Analyzing the expiration of the United States Generalized System of Preferences and its impact on imports from developing countries
Preferential trade agreements (PTA) are widely used to stimulate exports from developing countries through reduced tariffs. One of the largest PTAs, the United States Generalized System of Preferences (GSP), was first introduced in 1974. In 2020, it covered imports of over 3500 product categories at the Harmonized System 8-digit level from 119 developing countries. The most recent expiration was on January 1, 2021 following failure to renew funding. Using this expiration as a natural experiment, we analyze the effect of the tariff increase on imports from eligible countries on a panel of 233 countries and 17 867 products at the 10-digit Harmonized Tariff Schedule level between 2018 and 2022. We use a triple difference estimation method to account for heterogeneous shocks due to the COVID-19 pandemic. From our baseline specification, we find that imports of eligible products from eligible countries fell as a result of expiration. We also find that the effect is stronger in more developed countries due to their greater ability to utilize the program. Additionally, countries eligible for alternative PTAs are also impacted by the expiration, even more so than other countries. Due to the variation in estimated effect, the exact impact of expiration cannot be determined, but given the consistency of the magnitude and direction of the result, we conclude that the expiration of the GSP does reduce imports of eligible products from GSP countries to the United States

Assessing the Impact of Sanctions Against Russia: An Analysis on Shipping Activity in Norwegian Waters
This master’s thesis investigates how the sanctions imposed on Russia as a response to the invasion of Ukraine in 2022 has affected the shipping activity in Norwegian waters. Some of these sanctions affect the shipping industry, such as the implementation of a port ban against Russian vessels and a price cap of 60 price cap on Russian crude oil utilizing linear regression models with and without multi-way fixed effects. The analysis reveals that Russian vessels spend more time in port following the imposition of the port ban compared to vessels sailing under different flags. Additionally, the proportion of tankers with Russian and FOC origin has increased through Skagerrak following the implementation of the oil price cap. It is challenging to determine whether the observed changes in shipping activity are reliable indicators of deceptive behavior. Recent news articles report a rise in deceptive practices, which aligns with findings of the thesis and provides further indications of suspicious changes to the shipping activity in Norwegian waters. As previous literature emphasizes the importance of preventing sanction circumvention, detecting abnormal changes could provide valuable insights that enables policymakers to implement further measures to diminish Russia’s ability to continue financing the war against Ukraine
An empirical analysis of exchange rate sensitivity in Norwegian exports
Totalt sett viser resultatene våre at valutakursensThis thesis examines the impact of exchange rate fluctuations and macroeconomic conditions on Norwegian exports of oil, gas, and seafood from 2015 to 2024. We used multiple linear regression analysis, we conducted two sector specific models to assess how key variables influence export volumes. We found that seafood exports are significantly affected by currency movements: a depreciation of the Norwegian krone tends to increase export volumes. However in contrast to this finding, oil and gas exports show no consistent relationship with the exchange rate, likely due to USD pricing, long-term contracts, and Norway's price-taker status in global markets. Instead, export volumes in the oil and gas sector are primarily driven by foreign demand and domestic production capacity. These results highlight that exchange rate effects on exports are highly sector specific, and therefore they should not operate uniformly across industries. Overall, our results emphasize that exchange rate effects on exports are sector specific
This Bachelor´s thesis examines the socioeconomics consequences of insufficient reaearch on women´s health. Medical research has been based on men, which has led to a lack of knowledge and biases in healthcare services. The thesis is based on the official rapport NOU 2023:5 and an analysis by "Norske Kvinners Sanitetsforening", in addition to data from NAV. Using data and analysis, the thesis highlights differences in sickness absence, work assessment allowance and diability benefits between women and men.
The analysis shows that women receive social security benefits to a greater extent than men, particularly in relation to general, unspesified and unknown diagnoses. This give is indications that the lack of reserch on women´s health may have led to misdiagnosis, worse treatment, and a higher dropout rate from the workforce among women. The findings show that the socioeconomics consequences are significant, including increasead public spending, reduced taxes, human capital and employment. The tesis also argues that increased funding for research on women´s health is not only a matter of gender euality, but also a question of reducing costs and ensuring the long-term sustainabaility of society and the welbare benefits Norway provides

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
