The early compositions for cello and piano by Heitor Villa-Lobos
This study presents a historical overview of Heitor Villa-Lobos’s early life, career, surrounding environment, influences, selected early compositions for cello and piano written between 1913 and 1917, autographs, and of Rio de Janeiro from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In the study of Villa-Lobos’s early life and Rio de Janeiro from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it is important to consider the influences of Europe, especially France on Brazil, and European composers on Heitor Villa-Lobos. This study provides historical information, and attempts to increase the dissemination of Villa-Lobos’s early compositions for cello and piano into the standard cello repertoire. The study also presents information to help cellists understand and then incorporate these pieces into their repertoire, followed by a recording of selected Villa-Lobos’s early compositions for cello and piano performed by this author. More pertinent materials are given in the appendixes, such as historical information about the other compositions for cello and piano written between 1913 and 1917 (Appendix A), and a complete list of compositions for and with cello by Heitor Villa-Lobos (Appendix B). The findings of this study show that Villa-Lobos’s early compositions for cello and piano show a complete absence of elements of Brazilian folklore, were highly influenced by the aesthetics of European composers in vogue at the time in Brazil, and were written while the composer was active as a cellist As shown in the Conclusion, after careful analysis, it can be inferred that Villa-Lobos’s early compositions for cello and piano deserve to be known, incorporated into the repertoire of modern cellists, and performed more frequently

Dessa forma, é possível compreender o quanto são evidentes marcas de oralidade, recursos textuais e estilísticos com respaldo nos conhecimentos, na vida e na obra de Cony, bem como são aparentes intertextos partilhados socialmente para objetivar a cumplicidade dos leitores proficientesChronicles are characterized for their language close to the social universe of the reader, for the brevity of the day-by-day facts narrated from the writer’s point of view and the style freedom with which the author expresses himself. This study shows the historical background of literary genders and focuses chronicles on their argumentative aspect to define the author’s points of view and raise reflexions about the regarded day-by-day theme. From the research’s proposition – What’s the efficiency of the intertextuality in Carlos Heitor Cony’s literary chronicles as a strategy to convince and argue with the proficient reader? – the method used to answer this question is based in large compared bibliographic research, studies about texts and Carlos Heitor Cony’s path as a writer and detailed analysis of selected chronicles. The proposal of this study is to connect text resources used in literary chronicles with emphasis in the intertextuality connect to argumentativity. Moreover, this study isn’t restricted to theory because it establishes comparison among theoric propositions and analysis of Carlos Heitor Cony’s selected chronicles. Therefore, it’s possible to understand how obvious are the traces of orality, text resources and stylistics based on Carlos Heitor Cony’s knowledge, life and work. It’s also possible to understand how obvious are the intertexts socially shared to aim the proficient readers’ complicit
A Performance Guide for Heitor Villa-Lobos's Quatro Canções Da Floresta Do Amazonas
abstract: This paper is a performance guide for Quatro Canções da Floresta do Amazonas [Four Songs of The Amazon Forest] by Brazil's most prolific composer, Heitor Villa-Lobos. The primary purpose of the paper is to serve as a source for the correct pronunciation of the Brazilian Portuguese language of the songs. It will begin with an overview of Heitor Villa-Lobos's life and career, showing how his compositions catalyzed the Nationalistic movement in Brazilian classical music. His inclusion of native and folk elements into classical compositions was a significant innovation, which places Villa-Lobos as one of the most important Brazilian classical composers. Furthermore, this paper will explore the issue of Brazilian Portuguese diction in depth, using the Quatro Canções da Floresta do Amazonas to aid non-native Brazilian speakers. This includes an International Phonetic Alphabet transcription of the songs, as well as a recording of the songs being read and sung by the author, a link to which can be found in the appendix.Dissertation/ThesisDoctoral Dissertation Music 201
