teacher; a theorist and author second. His work is scattered across many economic journals in essay-form standing on the base of Risk, Uncertainty and Profit, published in 1921. Within the economic world today he is chiefly noted for the notion of ‘Knightian Uncertainty’, with which he established his reputation in the pantheon of great economic thinkers. While many who passed through his classes and the Chicago School placed great faith in capitalism, Knight remained a critical supporter of capitalism, offering prophetic insights into behavioural economics and economic society. The 2008 recession burst the bubble of optimism, dating back to the 1980s, in what the economy can do for society. This brought back Keynesian insights into thinking about policy today. In this book, the author argues that Knight also deserves reconsideration, as his prophetic insights can offer a view into the soul of the modern economy.Frank H. Battle of the Blockbusters: Joss Whedon as Public Pedagogue
This article discusses the concept of public pedagogy and the reasons for considering it relevant to the work of the writer/ director/ producer Joss Whedon, creator of numberous TV programmes, such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Firefly, and Films Serenity, Marvel's The Avengers and The Age of Ultron. It analyzes Marvel’s The Avengers (Whedon, 2012) and Christopher Nolan’s (2012b) The Dark Knight Rises as competing public pedagogies. It suggests that popular films can be seen as important educational projects; filmmakers have tremendous resources at their disposal and their creations have a global reach that cannot be matched by individual teachers or national education systems. Whedon can be seen as a radical educator; he enables his audiences to experience ways of looking at the world that challenge aspects of neo-liberal hegemony, and also encourages them to become critical thinkers who have to reflect on their own feelings and perspectives and resist simplistic perspectives on morality and the difficult political choices facing global society

Prey feeding increases water stress in the omnivorous predator Dicyphus hesperus
The effects of water stress (produced by water deprivation and prey feeding) on plant feeding were investigated in the omnivorous predator Dicyphus hesperus Knight (Hemiptera: Miridae). The objective was to determine if prey feeding aggravated water deficits and thus increased plant feeding. We measured plant feeding in a factorial experiment where female D. hesperus were prepared for experiments by providing or withholding water and/or prey for 24 h. We then evaluated the amount of plant feeding on Nicotiana tabacum seedlings by the direct observation of insects at three different densities of the prey, Ephestia kuehniella eggs. The amount of plant feeding, as measured by frequency of plant feeding bouts and time spent plant feeding during observation, was significantly greater for water-deprived individuals than for those that had been provided with water. Individuals that had been provided with prey fed on plants at a significantly higher frequency than prey-deprived individuals at two of the prey densities used in the experiment. These results support the hypothesis that plant feeding in zoophytophagous Hemiptera facilitates prey feeding by providing water that is essential for predation. Bimetallic Ru:Co Mesoporous Nanoparticles Stabilized by PEG and Imidazolium Ionic Liquid Based [KIT-6] as an Efficient Heterogeneous Catalyst for Suzuki–Miyaura Cross-Couplings in H2O:EtOH Solution
\ua9 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature. Bimetallic Ru:Co nanoparticles stabilized by PEG and imidazolium ionic liquid based [KIT-6] mesoporous silica, denoted as Ru:Co NPs@[KIT-6]-PEG&imid 6, has been synthetized by post grafting method and fully characterized by SEM, TEM, XPS, FT-IR and solid-state 13C and 29Si NMR spectroscopy. The supported Ru:Co mesoporous nanoparticles catalyst 6 revealed excellent catalytic activity (conversions up to 100%), turnover number (TON) of 770 and turnover frequency (TOF) of 7700 h−1 in the Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling of p-bromobenzonitrile and phenylboronic acid in H2O:EtOH (1:1) solution under very mild reaction conditions. In addition, the heterogeneous catalyst 6 maintains almost its inherent catalytic activity after the 6th catalytic recycle. Graphical Abstract: [Figure not available: see fulltext.

MATRIX ISOLATION ELECTRON SPIN RESONANCE INVESTIGATION OF H, H, AND THEIR ISOTOPOMERS
Author Institution: Department of Chemistry, Furman University, Greenville, S.C. 29613Hydrogen cluster ions are of interest as reactants in astrophysical processes and as simple models for theoretical calculations. In this work, H and its deuterated isotopomers were isolated in a neon matrix and investigated by electron spin resonance spectroscopy. The various isotopomers were formed by mixing H, D, and HD gases with neon and depositing the mixtures onto a copper rod cooled to 2.6 K. The matrices were then x-irradiated at 60 keV for 30 minutes. Electron spin resonance spectra were recorded for H, HD, HD, HD, and D at temperatures ranging from 2.6 K to 9 K. These isotopomers could only be formed at 2.6 K, and were very sensitive to changes in temperature. Diatomic hydrogen ions (H and HD) were also observed at 2.6 K at low sample gas concentrations. Experimental values for the hyperfine interactions were determined by fitting the observed hyperfine structure lines with those obtained from an exact diagonalization of the spin Hamiltonian
Using n-grams to identify time periods of cultural influence
An author's literary style is influenced by the cultural time period in which the author lives. The author's ideas, and the words chosen to express them, can help identify the cultural time period that most influenced the author. Ideas are expressed in language through sequences of words called n-grams. Over the past several years, Google has been engaged in digitizing millions of books. As part of this endeavor, Google has created a database of n-grams extracted from these digitized books, and has made the database available to researchers online. This is the first time ever that such an extensive repository of cultural data has been made available. This study develops and tests an original method for utilizing Google's database to identify the cultural time period that most influenced the author of a published work. Several undisputed literary works are examined, from which sets of n-grams are extracted and compared against the Google database. The frequency and distribution of n-gram matches allow us to determine the cultural time period that most influenced the author. The method is also tested against several literary works having uncertain or disputed authorship and period of composition. The results suggest that the method developed provides a reasonable approximation of the time period of greatest cultural influence for each book. Unexpectedly, the results tend to support conclusions reached by another researcher with regard to prior literary influences on the Ern Malley Poems. In addition, they lend support to a well-known alternate theory on the authorship of the Book of Mormon.M.S
