Dialectica Categories and Games with Bidding
This paper presents a construction which transforms categorical models of additive-free propositional linear logic, closely based on de Paiva's dialectica categories and Oliva's functional interpretations of classical linear logic. The construction is defined using dependent type theory, which proves to be a useful tool for reasoning about dialectica categories. Abstractly, we have a closure operator on the class of models: it preserves soundness and completeness and has a monad-like structure. When applied to categories of games we obtain 'games with bidding', which are hybrids of dialectica and game models, and we prove completeness theorems for two specific such models

Probability and nondeterminism in compositional game theory
We substantially extend previous work in the emerging field of compositional game theory.
We generalise work by Escardó and Oliva relating the selection monad to game theory. Escardó and Oliva showed that the tensor operation of selection functions computes a subgame perfect equilibirium of a sequential game. We investigate game theoretic interpretations of selection functions generalised over a monad. In particular we focus on the finite non-empty powerset monad which we use to model nondeterministic games. We prove a negative result: that nondeterministic selection functions do not com- pute the collection of all subgame perfect plays of a sequential game. We then define a solution concept related to the iterated removal of strongly dominated strategies, and then show that the tensor of nondeterministic selection functions computes the plays of strategy profiles satisfying this solution concept.
In the second part of this thesis we greatly expand the expressive power of open games, first introduced by Jules Hedges [Hed16]. In the current literature, open games are defined using the category of sets and func- tions as an ambient category. We define a category of open games that can use any symmetric monoidal category as an ambient category. This is accomplished using coend lenses which can be used to model certain bidirectional processes. Generalising open games to arbitrary symmetric monoidal categories allows us to, in particular, model probablistic games involving Bayesian agents in an open games formalism
Around the world in eighty gays : retranslating Jules Verne from a queer perspective
Studies of multiple causation of literary translation outcomes (e.g. Brownlie 2003,
2006) have found that individual translators may have a significant idiosyncratic input
into the form of the translated text, in tandem with other causal influences, including
the source text itself, translation norms and skopoi. The nature of translatorial selfinscription
and creativity may include an original deconstruction of a source text,
indeed, a radical reinterpretation of same. The translator Butcher has reinterpreted
Around the World in Eighty Days (1873/1995) in the context of its author Jules
Verne’s life history, original manuscripts of the French novel in question, prior to
subsequent expurgation by their publisher Hetzel, and textual clues themselves.
Butcher's Queer Studies readings have had an important influence on his translation
decisions. Examples of his translation solutions throughout this Verne novel are
discussed, and are seen to purposively accentuate perceived sexual and sometimes
specifically gay subtexts. This article also investigates, linguistically, the plausibility
of some of Butcher's controversial reinterpretations of the Verne imaginary
The Influence of Jules Verne in Sweden Around 1900
The article presents the impact of Jules Verne among Swedish readers around 1900 by investigating a juvenile magazine, Kamraten, published between 1892 and 1911. Two newly discovered Martian Epics in Kamraten by the Swedish author of adventure and crime stories, Julius Regis (1889―1925), “En bröllopsresa i blå etern” (1906―07; “A Honeymoon in Space”) and “Dokumentet från Mars” (1910; “The Document from Mars”), give vivid testimony to Verne’s popularity. These stories ― in which Verne is mentioned ― are about Swedes travelling in space and are clearly influenced by Verne’s novels

Nous proposons dans cet article d’analyser l’œuvre de Jules Verne au travers de différents concepts et théories susceptibles d’expliquer pourquoi l’auteur des Voyages extraordinaires n’a jamais été reconnu en son temps par ses pairs. Le concept de « marginal sécant » (Crozier & Friedberg), la théorie des « champs littéraires » (Bourdieu) et la théorie de « la complexité » (Morin) éclairent ainsi autrement le positionnement historique, sociologique et littéraire de cet auteur majeur de la littérature française.We analyze Jules Verne’s work through different concepts and theories, explaining why the author of The Extraordinary Voyages was never recognized in his time by his peers. The "marginal secant" concept (Crozier & Friedberg), the "literary fields" theory (Bourdieu), and the "complexity" theory (Morin) thus enlighten — each differently — the historical, sociological, and literary placement of this major author of French literature
The Compositional Structure of Bayesian Inference
Bayes' rule tells us how to invert a causal process in order to update our beliefs in light of new evidence. If the process is believed to have a complex compositional structure, we may observe that the inversion of the whole can be computed piecewise in terms of the component processes. We study the structure of this compositional rule, noting that it relates to the lens pattern in functional programming. Working in a suitably general axiomatic presentation of a category of Markov kernels, we see how we can think of Bayesian inversion as a particular instance of a state-dependent morphism in a fibred category. We discuss the compositional nature of this, formulated as a functor on the underlying category and explore how this can used for a more type-driven approach to statistical inference
Compositional modelling of network games
The analysis of games played on graph-like structures is of increasing
importance due to the prevalence of social networks, both virtual and physical,
in our daily life. As well as being relevant in computer science, mathematical
analysis and computer simulations of such distributed games are vital
methodologies in economics, politics and epidemiology, amongst other fields.
Our contribution is to give compositional semantics of a family of such games
as a well-behaved mapping, a strict monoidal functor, from a category of open
graphs (syntax) to a category of open games (semantics). As well as introducing
the theoretical framework, we identify some applications of compositionality.Comment: Published in CSL'2
